A lot of people have speculated that, anon. The only real surprise is how soon it's happened. The last couple of episodes threw up so many death flags, though.

I was originally expecting somewhere around episode 18, a la pine salad, for him to bite the dust. That said, I'm glad it happened early because it was getting kind-of boring, to be honest. Every incursion basically started and ended the same. Now that Messer's dead, HayaHaya and MiraMira can develop more as pilots.

- His role on the team (as compared to prior pineapple salad eaters) was split between him and Arad, so one of the two was clearly expendable.
- His rivalry was clearly not going to last; unless you want to keep Hayate vs. Bogue forever (which isn't a great idea since building Hayate as a decent fighter needs a few rungs), Hayate would eventually have to work on up to Keith
- Sort of meta, but Messer's VF-31 has (almost) no merchandise. Everyone else has stuff (even jobber VF-171s) except him. Now, if you know just one thing about Bandai, it's that they, like the good corporation that they are, plan things out months or years in advance (which, as a sidenote, sort of deflates the fun from future Gunpla announcements, as it's pretty easy to predict most stuff a few years out). Not having a prominently displayed toy for Messer is the strongest sign that he had been planned for death early on.

How would they do that? Var is a fairly recent phenomena and only activate when Heinz sings, before that it's just some harmless chemicals. Windermere has also been exporting the water and apples for years so it's impossible to know just how many are affected. Besides even if all of a planets NUN garrison aren't infected, enough will be to ensure confusion while Windermere comes in and mops up.

Kaname has a low opinion of herself after initially failing to be an idol, then later being usurped as front-woman by Mikumo. So she tries to be the best leader she can, attempting to bring Messer into the fold with everyone else. There's no reason for her to pay extra attention to anyone else since they all already get along with each other, so she focused on poor mesa-mesa. Or that's just how I see it.
