I'm more knowledgeable about anime by browsing /a/ and watching anime on the side than if I were to only watch anime, since I can gain information about series I will never watch but still might need for conversation.

Only watching anime without being a part of the community basically limits you to your own experiences.

Only a couple of shows worth watching have aired in the last 2 years, so yeah, I spend more time on /a/ than watching anime.
