I'm curious about Arima's relationship with Haise, early on in the series we saw them sparring on the tabletop and Arima complimented Haise in relatively short order after beating him.

It was very different from the supposed flashback scene of Haise fighting Arima- which I'm starting to suspect was a hallucination.

Dunno why it would be a hallucination. Ui's flashback from the 24th Ward shows Arima has no objections to repeatedly driling Ixa through Haise's skull. Couple that with manipulative use of Akira as his mentor or the implied brainwashing (during Takizawa fight) and it's clear that while Arima wants him to become a strong tool for CCG, he doesn't shy away from ugly means to achieve that.

I was saying that he would investigate his past without knowing how horrible it was. He also has a responsibility as an investigator to check anything he thinks might be linked to a ghoul and he knows he had known plenty of ghouls.

You can't really compare that to mimicking a person's personality who you think you've eaten. Those things aren't linked to any fear but they're just internalised fighting techniques. Hide being dead is one of the main reasons Kaneki rejects his memories, trivialities like that pale in comparison to that.

If Hide were still alive he wouldn't kill himself since even in his shit childhood Kaneki kept on living because Hide's presence supported him.
Kaneki wasn't killed by Arima because he listened to Hide's request. If the person you stayed alive for is dead your will to live will be something temporary and easily broken.
