I don't think it's particularly bad but it does seem like it's trying too hard to be heavy. I wouldn't necessarily call it edgy, but it definitely seems like a story that's meant to be dark just to be dark. These times of narratives usually work best if you have a mixture of the bad and the guy and sprinkle a little hope, because people will just get tired of non-stop suffering. The tone is also way out of what Kyoani has done in the past several years so I really wonder how they'll adapt this, particularly the war scenes.
If Kyoani one thing right, though, it's have good scene composition. This has the potential to have some stellar episodes but i can easily see it becoming something that's unpleasant to watch weekly.

You all are way more fucking pretentious than a show can even be just because you're already giving your "in depth criticism" about a novel/show you barely know anything about, and that only two people have even read and talked about. No major changes. Kumiko and Reina as gay as fuck in the novels, and while Shuichi eventually wins, he's not a big deal in the first volumes. Like I said, these are all parts of an adaption. They have to remove scenes to fit the time slot, they have to add some dialogue to show things that aren't spoken in the novel or to develop some characters, etc. Any adaption has this kind of things.
Changing the story would be something like what they did to Chuuni or KnK. Chuuni's novel is about Rikka and Yuuta studying math, and it's a love triangle with Shinka. The anime changes that to being mostly about Rikka and Deko's (original character) chuuni antics and about Rikka's daddy issues, and Shinka isn't a romantic interest. In the KnK novel, Akihito doesn't have a berserk mode, and that alone changes like half the fucking story.

All the things you listed are just things that have to happen in adaptions, not changes to the story.

The story wasn't a trainwreck, honestly. It's just that it was written around Aki and Mirai's romance. I'm serious, if you think about it, everything that happens in the show is to develop their romance. Mirai's revival at the end also wasn't an asspull, if you need explanation for that, I have a pasta I can post so you can see.
But yeah, the story isn't bad, it's just misunderstood. It's not an action show, it's not a shounen, it's a romance, primarily. It's the story of two overpowered kids that have been living hating themselves and living under custody. Then, Mirai is sent to kill Akihito because they thought she could pair his power, but she just ends up relating to him and his "curse", and caring for him enough to sacrifice herself to free him of it. When Akihito realizes what she did for him, he realizes that he didn't want to be normal, he just wanted someone that could understand him, so he went to get his girl back.

It's not so complicated, but the anime makes it a little hard to read because it relies a lot on details, subtle expressions, and foreshadowing, Also because they didn't explain Mirai's intentions until episode 10. I can't stress this enough: KnK is a romance, and everything about its story is written to develop the romance.

KyoAni's "flow" is meh compared to Trigger animators' work. They don't have style and dynamism like Imaishi or Yoshinari do. Just animating something with lots of heavy detail and filtering isn't enough to make character movements look good.

Actually I had a talk with a friend about that.

At first I was like "all samefaces, all the characters through their recent show look alike" but there are slight differences, though not minor. In the end it's not especially the design that make them look the same, but the level of refinement of the line, color, shade, and all those things. In that way it's a bit like ufotable's VFX spam but in a more skillful manner, still, the con is that it homogenize all of their shows and it all looks the same.

Okay their design is different like some are trying to prove with picture of faces side by side with their designers, but STILL it could look a bit more different like let's say, a manga author from another? (Nodame Cantabile vs Honey & Clover vs Arakawa under the bridge, nothing confusable here).

I wish Kyoani would have more "author" designs. I don't know. Like any other studios that adapts various mangas from various authors.

The movie didn't need to explain how Mirai came back to life because there were already enough hints in the anime to know. The only mysteries are Akkey's mom and Mirai's ring. Although Mirai's ring did kind of have an explanation, about it being made out of her mom (I think), and that's probably related to how she had flashbacks of the bad things they did to her ancestors (who she shares the same cursed blood with, and it was shown that Mirai's soul is in her blood) so maybe that's how the ring can contain Mirai's soul if she dies, the same way a youmu stone will contain its essence, and which can be brought back to life if there's a fitting vessel (shown by Akkey absorbing the KnK's stone in his hand). And that vessel was spawned from the KnK's power and Akkey's strong emotions. They said Youmu are made from strong emotions, and the KnK has the power to create youmu as well, and if it can't spawn them from scratch, we saw it spawned Ayaka, which it absorbed, and Mirai "died" because it absorbed her, so one way or another, the KnK can spawn a vessel for Mirai. We also saw that Mirai created a puppet Aki inside of the KnK from her strong emotions, and that puppet floated to the border of the KnK and merged with the real Aki when he entered, which is more proof that these puppets can be merged with its proper soul.

The show didn't have infodumps about those things, but it was explained by showing it.

Still, like you said in some studios there is an artistic idiosyncracy, and more commonly an internal policy that unite most of their work with a common denominator (well, not always in terms of animation here though). Like, Bones does great and flashy action, Madhouse likes adult and psychological themes, etc.
