Their design and animation is not the problem. They need to hire outside writers or do more adaptations. Stop trying to do original content like they have been doing recently. Because their in house writers know nothing of character development or good flow.

Tamako Market was in 2013. They've done literally nothing but adaptations since.
It was also the best work they've done since 2013.
Their adaptations tend to be better than the original work, but if the original is really shit there's only so much they can do. Sometimes they do manage to do a fuckload though, the K-on manga is mediocre as fuck.

It's not kyoani problem. It's anime industry problem in general. Nips just stick to one succesful chardesign (it's even called "anime style") and use it forever because of lack of creativity
