How in the blue hell do you get "Sapphire" from "緑輝" (green brilliance).

Aren't sapphires almost always blue?

But usually they call green things blue (i.e. traffic lights), not the other way around.

Retards. Ao means green and blue but midori only means green.
They know her name makes no sense which is why 2ch and twitter are full of comments like this

True, but
Sapphire (Greek: σάπφειρος; sappheiros, 'blue stone',[2] which probably referred instead at the time to lapis lazuli) is a typically blue gemstone variety of the mineral corundum, an aluminium oxide

I want to complain about using soy to describe purple and using peach to describe pink but when we use the word orange I guess I can't. I wish I knew enough Japanese to google the etyomology of those words and found out how recently they've been used to describe colours.

Being open minded also means realizing things are allowed to be bad, like a complex system of characters being used in your language.
They were literally designed to be difficult to learn, for the purpose of limiting upward social mobility.

It's like you people don't even read.

OP isn't asserting that all sapphires are blue, only that when one says sapphire, "green" isn't the word that usually comes to mind, "blue" is.
>>
>>124750759
Ayaya has black hair
>>
I'm more confused about how those kanji can be read サファイア
>>
>>124761633
It's not supposed to be read as this, but the meaning. That's all the point of this discussion.

3 井上 銀河
Inoue Ginga (ginga as in Galaxy)

4 菊池 虎王
Kikuchi LionKing (no, srsly)

14 四谷 星の王子様
Yotsuya Hoshi no Oujisama (The Prince of the Star/Planet)

2 江口 花子
Eguchi Flower (yes, the reading would be something like Hanako, but it's Flower)

10 茅ヶ崎 じゅりあん (no, I don't know how to write this)
Chigasaki Julian (yes, Julian)

13 前谷 にゃあ
Maedani Nyaa

15 村田 箱女 (箱女 would be something like "female box")
Murata Pandora

16 守山 心
Moriyama Heart
Interesting.
>>
Her name is read sapphire, and the kanji says green brilliance. Then that means nothing but green sapphire. Why do you think the meanings of the reading and the kanji must be the same? We've already seen lots of this kind of stuff in anime/manga.
>>
>>124750673
I link between linguistics and world-perception is fascinating sometimes.

This is just retarded.

Blue is blue, green is green, they're quite different. There's some shades that overlap and you don't know what's what, but >>124750695
this chick's hair is fucking blue no matter how you look at it, why did the fuck so many languages manage to fuck that up?
>>
>>124757316
Japanese only has proper adjectivial forms (read: い adjectives) for the four primary colors. White (白い), black (黒い), red (赤い) and blue (青い). These are also the only ones with the 真っ prefix forms (meaning "pure/deep"; eg 真っ白, means "pure white"). Every other color is by analogy for the most part, with a noun+色 ("color"); eg, 灰色 ("ash-colored"), means gray, 桃色 ("peach blossom colored") means pink, etc. There's a couple of weird exceptions, like 緑 ("green") and 紫 ("violet") are の adjectives that don't have to take the 色 suffix; same with loan words like オレンジ ("orange"). But the language does contain these words; they're just in a more roundabout form than a simple adjective like the four primary colors.
>>
>>124762885
>10 茅ヶ崎 じゅりあん (no, I don't know how to write this)
樹璃庵
Fuck if I know what it means except for the first one which is "tree"
>>
>>124762885
Chigasaki Julian doesn't sound that weird.

>>124750396
I refuse to believe there are people on /a/ who don't understand how nip names work.
>>
>>124757120
They do, but they call it Bluepeace.
>>
After watching all the anime you guys should already know that some people in Japan like to assign names with pronunciations that previously do not exist, because they think it's cool.
Her parents are probably chuuni.
>>
>>124763800
They don't work is how they work. It's pretty fucking awful how they name their kids, no surprise that the birthrates are so low in Japan.
>>
It's probably why she wants people to call her Midori, which actually means green. She doesn't like to be called Saphire because it's ridiculous.
>>
>>124756554

http://dqname.jp/

I love this site.

黄熊 (Yellow Bear) - Puu
唯一神 (One True God) - Yuika [this one's mostly funny because Yuika's a real name and those kanji do individually make those sounds in names]
弥有二 - Mewtwo [His older sister was named 弥有, which is normally pronounced Miyuu, but his sister's named Mew]
女神 (Goddess) - Madoka
円環理 (Cycle Law) - Madoka
夜神(Night God)- Hades
歌姫(Songstress) - Miku
愛保 - Rabuho (Normally this name could be said Aiho, but they changed Ai with Rabu. Rabuho is also the abbreviation for Love Hotel)
光宙 (Light Universe) - Pikachuu

Look carefully at the kanji on the list. That's not 王子 but that actually is 玉子様(たまごさま).
