Because 'bye bye' is English. Using English in Japanese is slang, which has a different connotation than using the Japanese words for the thing, so subs sometimes translate it differently to give it that sort of informal connotation. I agree it's kinda dumb when 'bye bye' is also slangy in English but it makes more sense for things like >>142385123 when 'sankyuu' is very informal while translating it literally as 'thank you' has the opposite effect than translating it as 'thanks' would.

Okay, let's hear your completely amateur opinion on how a language you know maybe a word or two of should be interpreted into a language you can barely write well yourself. Wasei-eigo isn't one-to-one either.
If you can't do that then you should stop being so mad about it and maybe go actually learn the language so you never have to worry or shitpost about it again.

It may be convenient to get the point across, but it is shit-ass translation. You don't speak in English with Japanese honorifics, so you either have choice to drop them or bastardize the language you are translating into. Using honorifics in anime subs is just a nerdy habit.

I tolerate it, but I wouldn't really try to justify the use. You wouldn't like to have that kind of shit in translations from other languages into English (or any other language) either. It just got stuck with fandom. And since people go apeshit if someone drops the honorifics it will probably stay.

According to American copyright law, Peppers of a Hot Chilli nature that are of a red variant are in fact NOT a food stuff that has existed for a while, but were in fact invented by four dudes who went back in time to make it.

Obviously, if anyone takes a name of some commodity and gets popular, they are retroactively their inventor and get ownership over words - literal fucking sounds anyone can make.

This is is copyright logic.

This is American logic.

English is a language that changes based on what it's being used for. See: Acronyms, loanwords, and many types of jargon and slang, and even literary choices made for different written works. There's no reason whatsoever to assume that the same type of English one would use in everyday conversation is the type that should be used while translating fictional dialogue from another reason.

Elevens are bad at English so they misuse some words + some words change meaning overtime

You can't always translate Japanese katakana words with a word that sounds the same in English. You use word that means the same. For example ナイススタイル is used only for women with good looking bodies, never if an ugly girl has good fashion style or wears stylish clothes.

It's not that one specific character misuses the word, you seem to misunderstand me. It's that the usage and meaning of foreign is somtimes different in Japanese (and every other) language. E.g. ズボン comes from French "jupon" but in Japanese means trousers. Translating the word as what it originally meant would make characters seem retarded. Another example: character says "You bitch!" in English. Would you tranlsate it as "You female canine animal" only because that's what it originally meant before the usage of the world changed?

Slang is not restricted to specific people though, it's something adopted by groups, IE dialects. American English, which subbers are obsessed with achieving through their localization, is in large part composed of slang itself.

Why are you bringing french into a discussion of English loanwords? Also why are you even talking about translating things to their original meanings? That's the exact opposite of what I'm saying, you adopt the new, Japanese meaning into your translation and allow the viewer to understand the new meaning contextually. If absolutely necessary, TL notes are also an option. (Inb4 strawman using cherrypicked TL note meme images.)

To explain how loanwords can change meaning over time.

Because that's what you were proposing to do by using the original meaning of the world in English instead of the meaning it has nowadays in Japanese.

>That's the exact opposite of what I'm saying, you adopt the new, Japanese meaning into your translation and allow the viewer to understand the new meaning contextually.

Nobody knows the meaning of the word when used in Japanese. It's no different than leaving any other Japanese word untranslated. Or rather, it's even worse than that because the word is a false friend and many people would assume it means the same as "style" in English, which is not the case.

Wrong, a word's meaning is assigned. If they were static then meanings wouldn't change in the first place.

Contextual meaning still exists.

>Or rather, it's even worse than that because the word is a false friend and many people would assume it means the same as "style" in English, which is not the case.
The Japanese usage of "style" isn't even incorrect to the English definition, they just use it to describe different things. By replacing the word with something else you're directly stripping cultural distinction from the work for the sake of making it more accessible to retards and children.

No, it wouldn't be a correct use. Words have shades of meaning and are appropriate in different contexts that dictionaries simply cannot exhaustively cover. The fact they weren't covered means that they're decidedly not important compared to the meanings that are. Also thesauri go much more in-depth than dictionaries or the average faggot who happens to speak the language does.

>A woman told she's stylish would be flattered about her dress and makeup sense. A woman told she's well-configured would either be confused or assume English is your second language and you looked up a translation without having experience with how the word is used.
What you're describing is nothing more than a cultural difference, not a definitive one. The same word can be flattering to one person and insulting to the other, with it being used correctly in both instances.

But feel free to point out where in the dictionary "Stylish" is defined to specifically mean "attractive choices in dress and makeup and not any other possible aspect of physical appearance".

>What you're describing is nothing more than a cultural difference, not a definitive one.

It's almost like words need context for a definition to be applied. When you say "she has a good figure" it doesn't mean "she has a good configuration" because that's simply not how context works.
You are using thesaurus to translate in a void.
>>
>>142431177
No. Just no. They're not covered in the dictionary because the dictionary is not infinitely long and cannot cover all possible shades and all possible contexts, nor is it supposed to.

