Why are Yaoi anime and manga often so shitty?
Seriously, how can anyone look at this and think "Yeah, this is good, let's publish this"?

Yeah, I don't get it, there might be some good series with BL subtext but I can't think of anything decent where the guys are actually gay.

There's less stuff catering to women than men, so I can only assume most women are conditioned to have lower standards.
Seriously, though, the least they could do is adapt stuff that actually has nice art. Junjou romantica and its relatives are trainwreck.

Niche markets tend to have lower standards in order to provide content to its readers. You can have a monthly or bimonthly yaoi anthology with a lot of repetitive, poorly drawn manga, or you could have a quarterly or semiannual one with fewer high quality series. It's no surprise a publishing company will go with a lot of crap fairly often than a little good shit less often
There's really good stuff out there, but they get pilled under all the bad quality stuff. There's also some that start well and then devolve into shit.
