Should I think of this as a simple "why?" or more like "What are you going to do about it? (to me)" because of the -kureru?

But the point was just about the -kureru, not the (something), which could be anything.

Because if it was a simple "why (something)" they could just say どうして(something) right?

That sentence could be interpreted more ways than that. The "that" in this question could refer to many different things. いつになれ does not necessarily refer to a time but can relate to a process.
I don't know why you are posting "translations" as though they are the only way a sentence with extremely limited context can be understood. Even >>142515824 can end up making sense if the actual context of the statement was referenced. In the same way that
>"I wonder when I'll be able to say [that]?"
can be translated into Japanese in more ways than
>僕はいつになれば言えるのかな

Language is not a static event and context is vital for meaning. It doesn't exist in a vacuum.
>>
>>142515996
how would you know without context
>>
>>142515897
I can imagine context in which that would be correct, but I have to say that's reading way too much into it, when the original poster of the sentence didn't provide any relevant context.

Or you're simply misuderstanding it.

Can someone help me get a decent translation of these lines?

> 君ーまた彼奴の弱みでも知っちゃったの?
> んー むちろ色々教えてあげたのかな…

I'm trying to make it sound good/nice in english, so I'm trying to put the word "learn" in the 1st sentence to fit better with the むちろ in the 2nd.
But I think I'm getting some engrish here:

"You... did you learn some dirty again on him?"
"Hm, actually I might've teached him a lot..."

or scrap the learn/teach and go/get?

"You... did you get another dirty on him?"
"Hm, actually I might've gave him a lot..."

I think both 1st sentences aren't "english"...
Or any other suggestions are welcome!

>>
>>142518012
Okay, I don't know enough jap to sort that out, but I know enough English to help a bit.

You're looking for dirt. Not dirty.
Dirty is an adjective. Dirt is a noun.
Just looking at the sentence in English, it should be more like:
"You... Did you get some more dirt on him?"
For something more colorful or maybe more appropriate:
"Did you dig up more dirt on him?"
From what I can tell, that lines up well enough with the original sentence.

You don't teached. You taught.
I can't really make out that second sentence as easily as the first though. Try posting some context.

Again, my Japanese is shit. I am an English (American) native, but I'm not very good at writing. I mostly just read.

>>142519648
Context is almost non-existent, character just says that out of nowhere after seeing two other characters acting unusually clingy.

"Did you get another dirt of his?"
"No, actually, I might've slipped some of mine..."

I'm thinking in going with this, how does it sound?
>>
>>142518868
Unless you have to take a language, it is a stupid move. Huge waste of time and effort.
>>
>>142518846
You don't, you add more cards if you want to review more, instead of reviewing the same cards more often.

>>
>>142518868
It's pointless. You'd have been much better off just doing RTK.
>>
>>142519916
Is it a novel? If not, a picture would help.
That's still not correct English.
I can't tell you exactly since my school never had much of an English course, but I would say that dirt is a plural and another is used with singular nouns. This doesn't necessarily mean more than one secret in the way you're trying to use it, so it would still be appropriate.
If you're willing to drop the "dirt" part, you could say:
"Are you learning more of his secrets?"
"No. Actually, I might have let slip some of my own..."
Though it's a bit of a mouthful.

Not him (the guy who explained stuff before) but my guess for the literal translation is:

(I am) (when) (can become) (able to say) (I wonder)

The thing that might've confused people before is the なれば refering to the context (僕), so it would be

"I wonder when will I be able to say..."

This almost strikes me as an English sentence order.

Usually, when you see the expression "to become something", "something" is marked as an object/target and comes before なる.

I'm on Chapter 11 of Genki I and I feel like I've got a pretty good understanding of the grammar that has been taught, but I'm not the best at it yet. If I stick with Genki will my grammar be as good as it should be, or should I supplement Genki with Tae Kim?

I'd do DOJG after Genki. TK is a bit redundant after it.

