That logic fails at the point where you have to draw a line between stories and the character's actual powers, given the degrees of meta powers that some characters have. Any attempt to draw that line will fail.

There's no real explanation for why he can do what he does and there never will be. His character is defined by his tendency to win.

Remember what Reinhardt said. Strategy is a strength, and it wouldn't be right to take it away and say "I would win in a head-to-head engagement." It works the same way with this kind of thing. If there's a fictional character whose skill is to avoid losing situations, even unintentionally, then it wouldn't make sense to take that away, because then you're not actually talking about the character.
