Despite the situation he was in, however, I'm not justifying Griffith or anything like that... just clarifying that he didn't do what he did out of sheer depravity and maliciousness.

I like Grifith because I understand where his actions came from. He lost and risked countless lives before in order to reach his dream, a few hundred more did not mean anything.

Now how it happened? yeah, pretty hardcore stuff. But so what? In the world they live in, they could die in horrible ways that don't involve demons just for following Griffith.

He talked about true friends being able to sacrifice one another, like true friendship is only possible when both people are entirely self-sufficient and apart in some way. Also the references to people being separate from the world, being keys that move the world, etc.

Replying to myself to add on. The Berserkers armor is an extremely interesting plot device. The overall theme of the story is of growing responsibility and addressing life's problems instead of escaping into the comfort of blind, unencumbered rage and essentially escapism. The armor, the ultimate weapon, works directly against the main themes (and in the process reinforces them). Can Guts defeat Griffith without using the full power of the armor? Or will he be forced to choose between his friends (and his own life) or sacrifice himself to his rage in order to kill Griffith (throwing away all the story's progress). I'm sure Skellig will throw a few curveballs into this equation.

I think Berserk needs to end with Guts killing Griffith, but for the right reasons. One of Berserk's main themes is not letting revenge get the better of you, which Guts eventually got over after rescuing Casca from Albion and gathering the jRPG party, but the Beast is still there as a coagulation of those negative feelings. That mad dog, and not Griffith, is probably the biggest threat to Guts at the moment, as one fuck up to his psyche can lead to him losing everything he cherishes, so he should try and take care of that before considering going after Griffith.

In the manga it was a horrifying event that I wouldn't wish on anyone, but the films screwed up so much with the characterizations of the main characters that the rape ended up coming off as NTR instead. A shame, considering it killed off any chances of further animated adaptations of the series, but following fapping to it I don't feel the need to rage every time someone says Casca enjoyed it or whatever.

I think Casca's love for Griffith was unconditional. Having come out of nowhere to save her from a scummy noble like some sort of angel and giving her the opportunity to make something of herself, it's easy enough to see why she wouldn't want to abandon him at his lowest. However, that sort of love doesn't bar you from loving others, and people unfortunately overlook what made Casca so irreplaceable to Guts.

Actually, it took quite a bit of convincing for Griffith to go all the way.

Firstly, he was okay with the idea of living his life as a sentient vegetable so long as he lived with Casca or something. Lay down arms, the bullshit's over.

Then, when he decided to sacrifice, he wasn't 100% into it. He needed the Godhand to essentially trick him into believing it was okay to throw them all to the dogs. That basically means that, despite knowing he was a cripple, despite knowing he wouldn't get Casca or Guts, he still wasn't all for killing all these people. He was still uncomfortable with it. It's actually one of his biggest issues, since even before Guts joined.
