Why is good immortal/non-immortal stuff so rare? The only good stuff you can find is very short and often span the same sort of time frame a normal relationship would.

Hardly any author that uses the immortality concept to it's full potential by utilizing timeskips and character aging/growth.

I can only really think of 1 or 2 series that actually span a large gap of time. It seems like the immortality thing is unnecessary and used like "Oh she looks 10 but she's actually 500, so it's cool" in a lot of stuff (pic not related).

Good example of immortality not just being an add-on would be something like Kurozuka.

That's true i would like to see a manga/anime where the relationship between an immortal and mortal is the focus of the story.
Or just the life of an immortal person in a span of a few hundred or thousand years.

The immortality is normaly just an aspect of a character and doesn't really play a big part in the story...at least in animes and magas i watched/read so far.
>>
>>140361365
>>140359864
The problem with immortals is that it's harder to make good stories around them. Like, the conflicts are generally harder to make because the character can't really die and immortals will become numb to the world around them eventually. Yeah you can have it be character based, but let's say they fall in love and watch the love age and then die. What next? The character arc is basically over, if they have the character move and and repeat the cycle it just sort of cheapens the experience and makes the MC feel like an idiot or someone who doesn't care about the people he loved to stop himself from falling in love again.

timeskips could be cool if they did something where a character has a long-term goal where they slowly conquer the world or something, I guess.
>>
>>140361629
The mortal one becoming immortal too via some plot fuckery typically works pretty well.
>>
>>140361629
I think it works if the immortal character has some overarching goal that only works due to being able to live so long. Like you said, conquering the world. Or it could even be trying to save the world by bringing world peace kind of thing. That's generally not possible within a regular human life span but if you're an immortal, maybe there's a chance.
>>
Have you read UQ Holder, OP?
>>
>>140361777
That's one of the things I was thinking about as I complained to be honest

They have like 8 month long training arcs, when it should be something like 50 years to utilize the unique dynamics of immortality.

Episodic/interconnected episodic can work pretty well for immortal protagonists. Fushigi na Shounen's isn't so much immortal as omnipotent though

Even multiple romances don't make each other feel cheapened if done right.
>>
>>140361692
At that point why bother with immortality at all? Just to show the characters surroundings change while they remain static? There are plenty of fish-out-of-water stories that do that, and a few time travel ones as well.
>>
>>140362084
If anything, I believe immortals wouldn't be static since they experience and can learn from mistakes. They should be the ones who make the most mistakes and the ones who change the most.
>>
>>140361629
I don't think so. Being immortal "unlockes" quite a few possible scenarios we basically never see. I don't remember an anime where an immortal struggeled with his emotions while he watches everyone around him slowly die.

We never saw the story of an immortal wandering around in the world trying to find reason for his life.

We never saw the story of an immortal trying to kill himself and slowly go insane.

There are many quite intresting scenarios other then "becomming numb" and even when the immortal gets "numb" in the end there would a lot of intesting storytelling and possible scenarios to that point.

I mean there are many ways how to show the life of an immortal. You could make 24 episode of an immortal getting his power and his first love and his struggle with it.
Or of an immortal just wandering around and how he affects the places where he has been like a force of nature.
Or you could make a story about 2 immortals meeting, falling in love but have diffrent viewpoints how they value "nonimmortals" and eventually fighting against each other.

There are sooooooooo many ways. And we have yet to see even one.
>>
>>140359864

I'm going to assume that writing about that is hard because no author has any first hand experience about being immortal.
>>

Themes in faction are easier to do when it has real life proxies

What you see in fantasy and sci fi are often social commentaries on real life proxies.

immortals? has no real life proxy

neither does time travel

that's why those genre are hard to write about and generally a mess

>>
>>140362925
>etc
Come on, anon, expand more on it.
>>
>>140362799

I'm not sure what you mean that.

But I guess you could use the history of one select culture, anthropomorphize it into one immortal character

If we used that as an example than I'd say the thing an immortal would be most concerned about is its changing cultural identity, ideology and moral values?

It would seek to preserve what it has left and limit or avoid influence from others.

So I guess an immortal would gradually become more insular and avoid personal contact with others. I would not be lonely and seek company. It would be defensive, insular and anti social.

Of course this is just one interpretation.

