For a moment there, I thought I had a grasp of when onyomi is used. But then the reading isn't even consistent with two vocab that follow the same pattern. I can't learn Japanese.

Aaaahhh, kanji, my favorite topic. With a language like Chinese, it actually makes sense! Kanji is great as long as you don’t totally f***k them up like the Japanese did.

I think a small number of characters have maybe a max of 2 readings. Even then, it’s because it means something completely different like 觉, which is “jiào” when it means “to sleep” and “jué” when it means “to think”. Let’s compare that to Japanese, which for instance has like a million readings for 「生」. What the hell, 「なま」 doesn’t even originate from Chinese! Why the heck do you write it with a Chinese character?!

Chinese is so much simpler that it wins hands down over Japanese here. It’s not even a contest. The only beef I have with Chinese is simplified, traditional, blah blah, blah… just pick one! Don’t make me have to learn both! The Japanese government can successfully mandate a new set of characters and they don’t even have a real army. Why can’t you?

There are only like a dozen kanji with this many readings. It isn't remotely as big of a deal as you make it out to be.

>There are only like a dozen kanji with this many readings. It isn't remotely as big of a deal as you make it out to be.

It's the jump from 1 to 2 readings that makes Japanese significantly harder. Like, the jump from 1 to 2 is as much of a difficulty leap as from 2 to 12
>>
>>140783461
The only point I was trying to make by quoting that blog post was that kanji is a bit of a clusterfuck since it wasn't created for the Japanese language. When you know how kanji (hanzi) works in Chinese, you realise just how fucked up its use in Japanese is in comparison.

Basically, I was trying to dispel that guy's idea that kanji readings weren't making sense to him because of some deficiency on his part.
>>
>>140782761
Why are you quoting Kim as though he is some sort of authority on kanji? He is an amateur who wrote a decent free introductory grammar guide.

Use your own words if you have any.
>>
>>140783806
>kanji is a bit of a clusterfuck since it wasn't created for the Japanese language
And "Chinese" isn't one set of characters, they also have varied influence from different dynasties over time and not only that the readings for hanzi can vary from dialect to dialect, and there are thousands of them in mainland China alone.

>When you know how kanji (hanzi) works in Chinese, you realise just how fucked up its use in Japanese is in comparison.
Yes, and when you know more about how characters are used in China, you'll feel glad that you're learning Japanese and not a Chinese language. At least readings in Japanese are consistent over the nation and don't dynamically change from ward to ward.

>>140789580
Change the "maximum reviews/day" to something large like 500-1000.
Start off with like 20 cards per day, and adjust it depending on how much free time you have - raise it if you have more time, and lower it if anki is taking too long.
Set leeches to mark only instead of automatically suspending them.

Everything else can and should be left default.
>>
>>140789683
thanks, i think i'll do this, got a lot of free time at the moment so 20 cards a day should be fine.

It's a question that has plagued Japanese scholars for millennia. This image was originally found on a solid sheet of titanium 50 feet tall, written in a language that hadn't even been invented yet.

Unfortunately, it seems we will never understand what the ancient civilization that created such an object meant by "zoi". Today, the image has been faithfully recreated online from highly detailed scans of the tablet's surface, and is usually posted simply to illicit confusion.

Truly, Japanese is the most complex of languages.
>>
>>140789964

>>
so how does everyone grind out words with core2k? do they take notes of the words and examples given or do they just repeatedly view the cards until it sinks in?
>>
>>140790134
Yeah sure I write it down like 10 times my review sessions only take about 3-4 hours to complete
>>
>>140790192
i mean for the learning part not the review part
>>
>>140790134
Independent of the core2k deck you should be learning Kanji. It gets much easier to learn and recognize vocab when you understand the Kanji that comprise it independently.
>>
>>140790334
That's not true you don't even need kanjis and hiragana just learn the vocabs
>>
>>140790422
You don't need them but knowing the kana and kanji make recollection much quicker and easier.
>>
>>140790438
That's just not true I know all the vocab and don't know a single kanji. Go jerk off to your RTK...
>>
>>140790334
so do you think i should just be attempting to absorb both the information in core2k while independently learning kanji until it gets easier?
>>
>>140790474
No, kanji is literally useless just like the kana make sure to learn vocab and mimic the sounds and you will just guess the kanjis by their shape.
>>
>>140790470
You would have memorized your vocab more quickly and be able to more quickly assimilate new vocab if you understood Kanji.

