What do you guys think about volume 6? I just finished reading it. It's fine overall but so far I think it's the weakest volume. It's really short and I didn't really enjoy the jokes. I guess Iris, the palace assault and Megumin antics saved it from mediocrity.

And holy shit Kazuma is currently really, like REALLY close to Megumin right now. I don't think anyone can catch up with her soon on Kazumabowl.

Note Aqua's and Kazuma's interaction when speaking to Katsuragi. Plus his mention of the Demon King's movements and such, there's a bit of unreliable narration on Kazuma's part in that instance which is interesting.

Not to mention it also deals a lot with Chris, which is important since, you know she's Eris. And it's because of that volume, and one scene in particular in seven, that gives Kazuma the evidence he needs to fully figure it out.

I think one of the volume's problems was the bland setting. It's just a generic capital, a castle, that's it. In Vol 4 we got the batshit insane hot spring town and in Vol 5 we got the chuuni village.

Speaking of this, while I'm somewhat glad the jealously thing hasn't really happened in the main party, I wonder why nobody really questions them on why Kazuma and Aqua always stick together.

Like they always ask questions on Kazuma's origins, and where he came from, but they never do with Aqua. I get that they probably think she's nuts since she claims to be a Goddess, but I still find it weird why they never ask how the two first met or why they were adventuring with each other in the first place.

It's really Lalatina's time to shine though; a big part of Volume 6 was getting a glimpse of what Darkness is like when she's not hanging around the party. This too, was build-up for the bit at the end where Darkness asks who the "real" Kazuma is.

Meanwhile the point of Aqua in that volume was that she was super in sync with Kazuma. The very first thing she does upon reuniting with him is get angry she can't laze around a castle too, she's just as eager to mooch off the landlord's house as he is, they have that extremely relaxed date, and at the end she has a burst in competence just like Kazuma.

This is a detail I feel like a lot of people miss, since all they concentrate on is Aqua's incompetence (which is also similar to Kazuma too).

Which I feel like will happen with volume 8 too. Since, aside from being a massive Eris ship tease volume, shows that Kazuma thinks about and worries for Aqua a lot more than he lets on. Surprisingly, his interactions with the "main heroine" are more subtle than the overt ones like Megumin and Darkness; which actually makes me appreciate their relationship a lot more.

I wonder if it is actually building up to something in volume 9.

Yeah I agree with you on Darkness' case. She's so 'normal' in that volume it was surprising. Poor Lalatina did everything to restrain the rest of Kazuma's party, she also helped a lot in Kazuma-Chris case. It shows when the stake is higher she can be very straight and serious. It seemed like she endured her maso urges a lot while in the capital.

Anyway I still enjoyed Megumin antics the most. Her and Iris fighting over Kazuma, becoming Kazuma's "fan" and finally Iris started calling her Megumin-nee, hngggg I think I almost got a heart attack. So fucking cute.

If you haven't been reading Explosion because you thought Megumin wasn't all that interesting on her own, you'll love Volume 3. It covers the time interval between Megumin arriving in Axel and joining Kazuma's party, and is basically an endless parade of references to stuff that happens to in the main series. You also get an idea of what everyone else was doing while Kazuma and Aqua were struggling to stay afloat.

Explosion ends with volume 3 too, so there's no retreat of previously occurred events either.
