Who the fuck puts a young girl in a shitty empty cell just because she might be the killer of her sister?
>>
The judge, by request of the prosecutor. And the empty cell is quite generous.

It might not be the best in the franchise, but that first real case of JFA really grabs you by the balls when it comes to emotional investment.

Japan's legal system is fucked up. 99% conviction rate.

That's not why the rate is so high.
In Japan 99% of cases that end in a guilty verdict (and that's not a hyperbole, that's the actual statistic) the first suspect is declared guilty.
Unlike the rest of the world, Japan operates on a "guilty until proven innocent" policy.

>>140410917
Being a defense attorney in the real world isn't about winning though.
The stark majority of time you're going to be defending a guilty man, and often there is no way to avoid the verdict completely.
The mark of a good attorney isn't winning all the time, it's getting the smallest possible sentence for their clients.
>>
>>140412134
> Right to remain silent
> I'm gonna interrogate you now okay?
>>
>>140410917
Actually you don't because defense attorney's are considered trash in Japan.
>>
>>140412771
>The mark of a good attorney isn't winning all the time, it's getting the smallest possible sentence for their clients.
Actually no, best case scenario is setting up a deal with prosecution they would agree on.
>>
>>140412807
Then why would one become a lawyer in Nippon?
>>
>>140412845
> What is a plea bargain
>>
>>140412845
That's something that happens in Civil Law, not Criminal Law.
Crimes that fall under the spectrum of criminal law can't be solved with a deal. It's simply not legal.
You can decide not to press charges if, say, someone accidentally levels your mailbox and doesn't want to pay.
But if someone is a suspected murderer the law doesn't give a shit if you want to strike a deal. That person is either getting a Not Guilty verdict or they're going to be locked up.
>>
>>140412867
It's a deal with prosecution exclusive to criminal cases.
>>
>>140412866
Because that guy has no idea what he's talking about, and he's getting his idea from the Phoenix Wright games.
It's a very lucrative job, albeit with the constant knowledge that you're helping criminals evade their just punishments.

> Why would one become a garbage man?
Getting Law degree is a very fucking specific goal that can be only accomplished via hard work or bribery.

> Why would one become a beggar?
How are beggar and garbage man on the same level as lawyer?

> Why would one stand next to a wall with an apple on his head while roudy rich drunks shoot arrows in their general direction?
You literally don't need education for that.

>While the widespread underhanded behavior among prosecutors is a little exaggerated, the idea of the prosecutor as a very powerful individual with a high social status has roots in the history of the Japanese legal system. Traditionally, prosecutors were considered part of the judiciary and regarded themselves on the same level, or higher, than judges. Conversely, attorneys were considered far lower on the totem pole due their inferior level of legal education and their lack of influence in the bureaucracy. While post-war reforms have evened this out a bit, prosecutors retain a great deal of status and clout. The games reflect this, not just in the broad depiction of prosecutors as arrogant and powerful, but in how other characters perceive them. Edgeworth travels first class and drives expensive cars, while Nick rarely has two cents to rub together. Prosecutors are treated with awe and admiration, while Nick doesn't get much respect from anyone, including his own assistants.
>Prosecutors exercise great control over all aspects of the criminal process. Their presence looms large from the crime scene to the courtroom. Unique to the Japanese system, prosecutors often directly oversee investigations. While the investigating officers technically have primary responsibility, in practice, prosecutors often take charge and issue orders to the police. In Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, we get to see this in action as the prosecutor directs a series of investigations and bosses around the local police
>>
>>140413020
There is a difference between "They're not as important as prosecutors" and "They're trash", though.

A defense attorney is still a person who completed a law degree and is superior to many other jobs. The only difference is that their authority doesn't have the same influence of prosecutors.
>>
>>140412902
Most criminal cases never go to trial.

Unlike the rest of the world, Japan operates on a "guilty until proven innocent" policy.

Funny thing is that America's jury system is flawed because one big problem is reminding the Jury that the defendant is innocent until proven guilty but the Jury believes it is the defendant's job to prove that they are innocent so they see the defendant as guilty in the first place.

They have to remind everyone of this every single time so the fact that Japan operates on a guilty until proven innocent basis is not a Unique Bias that only Japan has but even America first time jury members share this bias.
>>
>>140413252
>Unlike the rest of the world, Japan operates on a "guilty until proven innocent" policy.
Not legally; the problem is totally one of culture and practice.
The Constitution forbids convictions based solely on a confession, but a little planted evidence here or there is enough.
Really, the absurd and inhumane lengths they go to to extract a confession have less to do with conviction rates and more to do with the notion that it's the criminal justice system's "sacred duty" to force wrongdoers to admit their sins so they can be turned into model nips in the future.
>>
>>140413252
Japan isn't the only place on Earth to use such a system, you know.

>Unlike the rest of the world
The rest of the world has many systems.
Even within colonies that base the law on their colonizer, there is usually many differences.
Guilty until Proven seem to be fairly common.
But there is also a difference between "Prosecutors actually only bring in cases they can win" is also a different thing that Guilty until proven otherwise

Why is Phoenix and Maya's relationship so heatwarmingly pure, shipping or not?

Honestly, I actually really enjoyed Big Top, but there were so many moments where Phoenix makes insane leaps of logic where it gets pretty tough to figure out what evidence they want from you, especially on the 2nd day. I don't know what problems people normally have with it, but I thought the premise of the case was really neat and executed pretty well