All words and meanings are defined culturally. Any collection of sounds can have any possible meaning. The translation is supposed to take a set of sounds from one culture and produce a set of sounds that provide the same meaning to another. Your translation achieves this only for your hypothetical "but it COULD technically exist!" culture where a woman hearing "style" assumes "body" thanks to a tenuous link between context-free dictionary definitions, rather than for any English-speaking culture that actually exists.

The original point of the discussion is "The japanese use X word incorrectly so it shouldn't carried over into the translation". According to English dictionary definition, the usage of the word is not incorrect, therefore the central premise originally made in >>142424169 is debunked.
>>
>>142421920
then again its hard to understand elevens when they talk anything but japanese so sometimes i'm pretty happy about those english subs translating something thats totally not english even tho it should be.

Both definitions synonymize "form" with "figure" so it serves my point just as well.

I linked directly to the thesaurus page under the assumption you'd at least attempt to gain a proper understanding of it before wasting more of our time on this conversation.

So, what exactly is your point?
>>
>>142433170
It sounds cool to them, just like English speakers try to sound cool/intellectual by using Latin or French for example.
>>
>>142432757
>>142433197
Oh, and for clarification both definitions come from the same Merriam-Webster thesaurus page I linked in the thread.

Seriously, check the fucking citation you asshole.

The translation of wasei-eigo can only be provided by a Japanese dictionary, not by an English dictionary. Japanese dictionaries state that スタイル means figure for human body shape.
>>
>>142433197
Except that you kept defending the use of "configuration" to describe human bodies when the definition that has configuration as synonim only refers to objects. See what's wrong with your argument here?
>>
>>142428917
Why didn't you include the usage examples?

><classical style of dance>
><Dinner was served buffet style.>

It's almost as if "good" isn't a concept that makes sense with this usage, because it's about type rather than quality.
>>
>>142433015
>It's your source that means nothing.

You know you're just saying you don't know what wasei eigo is, right? This destroys everything you were trying to argue about.
>>
>>142433748
>Japanese dictionaries state that スタイル means figure for human body shape.
And English dictionaries/thesauri state that "figure for human body shape" is an applicable meaning for "style", therefore making a translation of スタイル to style accurate.

>>142433861
The configuration conversation was about the wrong definition, and so was rendered redundant when the correct definition was brought out. It wasn't part of my point anyway, only Figure and Form being synonymous was.

>>142434042
I didn't include the examples because they were besides the point.
>It's almost as if "good" isn't a concept that makes sense with this usage
Then why is it used in the main example given by the dictionary?

>>142434078
Not an argument.

That is correct.

They weren't writing in German.

I thought "Handy" means "handjob".
>>
>>142435497
>And English dictionaries/thesauri state that "figure for human body shape" is an applicable meaning for "style"

But they don't. Your Merriam-Webster definition for Style defines it as a "Form" for something and that's only applied to objects not human beings. And again, it uses examples with objects only.
You keep going in circles with a completely flawed argument, trying to win a discussion that you lost hours ago.
>>
>>142435497
>Not an argument.
Of course it's not an argument when you just fucked up and proved you have no idea what you're talking about. It was entertaining reading your autism though.
>>
>>142435497
>I didn't include the examples because they were besides the point.
They're not. Your definition is about being a PARTICULAR style, such as classical, not having good or bad style.

>Then why is it used in the main example given by the dictionary?
I don't see the word "good" anywhere on the page, but if it is, it's for a different usage.

>And English dictionaries/thesauri state that "figure for human body shape" is an applicable meaning for "style"
It says it means "a particular form or design of something", and clarifies this with examples of "classical style" and "buffet style".

Incidentally, here's the most comparable OED definition:

>A kind, sort, or type, as determined by manner of composition or construction, or by outward appearance.

You could push it and say that "curvaceous" is a style of body, but you can't use this definition to arrive at it from "good style".
>>
>>142435834
>Your Merriam-Webster definition for Style defines it as a "Form" for something and that's only applied to objects not human beings
>the type of body that a person has <Martha has such a slender figure that just about anything looks good on her>
>Synonyms build, constitution, physique, form, frame, habit, shape
>form
>http://www.merriam-webster.com/thesaurus/figure
Do you plan to address this definition or not?
>>
>>142436360
It's still not the definition of "Form" that's used in the definition of "Style".
You can stop now.

Sorry, I mistook which dictionary entry you were referring to in regards to samples. When talking about "good" I was referring to the usage in the japanese entry.

I'm not sure I'm getting your point though, just that the English definition of "style" is used on a much more general basis than its application in Japanese.

>You could push it and say that "curvaceous" is a style of body, but you can't use this definition to arrive at it from "good style".
"Good style" is still correct English, and could in fact refer to a curvaceous figure, people just won't be sure what specifically you mean because a lack of general consensus. "Style" in japanese is still used with descriptors, it is not inherently a descriptor like Curvaceous is.

>"Good style" is still correct English, and could in fact refer to a curvaceous figure

Not with that usage. It refers to an object belonging to a particular class of things, such as classical, not to a quality or level of stylishness. "Good" only makes sense in relation to more concrete definitions like "Used absol. for: Fashionable air, appearance, deportment, etc. Also, more generally, attractive or impressive quality; originality.".

>people just won't be sure what specifically you mean because a lack of general consensus
People will be sure what specifically you mean, they'll just be wrong because you're deliberately miscommunicating to make a point.