>>140790474
The initial cards in core2k are pretty easy. Just work on both at your own pace and they'll reinforce each other.
>>
>>140790553

What settings for new interval do you use? 0%? I got new interval 40% but I'm not sure if changing it would be good since the reviews would increase a lot. That being said with an interval mod. of 100% this should be ok right?

Man I'm so sick of anki, it has its benefits because you get to see words way more often and I appreciate that it exists, but I feel like it could be done so much better somehow

Seeing vocab out of context just seems so pointless, context is such a huge component of any language, especially Japanese, and just going through hundreds of cards with one word on the front just doesn't seem like the best way to go about doing things

It just seems like an unrealistic approach to learning vocab, it's hardly relevant to being exposed to the actual language and just ends up making me feel like I know less than I actually do
>>
>>140791695
What does it change?
>>
>>140791772
Read the anki guide
>>
>>140791788
Can't be bothered to do that lol
>>
>>140791755
The core2k deck includes examples of the word being used in context with every card. Ideally you'd be learning by reading books (or games or whatever) that's proven to have the best retention. But anki works nicely as a supplement I think.
>>
>>140791856
Those examples are on the back though, the front is still just the word

The problem I find is there are just so many times where I'll see a word on the front of an anki card and struggle really hard with it, often getting it wrong, but if I were to see that same word in context it would pop into my head without batting an eye
>>
>>140791893
I guess, being able to recall a word without being prompted by context is a good skill to have though. Even if you're iffy about picking the word 100% of the time from the front of a card you should be able to recognise it when you're reading something.
>>
>>140791893
Sounds like you really need to start assosciating kanji with the readings that go with them. I guess you're also using someone else's deck instead of mining your own. You'll have a much better time with anki if you use it to retain knowledge, not to introduce new knowledge
>>
>>140792051
No, Kanji are not connected to vocab in any way they are separate things and you don't need Kanji.
>>

Maybe choose a different deck or change yours?
>>
>>140792077
Yes all you need is Romanjis
>>
>>140791920
I do have a really hard time with understanding shit outside of context in general, like if I start reading something in the middle of a conversation I'll have no idea what's going on, I guess it's more of a me problem

>>140792051
I have spent a couple of months doing a jouyou kanji deck to completion before but I'm still pretty bad at remembering onyomi, and nah I've been mining all my vocab for years

>>140792090
If you do that you start associating the sentence with the answer though instead of just the word
>>
my akebi app just stopped working for no reason
is there a better option out there?
>>
>>140792196
>I have spent a couple of months doing a jouyou kanji deck to completion before but I'm still pretty bad at remembering onyomi
I didn't mean that you should do a seperate deck for readings, I meant that when you learn a word like 禁忌 you need to realize that you just learned 2 onyomi aswell and you need to capitalize on that.
You will also notice connections between certain radicals and readings which will make vocabulary even easier to remember.
For example 忌 キ 記 キ 起 キ
>>
>>140792196
>>140792196
I only read the sentence when I'm not sure about the context.

Reading it always would take too much time.

I think this is the best place to ask, and I don't wanna make a seperate thread for this, but how do I into the translating/subbing scene?
I feel like translating some mangos and animus would be great practice, and I would enjoy doing it.
How does one get into the "scene"? just start doing a series no major group picked up yet, and keep doing it ?
>>
>>140798843
>性同一性障害
That's a funny word. Is it identical to "gender dysphoria", or does it mean something slightly different?
>>
>>140799036
First you have to get N1.
>>
>>140799036
Translate something, release it, and step on as many dramaqueens' feet as possible

