A child soldier is more or less guaranteed to have a fucked up mentality and make fucked up decisions and do fucked up things. Makes for easy drama. If Mumei were a decade older she'd act more like the engineer. While that'd be awesome, it doesn't contribute to an action series as well.

Ikoma spends his entire life designing a gun powerful enough to kill Kabana. Now they're everywhere. Ikoma realizes that the Kabana virus has limits and saves his life by becoming a Kabaneri. Now they're everywhere. Ikoma literally takes Kabana hearts and forges a sword out of them. Now the big bad has one too.

It's like the moment he has a stroke of genius someone else shows up who's already done it before. I get the vibe this is setting up for a class warfare end arc with Mumei's oniisama.
