Since in order for a magical girl to die, their soul gems would have to be destroyed, so their souls got obliterated in the process. Which brings me to the next point, is there an afterlife in Homura's world? Is the Law of the Cycles still in effect? Or we just lack so much information on that new world that we can't be for sure whether there is or there isn't an afterlife.

Based on what happened in Rebellion I have a few guesses about the next movie.

First, Homura definitely gets more and more evil, and is super powerful, the most powerful being in the whole universe. Can she be stopped?!?

In spite of having been obviously straight in the first movie, Sayaka completes her transition from bi-curious to full on lesbian and she's now in lesbians with Kyouko.

Mami and Nagisa, who gets lots more screen time, also explore their feelings of lesbian with one another.

Witches are Stands now so all the magical girls fight punch-ghost style. There are many such duels between the different titular megukas for reasons that are highly convenient.

Visuals are full-blown SHAFT at this point, and the whole movie looks like a one and a half hour long SZS opening.

Anyways I'll just make a few more observations about the show based on my first impression.

I don't understand why Kyouko came to Mitakihara in the timelines where Mami didn't die, because that seemed to be her whole reason for coming in the first place.

I didn't find it entirely convincing that Homura would give up so quickly on trying to explain the fate of magical girls to Madoka & Co, since she could easily have convinced them she was from the future, and Madoka even said in a later timeline that "you can go back in time, right Homura?"

I don't know why Homura acts surprised when some things happen, like when Gretchen shows up in the first episode, since she's already been through this timeline so many times before. Maybe Gretchen didn't show up in the previous timelines? Maybe Kyubey drew her there somehow to take the heat off himself?

I also really loved the soundtrack and the character designs, which isn't surprising given it was Yuki Kaijura and Ume-sensei. And I'm surprised Urobuchi could write adolescent girls who KIND OF spoke and acted their age. When I saw him billed I was expecting every character to talk like a 30 year old Philosophy student.

Also Sayaka is clearly the best girl, I hope there's no argument about that. I'm saving every cute picture of her in this thread and will continue to do so.

I'd agree. Eternal is worth watching. Beginnings is meh. Personally I feel the "movieverse" sets the tone better for Rebellion than the series. The series had a more horror vibe. The movies come off more as a dark fantasy-thriller.

The timelines aren't always consistent; there are variations between them. Presumably Kyoko comes to Mitakihara when Mami is alive because of their previous friendship, to try to reconcile.

There are two main reasons Homura stops trying to tell the truth. One is that since she's a strange newcomer, they don't trust her over Kyubey. This is exemplified when they all blow her off when she tries to explain. And in all honesty, it's entirely reasonable to assume that she's lying and is just trying to manipulate them for her own ends. Secondly, Mami and Sayaka can't handle the truth. They both succumb to despair and the results are disastrous.

As an aside, Gertrud is the witch in the first episode. Kriemhild Gretchen is Madoka's witch.