The only way to improve your grammar is to read, since by improving grammar you really mean training your reading comprehension. You won't have amazing reading comprehension after finishing just Genki I, since it's all basic stuff, fabricated and targeted at your level.
Tae Kim probably doesn't cover significantly more than Genki does, since both assume you're starting from zero, but his guide is much shorter and to the point which is why it is recommended often.

Not familiar with that channel (or probably any others that people will mention). If you think it's worth adding to the resources, then go ahead and add it with a short description of what it's about.

I'm not the guide maintainer, by the way. I just figured that section could do with expanding. I'm sure there are some good video resources out there but up until now the guide hasn't contained any (the two in that screenshot were just yesterday).

There was a video series someone mentioned maybe a few weeks ago but I can't remember the name of it. It was available on rutracker and supposedly covered the same sort of material as Genki so that would probably be worth adding if anyone knows what it's called.

My guess (which I hope someone will surely correct if I'm wrong) is:

"That's an odd one with the sole mission of quickly dispatching american cars with dull engines and poor chassis"

The verb 走らせる might have a different meaning in the context, like you said, to "outstrip" such americans cars. To find about it usually you google the verb and look on weeblio and other japanese dics to see how these words are used.

Translations will vary based on how you hover over the characters. It will combine the phrases automatically based on what you think the beginning of the word is.

It will translate individual words and phrases for you and provide a list of possible meanings. But you'll still need to rely heavily on context to know if it's correct. With that in mind, it does a decent job of converting kana to kanji and vice versa.

tl;dr
It helps.

Bitmap fonts are the only sane choice for browsing. In something with large font sizes I'll go for a rounded look for slight ease of use, but it's mind-blowing to me that people would want anti-aliased garbage on 10-14px fonts, it just makes it far harder to read.

Anki is user friendly in that it allows those of any degree of competency use the program in a highly flexible manner: those who read the manual or watch the tutorial videos should be fully able to make simple flashcards of various formats and get a lot out of reviewing the things/facts they are studying and towards the other end of the spectrum, those with an awareness of HTML, CSS, javascript, etc. can create content for themselves in a highly dynamic and personal manner.

Another aspect of this friendliness is that entire decks can be organised via text files and spreadsheets in a way that allows the user to make consistently large decks external to the program with relative ease and import the work to generate their desired outcome. This flexibility can equate to an agnostic approach to content formulation as the final design demands essentially boil down to an even and generic format layout that can be achieved using multiple programs on essentially any operating environment. Anki doesn't care whether your cards are the product of text saved or imported from a range of applications, just so long as it is encoded in UTF-8 and arranged in a tab spaced textual manner.

Anki is a bit like a slut who is willing to spread for anyone with the minimum requirement that you have something that is capable of plunging her clunge, which in practice really means rudimentary cylindrical shaped object. It has absolutely no self respect.

If not even the most compelling content can motivate me to study Japanese, what should I do? There are also no chances that I'll be going to Japan in the next 10-25 years(assuming I survive that long).

The only motivation I have for learning Japanese is that I like it sounds, that I mostly consume Japanese media, and that I don't want to be a monolingual cuck(though I have a native language other than English which is not good enough for me to consider as knowing the language).

Am I hopeless? Currently I know all the Hirigana and Katagana but not many Kanjis and have yet to really seriously dedicate any time and work into grammar.

There is only one motivation worth caring about. Do you want to learn Japanese?

If you do, do your reps. If you don't, don't. You can have all the aspirations in the world, but if you wake up and think "man, this is a waste of time", you'll never learn Japanese. Every day is another step towards fluency. Read whatever you want, watch whatever you want, and you'll make it.

Autists are triggered by people who exist in a manner which conflicts with their routines. There are a handful of autists in these threads that for whatever reason Anki and other people using it clashes with their little bubble of existence so they go out of their way to try and get others to conform to their patterns in order to get on with the day easier. You'd think it wouldn't matter because 4chan isn't real life but the way digital interaction is these days, people don't really seperate themselves from how people receive them online and in a way shape their identity around a consistency of instantaneous judgements from various interaction.

There is nothing more insecure and in need of constant positive re-enforcement than an autist in an environment that clashes with his daily routines and general threads are basically the safest spaces for autists on 4chan.

