The entire show was basically a nationalistic advertisement for the JSDF. At every imaginable point they drive hope the point to the viewer that the JSDF are undefeatable badasses, but who also have a lot of heart and are surrounded by lolis.

It had so much potential to be a top-notch military fantasy anime on part with 08th Mobile Suit Team, but instead it's 60% ego stroking and 40% harem. So really, 100% ego stroking, just of two different varieties.

I made it to about episode 9 before I dropped it because I could see how much of a shit storm it was. Besides being a JSDF circle jerk which was so obvious it doesn't need to be stated anymore; the show was so shallow and bland. Not to mention nothing even challenged the "mighty JSDF superior nippon army" any more than a bunch of taliban insurgents with sticks and rocks for weapons. It was a horrible show to the core and its amazing its even this popular to begin with. Further evidence that most plebs who watch this crap don't even know decent story telling if it bit them in the ass.

They end up surprising and fighting eachother, meanwhile the Japanese forces predicted some special forces bullshit like this would happen and tries to capitalise on the confusion to wipe them all out. I don't give a shit about whether it's realistic or nationalistic, but it gets kinda boring when they establish in the second episode of first season that nothing this fantasy world can throw at them will be any kind of threat. After that, the only source of suspense is politicians being dicks and minor characters waiting for Itami to arrive and bail them out of whatever shit they're in. Just feels like a total waste of a fantasy setting to have no sense of adventure into the dangerous unknown. At best, it's like going on a safari.
