a.) quality control on some manufacturers is very high because many people collecting figs will absolutely return one if a speck of paint is in the wrong place or the mold for the sculpt had a flaw. Word gets out that a company has terrible QC, and people will be wary of buying from them even if it looked good in pictures. If the product looks flawless people will pay more for it.
b.) licensing
c.) many people don't buy figs at release if they're not 100% enamored with the sculpt/character, and wait for them to be offloaded in sales/bargain binned/auctioned off. So basically if it's you're waifu and it's a fantastic fig, you'll care much more to make sure you get yours in pristine condition ASAP than some other guy who thinks "meh, maybe if I see it half off". This is why they keep fucking making Sabers, because many nips have her as a waifu and have proven to apparently be unlimited money pits for good Sabah figs. Even though they have like 20 already.