>「きれい」 written in Kanji looks like 「綺麗」 or 「奇麗」. Since the 「い」 part of 「麗」 is part of a Kanji character, you know that it can't be an i-adjective.
>>
>>142555197
Not an i-adjective unless the い is 送り仮名
>>
>>142555278
Oh I I get it now, that makes sense. Thank you anon.
>>
>>142555197
Makes sense. If you want to conjugate it like an い-Adj you need an い at the end. No い at the end so no い-Adj.
>>
>>142554986
What makes you think so?
>>
Can someone help me with this?

>やわらけえな~

I looked up やわら, but the sentence still makes no sense to me.
>>
>>142555197
For i-adjectives, you conjugate that い part, so it has to be in hiragana.
Like 青い becomes 青く or 青かった (notice how the い is gone), but you cannot write きれく or きれかった because 綺麗 has no い "outside".
>>
>>142555516
A variation of 柔らかいな~.
>>
>>142555516
Dialect on やわらかい I think.

Japanese Proficient 1 and 2
Prior to these units:
>Kanji level: 300 characters
>Vocabulary: 1100 words
Japanese Proficient 1 and 2 used the Toriba textbook. I'm sure that this hasn't changed since 2014. Isn't the Toriba textbook all in Japanese? How in sweet fuck are they expected to handle that with only an expected 1350 odd words from the previous courses? I'm also pretty sure that the Intro course goes for a full year, as well as the Intermediate and Proficient courses. Thousands of dollars in student debt for that.

Like watching a train-wreck in slow motion. What a way to make money.
>>
>>142556600
It doesn't necessarily mean you, it can also mean a "no panties allowed" party.
Also it's not necessarily past tense, you can also say this if the party is in the present or future, but you just remembered that it was supposed to be such a party.
>>
>>142556649
You can do a lot of things with only 1000-2000 words.
Look at Wikipedia's Simple English articles.
>>
>>142556682
>Look at Wikipedia's Simple English articles.
Sure, if you specifically study the words in those articles. Other than that 1000-2000 words in Japanese means looking up shit constantly in the sort of manner that 90% of time spent reading will actually be time spend looking up unknown words.
>>
>>142556756
The point is that you can write a grammar book that uses only the most common 1000-2000 words. Of course it's going to sound like children's speech, but it makes students feel "advanced".
>>
>>142556657
>It doesn't necessarily mean you, it can also mean a "no panties allowed" party.
It's a convoluted way of interpretation....
It's obviously colloquially spoken and sounds like a girl is speaking.

>Also it's not necessarily past tense, you can also say this if the party is in the present or future, but you just remembered that it was supposed to be such a party.
今日のパーティー and だった obviously points out that it's a past event that happened today.
>>
>>142556682
>You can do a lot of things with only 1000-2000 words.
Like what?

>>142556798
Children's speech is a fuck load more varied that what 1000-2000 words allow.
>>
>>142556879
>party in 10 minutes
>you arrive with pants on

Toriba alone as 800 kanji. I don't know why the course would set a minimum of 300.

>>142556948
The Basic Dictionary of Japanese Grammar does this for the most part and still uses hundreds of kanji and thousands of words, but it's naive to think that covering "intermediate" Japanese with 1000-2000 words is remotely useful. Different concepts which are used in different contexts demand different sets of vocabulary. Effective communication of concepts equates to more realistic usages.

I never know how to feel about these things. Are all of these language studying guides with all their quotes and sources and shit just written by retards and/or people squeezing money out of those that can't into self studying or am I actually just overestimating the effectiveness of self study? Surely language experts would have a better idea of how to learn a language than /djt/ right?
>>
>>142557382
You can't actually make any money out of just saying "dude, learn by yourself". Courses are designed to give the illusion of progress and teach stock phrases for tourist use, not anything approaching fluency.
>>
>>142557632
If I was a tourist, I would never attempt to use a stock phrase in a language I'm not good at.
I would be scared as hell that I would not understand the answer and make a fool of myself.
>>

Consider the following.

