I never minded high school anime, but I felt Hyouka didn't really have anything going on aside from when Oreki solved the mysteries.
I know now that Kyoani puts a lot of subtlety into their shows so I was never bored on my rewatch. There was a lot of stuff I missed.

You can defend this anime all you want with the great character development it has,but that doesn't take away that the vast majority of the content is boring as fuck. Looks really pretty though.

She's inquisitive, innocent, but elegant. She's grounded in a history, which is her family.

Oreki lives in an empty home with absent parents. He's extremely clever and intelligent, but completely disaffected by modernity. He has no passion, no identity. He feels no connection to anything. He just goes to school and goes back home. He's obligated into participating, he doesn't want to do anything.

Oreki is disaffected, disconnected, but has great potential. Her represents modern nip youth. Everything is gray around him.

If I remember correctly, Chitanda even says in the final scene hat she hopes he can accept her. There's some more detail in the way they "connect" in the final scene that support this theory.

It's a bit far fetched, honestly. But I like it. The only piece of evidence I can't dismiss is that several times in the show, Oreki is seen reading the latest news which is always about corruption in government.

Been thinking about picking it up again. However I do feel kind of unwilling to rewatch the whole festival again, do you think I could just start from the next arc?
The mysteries aren't very engaging but the characters are great, in my opinion.

I think being manipulated ('used') was definitely a part of it, but I think what made him the most mad was the fact that he allowed himself to get such a big head that he literally created his own solution to the mystery movie, completely stepping all over the author's vision for the script.

You can see him get more and more frustrated as all three of his friends explain to him how he missed out on three important clues (What was the rope for? - Mayaka // The author didn't like character deaths - Chitanda // The author hadn't read any of the novels the twist was based off of - Satoshi).

I'm certain at the end of it all he was more angry with himself then Irisu, which is why he didn't seem to hold her to any real contempt. You also see him come to terms with it at the end when he reflects on it with Chitanda, reinforcing that she's really his muse/guardian angel.

It's a damn good arc. Arcs which knock a protagonist on fire down a few notches usually are.

And as an aside, I don't think it's fair to call her a 'Mary Sue' as critics of the series like to do. She's not just good at everything for the sole purpose of being good at things. She's meant to put Oreki's level in perspective. Whereas the rest of the classics club is baffled by Oreki's natural talent, he's nowhere near Tomoe's apparent omnipotence(?). It's a kind of parallel to Satoshi's problem with being mediocre at everything, albeit by choice. Even if Houtarou were trying, he probably would never catch up to her. He's basically the Satoshi of their relationship, even if he doesn't think about it.
