I did it, friends. After all this time I've finally settled down and got a good study regime. I've learned the N5 and N4 kanji in about a month and I'm reviewing Tae Kim's grammar after going through it once diligently.

I started learning Japanese in high school about 8 years ago, but I kept falling and couldn't pick myself back up. Learn from me, you have to get back up! All that progress shouldn't go to waste!

I think I can learn Japanese before the decade anniversary of when I started, which would make me really happy since I've already spent so much time on it. I just got really excited when I realized I was doing it and I wanted to make this post. I already have some language buddies, and although they're all Chinese it should help with kanji at least. I'm still looking for Japanese friends, obviously.

Core 6k wins all awards for contentious definition of "basic vocab". A Frequency Dictionary of Japanese is much better than the iKnow data.

For absolute beginners all this does is make things harder. Flashcards are shit at teaching multiple things at once. Not only does kanji order optimization take away the ability to quit the deck early and still have the most common X words of japanese, it also increases the load on how much the user needs to learn. The first 2k of nukemarine's 2k is going to much harder than the first 2k in A Frequency Dictionary of Japanese. The only place the kanji barrage of nukemarine's ordering comes in handy is when you're trying to relearn kanji through exposure.

No, Core 6k is perfect. Each and every word in there, with the exception of 日ソ is useful in common Japanese. The ordering is best for learning the maximum amount without ever introducing too many new kanji at once, which makes life much easier. Everyone should do it.

Anki's decent for building the basis when you're completely devoid of any vocabulary. Then, you start to encounter diminishing returns and realize that it's a lot better to keep reading and learn words and how they're specifically used there. Anki doesn't let you see these words in practice enough with its never-changing example sentences and there's clearly multiple ways a word can be used in most situations.

tl;dr just learn some basic vocabulary and start reading a lot while googling new words you encounter

Yeah, I'm losing it with synonyms after 2500-3000 cards (productionfag here, hence the unfortunate association of words with images).

Feel like it's almost better to cut down to ten words and just look at sentences in Jisho to see context/associated words. There's probably more to learn that way, but it feels slower.

I dunno dude and I haven't followed the conversation but I read like 5 VNs before starting anki and learned pretty quickly through that period. I did use something similar to anki before that though (readthekanji) but didn't realyl use it for SRS and really just brute forced my way through a shitload of vocabulary without learning it particularly well.

Basically, if you read like 3 hours a day then for a lot of the words you might have added to anki, you are seeing them much more frequently in reading than you would in anki. When that is the case, anki really does nothing. It's when you get to the level where new words may not pop up again for another couple weeks that anki really becomes important.

I watched a Youkai Watch (1&2) 実況 series and the Japanese is honestly some of the easiest I have ever seen in any media, extremely clear and easy to follow. If you only know 3000 words you will still have to check the dictionary constantly though.
