The original manga was actually pretty trashy at times. It's a good thing to hold up as an icon of many things wrong with sci-fi as a genre in the 80's, especially because it toed the line between pornography and art fairly often.

Not that it's necessarily bad, but I don't think Oshii straying from the source material was necessarily an injustice. It was astute and to the point, and chose to prioritize the aesthetic, worldbuilding and plot over characterization. The marriage of speculative science fiction and noir that Oshii pulled off in that movie is a major reason that the franchise is still remembered today.
