I love despair, but in the end despair's just a tool you can use in stories. There's no real meaning to it by itself. Seeing characters overcoming the despair and earning the ending they deserve ("deserve" being subjective) is what really does it for me.

He'll be stuck in the greater time loop forever. Unable to even die, he'll continue wandering, trying to find a way out, only to discover that he's stuck there as Satella's plaything, forced to dance to her tune or suffer a pain worse than death. Forever. Endlessly. His purpose, memories, beliefs all gradually become indistinct in his despair over the years, and eventually, he gives up trying and stops thinking, stops trying, and becomes the villain. He starts destroying himself, the world, and eventually his former alter-dimensional friends in anger of the futility of the world with all the powers he's absorbed from the bishops (Satella would have already repaired his mana gate/or would supply the mana), and at that moment, he'd finally stop looping, and Satella would live with her mindbroken husbando for the rest of eternity. He won't ever be able to go back, even after realizing that he's become a monster - he's destroyed everything he ever believed in and loved, and so, he gives in. He stops thinking about the reality of his situation, and fills his heart with Satella. Satella and Subaru live out the rest of eternity as tyrants in love.

Remember kids, this LN is about maximizing suffering for Subaru. Not about happy endings. The best-case scenario is that Satella helps Subaru put Rem's twisted soul back into her body, becoming Subaru's personal battlemaid.

The idea is that Subaru has an inferiority complex toward his dad. Having him be integrated into the plot not only adds rationale for him of all people to be abducted randomly, but also adds internal conflict for him if he shows up as someone both as broken and as renowned as Reinhardt.

Subaru died hundreds of times to get that far, yet his dad would still be Mr. Gary Stu, just like at home. Nothing would have changed. It'd force him to question everything about himself, and, I'm sure his dad will offer him a way to transfer the curse to himself and go back to their world, alone. This theory explains almost everything that's presently unexplained. Even stuff like Satella prohibiting telling other people about his timeloops (to prevent him from receiving proper moral support or trust), or her creating a new 'save point' after Rem died, or really anything.

The reason why Satella loves Subaru so much is probably because she loves Subaru's dad, and that love extends to his son (and is possibly her own son as well). Perhaps part of it is about getting the family together in some twisted sense by building Subaru's strength and mentality up to a similar position as the rest of the family, and to break mom out of magic prison. Given how fucked up all the witches/bishops are, it wouldn't be strange for their love to be twisted as well.

Also, the reason Subaru was raised in his original world normally until he was old enough was ostensibly because she's guarded by a barrier that repels anything that exists in that world, and Subaru's dad originally lived there. Subaru is probably the only one who can legitimately break Satella out.

In the first loop, he comes to her and she actually knows he is going to die but does nothing and is minimally involved with him.
In the second loop, he comes to her and she lets him come to his senses in her library.
In the third loop, he comes to her and she provides him with information that could help him.
In the fourth loop, she comes to him and offers her unconditional protection.

My thoughts are that Subaru's memories and reliance on her grow stronger each loop, to the point where she can sense that he has a strong relationship with her, even if she does not remember it. She actually asks him in the second and third loops about his familiarity with her.

By the fourth loop the thoughts she reads from him are strong enough that she feels compelled to protect him.

So her exact knowledge of him does not carry over or change from loop to loop, but her understanding of their relationship does carry over. So her knowledge remains the same but their bond is constantly increasing (which is probably intended since the witch moved the save point to after their first meeting so that he would come to rely on Betty.)

Anyhow, I've been trying to think about what I like about this series so far, but there are just too many spoilers stuck in my head. I'll probably have to straighten it all out to think about it properly. Right now the pattern seems to be to introduce an all-too-familiar cast and scenario, with only a few hints that something is off, before twisting it around at the end and showing the first impression was more than a bit off.

I think the first thing I noticed that seemed off was actually just that Subaru was given "scary eyes" that didn't fit his apparent attitude, but that's not too strange on its own. However, the spoilers make it sound like it's actually relevant.

Almost all Japanese kanji are the same or only slightly altered versions of the original Chinese characters, so yeah you'll probably see a lot of Chinese characters that you know. Meanings are often similar, but there's often more than one meaning, some have slight to major differences from the meaning of the original Chinese character.

In short you might recognize characters you'd know and have some idea of what the words mean, but it won't get you too far. I'd compare it to being an English speaker looking at Spanish or French and being able to tell what a word might mean because it has the same origin as an English one.