The scanlation thread will tell you otherwise but this is the only path
>>
>>140799084
This is honestly what I'm most afraid of, cliques and shit. Not because I'm afraid of muh cyberbully muh harrassment, but that my releases would go unnoticed, or if a bigger team picks it up, it was all pointless.
Also, I don't know shit about photoshop, but I guess that's the least of my concerns
>>
>>140799165
I've never done it, but I imagine scanlating is about 10% translating and 90% Photoshop.
>>
>>140799165
Typesetting is easy
Make a second layer, draw white over the original text
Adult the white level of the original image so that it's seamless with the white you drew on the second layer
Use a recent version of photoshop and add text with the text tool, you can use an arbitrary shape like a circle or ellipse

But no I wasn't joking or describing a fear when I said "step on as many peoples' toes as possible". It's actually something you have to go out and intentionally do. Otherwise nobody will notice your releases.
>>
>>140799165
>my releases would go unnoticed, or if a bigger team picks it up, it was all pointless.
This happens all the time. And if you stop, no one will care and another group will pick it up like you never existed. Do it if you enjoy it but don't expect to get anything out of it, not even thanks, or you'll just hate it.

Just like in the west, nip monks were scholars, healers, etc. aswell. They bread animals, translated, copied texts, they teached, so obviously this left it's mark in the language itself. >>140804952
I sincerely doubt you can write 2614 kanji without looking them up. I asked because I know native speakers, and they can maybe write 1000, but it varies wildly, since most people just use computers and phones.
>>
>>140804971
>Sometimes
I mean, whenever I can't fucking stop lapsing a word in core, and I'm not just overwhelmed, the radicals help me pretty easily because I can break it down. It's not like I spent two months learning kanji through brute or anything. I just read through a list and then installed a second deck alongside core.

That's because most native speakers don't use RTK or spaced repetition or even practice writing after high school.

Here, at about 00:32, at the end of the second line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11APMPHMl8s
>Remember しわが一つずつ増えてく
>明日のこと考えるの楽しくなってもう

And here, at about 01:13 at the end of the first: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4uTrQHHASs
>心のど真ん中を撃ちぬかれてもう

>胸に空いたこの穴をどうにかしてよね
>許さないんだから heart shooter

My first thought was that this was just ~ても with the final sound lengthened, perhaps because it sounds better that way when sung by a Vocaloid. The first example kind of makes sense if this is true, and I've seen it translated this way before:
>Remember, our wrinkles go on increasing one by one
>Even if it becomes exciting to think about what tomorrow holds,
>Since every time we get another wrinkle
>I get to meet a happier-looking you than yesterday,
>Let's go on keeping things as they are.
This makes sense because "keeping things as they are" does kind of cancel out "thinking about tomorrow." But maybe I'm mistaken?

I feel like it doesn't make sense translated like that in the second one, which then prompts me to re-think the meaning of the first example.
I think 撃ちぬかれてもう is actually an expression of exasperation at her heart getting shot out, not "even though my heart was shot out." In the same way, I think 楽しくなってもう might be an expression of disbelief at how fun it's becoming, not "even though it becomes fun," which slightly changes the meaning of those five lines.
Which do you think it is? Sorry in advance if I'm just overthinking a stupid question.

That's different, you're just using radicals as a hook then.Like you can learn that 戈 means spear, but it won't really help that much. Whatever floats your boat I guess.
If you really wanna get into it though, you could learn their categories, like where can they be placed. It's up to you, but if you're just going ot use japanese for self entertainment purposes, I see no point.

Is there any good way to pre-learn vocab from Japanese subs without reading all the way through them? I have a .txt file of every word Rikai has imported to compare them to, so theoretically it should be possible to parse the sub file for new words, then delete the ones already mined. Does such a tool exist? If not, how do those of you who mine vocab from subs go about it?
>>
>>140799226
Yep, I tried scanlating one 20 pages doujin I liked, translation was done in like 20 minutes but typesetting that shit took so long I eventually gave up and just dumped raw pages with text translation in a thread here.
>>
>>140806148
Most people mine words as they read.
>>
>>140806148
If you don't mind using Epwing2Anki then you can parse the whole text file and it'll only add new words (duplicates deleted). That said bulk adding new words through a processor like that isn't always a wise idea and furthermore you'll need to fit Epwing into the same format that your mining deck uses.