My favorite immortal falling in love with a non-immortal person story was that one Greek tale with some demigoddess whose name I can't remember falling in love with a Mortal and begging Zeus to make him immortal as well.
Zeus does, however he doesn't make the mortal immune to aging so the entire rest of the story is the two lovers begging Zeus to make him mortal again so he doesn't have to live in torment./spoiler]
Other than that, Immortality stories kinda suck due to being tied towards mythologies and mysticism so the author must create a specific world and rules and absolutely abide by them

I'm too tired to type it out, but it's like
>Immortal tries to do x
>Spends # of years failing to do x
>Gives up on x
>Cynicism regarding x develops
>New immortal comes along
>Wants to do x
>Knows about all the way old immortal tried to do x and failed
>However doesn't have old immortal's acquired cynicism
>Can actually accomplish x by hinging on old immortal's failures
>Develops old immortal's character (unchanging through the centuries) via these actions

UQ Holder doesn't utilize immortality's functionality very good, but it does have some okay abstracts.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when an immortal person can be changed just via interaction and not action. You get this a lot in manga/anime where teenagers are lecturing the immortal dude on how to live their life correctly, as if they would know best. Like that really turned me off to Meteor Methuselah and to a lesser extent certain parts of Trigun.

I like the Highlander setup for telling an immortal character's story. Start towards the end and flashback to the moments that helped to define this Immortal's life. It's also interesting to see how characters who keep the same core (In this movie one wants to create the perfect empire) and adapts it across the ages. Really the original movie, this one, and the tv series have a lot of good stories centered around immortal characters.

It retcons large portions of the original movie for dumb reasons. Biggest one was creating the planet Zeist which becomes the homeworld of the immortals. And the game they were playing wasn't for ultimate power but the choice to either go home or grow old. They bring back Sean Connery's character for no reason, and the movie becomes some environmental "save the planet" wank.

It's universally panned and unfortunately the live action highlander films never got better. But we still got a sweet tv series out of it and the animated movie is still good.

Hana to Akuma played it well. The mortal FeMC's children outlived her.

Bastard, while not the main focus, had various aspects of immortality in relationships that were well done.

Mahou Tsukai no Yome doesn't do much for me because the immortal guy doesn't seem to have much experience to make him a convincing immortal.

Well sort of, it was abundantly obvious they were going to make Akira immortal eventually through some bullshit or other, which they did.

>Losing your telomeres makes you immortal
What? Those are the quality checkers for your cells when they split, you should be aging faster without them, what you need is telomeres that don't shorten.

Akira became some kind of werewolf god since vampires originally cursed werewolves since they were too OP. I got fuckin chills when all the Werewolf elders showed up, took one look at Akira and told Mina that they no longer serve vampires. It was pretty based, I just wish there was more bestiality.
>>
>>140378040
You mean the part where they asked to be released from her service so they could go fight Rozenman to the death? Because that sure as hell wasn't because they thought they were too good to serve her now.
>>
>>140378097
Nah it was both. They said they wanted to be released because they saw that the future of werewolf kind was secured and didn't mind dying for that future. They were dying for Akira and not Mina.
>>
>>140377181
Probably not happening, thanks to that loli-triggered newfag and his spam.
>>
>>140377687
It may just be her delusion
>>
>>140378172
Except the part where they say they've been living all this time to protect Mina because her mother told them to and otherwise they would have died with her. And the part where they say in the "new age" Akira and the other young werewolves need to do the same and protect her right? They say nothing about the werewolves future in regards to being separated from the vampires and in fact encourage it.
>>
>>140378296
Like I'm looking at the page now and it says "From now on it is the duty of you young pups to give your lives in service to her majesty, understand?" There's no way you can twist that to say they think the werewolves should be separated from service of the vampires or that they expect Akira to do anything like that.
>>
>>140378296
What about the fact that they immediately choose to die there when they hear about Akira's transformation? I mean they still expect him to serve her family but still. I guess I was wrong about the "no longer serving" part.

I think it's cool that they trusted the future of their race with Akira though.
>>
>>140378498
They were passing on the torch, they said that by all rights they should have died long ago with their old master but persisted in living because she told them to protect her daughter. It was a change of the old guard to the new generation and nothing more. It just showed that they trusted Akira to protect her and nothing more.
>>
I know, right? I was looking for something with that theme of story happening over span of centuries, but with the same character after I've seen Highlander.
>>
The Blame! manga is practically about immortal transhumans doing shit over a very very very very very long time.
Also, regeneration powers and stuff.
>>
>>140378546
There's the implication that comes along with the fact that the curse that caused werewolves being killed once bitten by vampires has been beaten by Akira. Not only that, but Akira is clearly her husbando. It's pretty apparent that they're trusting him with her protection, and the future of their race, otherwise they wouldn't have any of that backstory.

Nah, I doubt that, it was straight forward as we know directly what happened. His remains still had his soul and they reunited.
