It was good. The animation aged badly, but it was possible to get used to. It really felt comfy though.

It had good music, as mentioned already.

It followed the manga well. It cut Wyald and the Bakiraka unfortunately, but those weren't the highest points of the story, so I can forgive that.
It also cut Skull Knight and Silat, but since they never meant to continue after Eclipse, it's also forgivable.

I can't quite put my finger on what made it so enjoyable, but as I mentioned, it felt really, really comfy.

I remember watching the very last episode of the anime adaption randomly one day on television.
I believe it was on the Scy-fy/sci-fi/whatever it was called at the time Channel. Pretty intense.
Too bad the manga has fallen from its grace.

I love it. Really well casted voice acting, the soundtrack is simple but very fitting, and I really like the character design (Griffith often looks too feminine in the manga and I think the show did a good job of making him look beautiful while still masculine).

It's hard not to like because it really was Berserk at it's best. The Guts/Caska/Griffith dynamic really is the heart of the series, and it's been nonexistent for two decades because two-thirds of the triad have become basically soulless.

Yeah I'm watching it right now, probably going to read the manga. I know what I'm getting myself into when I that decision.

The Caska part I don't mind so much since it worked well to teach us a lot about Guts and she'll be getting healed eventually, but Griffith being all robo-Femto has always sucked. No tension when the bad guy doesn't even acknowledge the protagonist.

Not if you don't already know the story. They cut out a lot, you won't probably even remember names of some characters.
The CGI is mostly terrible as well, although the third movie has some good moments.

It's up to you, honestly, it isn't that bad, if you read the manga before, but you won't be blown away by it, for sure.

Tbh, I expected worse after the first PV, but here it doesn't seem that bad. The CGI in this one seems bearable, and I fucking love this shading on Guts. Feels old school.

Currently watching it. Bought all the DVDs.

Oh takes are fucking gold. I know you guys like them but honestly my favorite thing is that griffiths voice actor would just break out singing show tunes for minutes on end in the middle of scenes. It's amazing.

Also the show is good because it captures Guts loneliness and the sense of destiny and loss from the manga very well and the music emphasizes this. Most of the themes feel solemn and regretful and the show takes the time to let characters interact and just feel genuine.


Worst part of the whole thing is the fucking enemy captain they added. He is the fucking worst. Even good episodes are ruined just by his presence.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about him. Yeah, I've got to agree, he was irritating, and from what I remember they actually added some anime only scenes with him. What a terrible idea. I think they should have kept him to the minimum, and instead use that time to do the Bakiraka trying to kill the party running with Griffith, or Wyald, or Silat, or anyhing, really.

I like that aspect of it because it makes it feel like he is utterly beyond him and untouchable. He was always distant but now that he has achieved a part of his dream it's taken him further away from what he once was. It makes the whole situation feel hopeless.

honestly I've only made it through 10 episodes and it's pretty boring imo, I've read various random chapters of the manga after this arc and they are so much more interesting

Aside from no Wyald or Bakiraka and the lack of Skull Knight in the final episode or two, it's pretty faithful. And it adds in some humor that the manga didn't have. At the time of the anime's production, the manga was only a few volumes into the next arc anyway.

Forgive my faggotry, but I rather disliked how the guy just showed up and saved Guts and Casca in the manga, just as some method to save some of the main cast.

Maybe it's just cause I watched the anime first, but I just assumed that Griffith let Guts survive the eclipse just as a big, evil middle finger.

Lack of Skull Knight worked well in the anime, where they didn't plan on continuing it, but in the context of entire story he's very important.

And pretty awesome, too, just look at he's armour. Badass.

I introduced my friend to Berserk through the anime about 2 months back. Started at episode 2 for obvious reasons. By episode 5 he was completely hooked.
Like a lot of other anons have said already there is just something comfy about it. I think it's a combination of the godlike OST with the old-school animation and sense of loneliness. The anime is a pretty damn good introduction to Berserk because lets face it, the Black Swordsman Arc doesn't leave the best first impression.

I love it. Someone who hates moe stuff told me to watch it. I thought it was going to suck, and couldn't have been more wrong. I was so confused when it ended at the eclipse, then I found out it was based on a manga.

I made that mistake when I discovered Vinland Saga not knowing it was an ongoing monthly. Decided I wasn't going to make the same mistake with Berserk.
Put off reading the manga for 2 years before caving in last year. It's now been about 15 months and I've nearly caught up, been buying a volume almost every fortnight. Got volume 36 mail now. Just glad I can finally join in with the discussions and everything.

It's the best part of the manga and doesn't cut out a whole lot. Visuals have some charm to them and the OST was amazing.

Honestly, I might prefer the anime to the overall manga. Everything after Golden Age went downhill.

It got me to read the manga. I always ignored it because of how long it was but I needed more after the anime ended on the note it did. Now it's my favorite manga.

To each their own but I've never understood this. The Conviction Arc was pretty much Miura's style perfected and has an amazing ending culminating in one of the most iconic two spreads in the whole manga.
My personal favourite is the Falcon of the Millennium Empire Arc. The start of that Arc with the fight between Guts and Zodd on the hill of swords is probably my favourite fight in the manga. Plus Guts inner struggle and opening up to his new companions is great.

I think people say this because Berserk could have easily ended there, and in a lot of adaptations it does. I agree with you and actually enjoy post-golden age more but the two ends are very different in tone. I guess some people just prefer the tone and story of the golden age. I prefer demon hunting, jrpg parties, and cross-country adventures.

There was a great supported theory that Guts is really Corkus' only friend. No one else really acknowledges Corkus or is as nice to Corkus as Guts was despite Corkus always being an ass. I wish I had saved the analysis.

I agree with this guy. Its a different kind of dynamic in a protagonist antagonist relationship that will feel so much better when Guts finally forces Griffith to acknowledge him when he confronts him.