I can back this up as someone who hand scanlated 5-10 doujins. Translation was always a cinch, it was the editing that sucked and took up a lot of time. Eventually I paired up with an editor but since he did all the "real" work I couldn't ask for money anymore so that was the end of that.

But class hours are ridiculously inefficient and poorly-spent at 99% of schools, 1400 class hours basically translates to around 200 extra hours of independent study.

Yeah, but those 1400 class hours are spread out, so they're less inefficient per time than cramming at things that take spaced intervals to learn properly.

if you put "spelling conventions" into english google do you expect to find people talking about correcting typos in books they quote

for someone who claims to be smart you sure aren't

except it is, you just have a shallow understanding of the topic because all you did was skim google once

Did you properly google the phrase?
Here is the answer:
「 ない 」は、なにかを打ち消す時につける言葉で、
「 無い 」は、在るか無いかの「無い」ということ。

I'm not reading the dumb argument you guys are having because I don't care and 99% of arguments on DJT are worthless garbage, but there's a difference between giving up because you lost an argument and giving up because you know the other person is stubborn and autistic enough that they ARE willing to argue endlessly for the rest of the thread and into the next one, so you'd rather just leave it be for the sake of not shitting up the thread any longer because absolutely nothing will come out of continuing to respond.

I stopped seriously discussing when it became a back and forth anyway, the discussion shifted from the mistyping of quotes to him being uptight about me reading a post correctly. There wasn't a lot to gain from seriously discussing something like that.

I wish we could have gone in and force fed Japan English when we had the chance.

In all seriousness, it's an interesting language. Like how "water" plus "day of the week" becomes "Wednesday".

If it moved to DJT I'm pretty sure the autistic spammer(s) that hate DJT would still follow it there and spam it (honestly most of the recent problems are a result of one or two people). Quite a fair amount of threads on /a/ don't even get replies before falling to page 10 and dying though, so it's not like this thread even takes up space. Just add "DJT" to your filters if you don't wanna see it.

Outside of Sakura autist / this dumb anime/poop poster who doesn't seem to actually know an Japanese beyond the basic section of Tae Kim (assuming it's not actually just Sakura autist), they really weren't better. It was the same shit but with lots of dumb arguments about RTK.

The only thing that likely changed was you getting better at Japanese and outgrowing these threads.
>>
>>140823006
Honestly it's pretty much always been shit the only golden age was back when steve was a thing. Or maybe the few months a year where traffic gets really low

Like before this Jamal and spammer shit we had the maki poster and fin who were pretty annoying as well. Then the argumentative autist before that.

I pretty much always get a helpful answer to my questions as long as it's not a really stupid question that can easily be found in DoJG or something. Bad low effort questions usually get bad low effort answers. Not saying that you'll ALWAYS get a helpful answer, but more often than not it's the fault of the person asking the question. You do have to kind of pick the right time to ask sometimes though.

I dont get the last section at all. Why is he saying

Ok I understood that.

まず、日本の感覚では、理解にあと10年はかかると思います。
??? Firstly, from Japan's intuition, it would take 10 years to understand i think?

返品がするいとは、思いません。満足いかないものを高額で売った会社が、返品を受け入れるというのは、器の大きいアメリカのカスタマーサービスなんだと思いますが、、。
"They wont think of the reason for the return. If you arent satisfied the company that sold it expensive will give you a refund, I think its a tolerant system. "

高額な品物が、一年以内で壊れたら、それはそれは、大きな損失で、日本だったら、仕方ないで終わるのですか。すべての品物に保証書はないので。たぶん、日本で、こんなことを言ったら、すごく非難されるのでしょうか。

"If a expensive item breaks within a year, that's that, its a big loss, if it was Japan it would be over, nothing can be done. Not everything has a warranty. Probably if you said this in Japan people would be annoyed.

Could always take screenshots and look the words up afterwards, adding them to Anki. Not perfectly streamlined but at least you can take instant screenshots with Steam. Some form of silver lining.