>みなみ?ここにいるの?パーティーに行ったと思った。
>あ、桜。行ったけど、着いた瞬間ですぐ帰った。
>どうして?
>パンツ着てたから。
>何それ?
>今日のパーティーノ一パソだったの。
>>
>>142557692
What are you trying to say?
You couldn't bring in your note PC to the party today?
In case you mean it's a typo for ノーパン, it's a very weird conversation or context as I said nonetheless.
It's like you say you mean you are an eel when you say 私はうなぎだ。

"we" non-native speakers? Count me out.
Anyway, if someone says 今日のパーティーノ一パ「ん」だったの and s/he means what you mean s/he sounds like a non-native.
I expect something like 今日のパーティ、ノーパンパーティだったの unless something like a ノーパンパーティ is a very well established thing.
>>
>>142557688
Sounds like you aren't an extroverted normalfag. Those people love that sort of shit, which is why phrasebooks used to sell so well in the past before the Internet kind of killed off a lot of the publishing industry to an extent.
They are even more "outgoing" when part of a group travelling. Spending time living somewhere right near the "local" stops for tourists and backpackers looking to get a tiny bit further away from the most obnoxious commercial foreigner traps made me really dislike tourists. From pretty much all over the world from wealthy countries, without fail you'd get a bunch of them stopping you at random in the street trying to break out the phrasebook phrases to impress others.
The best sort of "tourists" are those pretty fucking extreme limited types of people who at least try to learn a chunk about the places they are visiting, including the language, and spend their time there taking in the sites but trying not to stick out and get in your face.

Maybe I'm just extremely introverted by a handful of years back I did some travelling with a small group of family and friends around America and the first thing I did was adopt the local accent and mimic the general behaviour of the local people so when I went out and did some exploring and sight seeing, people didn't really ever take notice. One late afternoon when I was at a bar having a conversation with someone who decided he wanted an ear to chew off about his shitty life, the guy commented on the annoying group of foreigners making a mess of a table towards the back of that section of the place. I dropped the accent, told him they can be pretty obnoxious at times and he sat there looking at me for a while like a deer in headlights and I had to explain to him that I wasn't a local but didn't feel like attracting any unwanted attention.

I think most people view languages like party tricks to be shown to everyone at any moment, even if you are at a party full of professional clowns.
>>
>>142557382
This is what learning the language without anki and compelling content becomes: you stare at some list of words for some time then try to read boring ass examples. Then get to class and try to "talk" in broken Japanese with other retards like you using whatever you managed to remember.
Academia is traditionalist as all fuck, reading stuff with popup dictionary generating thousands of flashcards with one button is crazy sci-fi nonsense to them. People think I'm full of shit when I try to explain my mining setup and that it actually works.
As dumb /djt/ might be, a lot of the regulars here are pretty much Japanese learning vanguard, further than anyone else on the internet.

I was talking about 振舞え or the general ように、というように vibe, not the adverbial form of らしい. Without something like the usage of 命令形 , I was trying to understand how that structure is used to generally allude to something that means if X, behave in the fashion of X [命令形]. The statement 警官なら警官らしく alone really doesn't provide such meaning in and of itself, which was why I asked for further context and then is this extra-linguistic meaning is a form of omission of something that would provide such meaning, such as collocational phrases or manner of speech.

Similar to the より~の方が and vice versa structure wherein the obvious from context part of the statement or understood extra-linguistic reference that より would otherwise be attributed to is omitted.

http://cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/3813/why-does-repeating-one-word-over-and-over-again-sound-weird-to-us-after-some-tim

It's like that, but backward. Before you know the meaning, you just hear the sounds. Once you know the meaning reflexively, it feels like your brain tunes out the sounds and just skips to the meaning. It takes effort to suppress that afterward when you want to regain a feel for what the language sounds like to a nonspeaker.

No. 2ch is reddit because it panders to normies and welcomes forced memes and viral marketing like reddit does. Futaba is 4chan because its culture welcomes outcasts and is actively hostile to marketers and forced memes and normalfaggotry. If you can't see this, you don't understand Japanese society well enough or haven't spent enough time on both sites.
