While you people circlejerk it and shitpost about seasonal sales that are small time I can't help but notice that Girls und Panzer is already back up to #2 overall second only to Star Wars again. That rank is good for roughly 1,600 pts a day if I'm not mistaken, enough to eclipse any other show from this seasons stalker gain for their respective first volume's to date in about 30 hrs. That's how fucking little this seasonal shit you chirp each other about matters in the long run. Hell the Love Live PV collection which is literally just 5 minute shorts of school idols dancing provactively and being cutesy is almost at 20K pts in a little over three weeks, like 5K more Macross Delta, Kabaneri and Jojos first volumes have accrued in about a month combined. Bandai and Lantis are absolutely on fire Amazon stalker wise lately, but it seems to come at the expense of virtually everything else that just can't seem to get it done no matter what.

We won't know for sure just where the group is at until next week when their first singles sales come out but it's dominating the Amazon preorders for anime right now. 3rd overall only to a T.M Revolution Greatest Hits album and a mainstream Japanese folk singer. If there's one thing that tends to hold true lately it's that otaku can barely resist idols. They still have about 2 months to play the event ticket card and the first live is in August I believe so we'll see but the connection seems like an obvious one to make.

Kabaneri is unabashedly a throw every possible pandering angle at the screen with mass marketed Sawano vocal album music played over it and it's still kind of up in the air whether it's going to hit 10K first week. In years past you could have booked it easily. See this is what's fucked about this fandom, having Sawano crap out some 15 track vocal collaboration OST that barely fits the show doesn't always equal "good music" like the dumb idea people have in tier heads. He's trendy as absolute fuck but also a complete sellout hack that pushes the vocal songs with hilariously bad lyrics that barely fit he arrangement because vocal music sells more than straight unintrusive accompanying BGM. Most of his soundtracks if anything just kill the mood of otherwise we'll put together scenes. Movies that follow a series as a continuation tend to give series a boost in back sales. Its pretty common, but GuP is like in its own league right now. What really is surprising is the fact the OVA is charting higher over 1 year since release. And the OVA is actually a missing TV ep so it's strange that people would just buy it on its own more than the rest of the series. I mean it's not really a stand alone ep.

To take a break from all the shitposting for one moment looking at recent sales numbers and what's currently in the pipeline I'm not seeing how the late night anime industry survives the next generational transition of the fanbase that'll be coming up within the next 5 or so years period let alone with it's current business model geared toward selling overpriced BDs and merch to niche otaku demos unless it can find some way to generate real new hits with new demographics and new franchises. The reason for this is that for most of this decade it's just been getting by on old standby's and the same kinds of content and character brands over and over yet precious few series aside, most of which seem to belong to Bandai Namco, it just doesn't seem to be growing the fanbase beyond the niche it first established in the mid 2000's at all. Hell even they're kind of having their struggles getting the current generation of youth into mainstays like Gundam. There just seems to be this presumption among the big shot producers that the current generation of fans are lifers and there's no logical reason to presume that's the case. Also further saturating the market with garbage titles as demand clearly continues to drop isn't helping matters either so fuck me if I know what the industry is even thinking or planning currently besides it's own decline. Like I almost get the sense that the late night anime industry has been so geared towards targeting the same niche people over and over again it's literally forgotten how to appeal to anybody else despite insisting it plans too. I mean this is the industry that seemed to think people at least years Anime Expo would be thrilled to see a stateside announcement for something like Asterisk and that stuff like Aldnoah/Zero and Mekaku City Actors were the next big things.

This is why studio circlejerking is stupid as hell. Madhouse is also doing Kabaneri and SHAFT/Production IG is helping with Sansha Sanyo for example. And most of the heads in each project are pretty much freelancers going from project to project anyway. Only studio that makes sense to be a fan of is KyoAni since they keep their staff in-house and don't outsource to other studios aside from that one Korean ST Blue they always use for cleanup.

Actually studios barely fucking matter anymore outside of the ones big enough to be their own content producers and sit on production committees like Sunrise, I.G and it's subsidiaries, Kyoto Animation, Toei etc. What actually matters is the production committee who actually gets to call the shots which includes the likes of Bandai, Aniplex, Pony Canyon, Toho, Kadokawa, King etc. Most studios are just there to do bitch work and try to keep from going to deep in debt hoping for that one hit that either elevates them out of the producer bitch category or gets them more high profile contract work.

I don't think it's especially awful, just typically mediocre and filled with the kind of tropes we've seen oh so many times in recent seasons, kind of like everything that's airing right now. Anime and related media overuses the whole time loop reincarnation trope to a ridiculous degree this decade, like practically every other series with the sci-fi tag seems to use it now as well as some fantasy stuff. At least Winter had something like Rakugo that was way the fuck out there and even if it isn't everybody's cup of tea and it'll be back. This season I can't find one stand out show even if I continue to be moderately entertained by the continuing Jojo storyline. Everything is just either filled with played out character types and concepts or is a blatant ripoff of something else that was popular for better reasons a few years back.
