At one point there was the "Gotei" which was a gang of murderous scumbags led by Yama, these are the guys that defeated Yhwach.
The Gotei had captains and normal Shinigami in it.
At one point after that Yama founded the Shinigami academy to train future Shinigami.
Shunsui and Ukitake were the first Captains that graduated from the academy.

The previous captains, in other words, the member of the original gotei, did not graduate from the academy, because it did not exist.

Shunsui just happens to fight the guy whose initial power was putting holes in anything ignoring the usual defenses, a reasonable match up for his own conceptual type power. He just then goes on to become a batshit crazy zealot with a god complex. Turns out he's basically god level because as it turns out Shunsui is carrying the anti god sword for his niece. A rather fast flashback explains aspects of their character and are revealed only now, just when we need it for a fight and not earlier when it could have been a nice world building chapter without it being so fucking rushed.

Kubo has great thematic style (naming, designs, all the shit he draws from), great powers, great visuals, given time the level of research and foreshadowing is great, but his execution of thing is often terrible and convenient for the current situation, rather than killing the character or having a match up that's not a perfect mirror image or perfect counter.

Anyone have any ideas how ichigos sisters are going to join to story or is that reserved for a spin off series.

So, this final arc is drawing more on Christian elements than any before. Is there going to be a reason for it? So this will explain why we've never seen hell itself, why it never gets worked in, why it's styled after medieval Jap architecture and feudal society, there is no other soul cycle because this one is dominate/won the war how ever long ago.
