He's decently written but I just don't like him. I can't sympathize with his EGAO struggle because it's simply not compelling enough for me. In all honesty it feels really stupid. Galaxy Eyes "Cipher" Dragon is straight forward enough - A Cipher is something that unlocks a code. Kaito's last moments alive in Zexal are spent forming the Numeron Code(before they bring him back with the Dragon Balls)

So "Cipher" is to unlock the mysteries of the code

Asuka's ace is a bit more interesting. Her aces in GX were based off the Japanese Seven Lucky Gods, but her ace here in Arc-V is based off of Hindu mythology

Though at least Sora got to beat fodder duelists like Security/Jobelisks on-screen. I don't remember Fubuki even winning against fodder opponents on-screen in GX. For a guy who was hyped as being as good as Kaiser by characters in GX, he certainly didn't live up to his reputation whatsoever. The only thing Fubuki is good for is being a siscon, and even then he was quickly one-upped by Rua, then Shark, then Shun.

He feels rather fresh as far as I am concerned. He has very down to earth yet prominent motivations. And his growth as a character, if arguably slow, is still a neat and progressive arc without too many bumps in it.
He also has interesting cards. And while he may force a theatrical theme onto his duels he recognizes that it is somewhat forced and contemplates on it and how it relates to everything else, for the audience to hear.

He is a quite great protagonist for a franchise like this to be honest.

The manga made him out to be some sort of guardian of the Pharaoh, since he appeared as an NPC in the tabletop game and appears to be an old figure even then. I'd say that if DSoD shows his meat body dying 10 years before, I'd say that it's canon and he was a ghost the entire time in the manga. Crow used a bunch of his old main deck blackwings and Jack used a bunch of his old resonators as well, you can even see Crimson Blader and Exploder Dragonwing in those flashbacks of him kicking ass to the top. I expect that Kaito will be the only character not to use any old cards because those were all tied to his Photon change mode and that's completely gone here.
