Are there any examples of manga/anime where the "edgy" character is done right? Or do they always turn shit?
"Edgy" IS equivalent to being considered shit, what with
mememind of /a/.
But "edgy characteristics" are like salt. In moderation it can enhance the taste, but too much and you puke.
His edge is only good with Judar sharpening it.
Also, does Killua count as "edgy"?
He was edgy as fuck in the first three volumes until pic related
Nah, Guts is pretty fucking edgy.
He turned out pretty okay at the end. still edge though.
This. His "kill the witch" arc was so fucking entertaining.
>Can a psychopath even be considered edgy
Killua is a cute character with great edgy moments
Thats as vague as saying without bad theres no good.
Not black and white bruh, you can have an edgy character but you have to do it right, or else it turns out unintentionally fucking hilarious.
I think its safe to say that all edgy characters just need to calm the fuck down.
I actually like current guts more than edgelord guts in the first few volumes, he was trying way to hard to not care for everything and it soon became boring.
He only crosses into evil territory when he starts killing those who are sent to stop him.
If he could have just cut that shit out for a while and picked it up later after he graduated, he could easily have gotten away with cleansing the wicked in his free time on an irregular basis.
He got greedy.
Are you retarded? He's always wanted to kill Kouen.
Once he started killing criminals from actual shit countries, like the U.S., I think he was doing some serious good.
He should have simply transcribed the names of our entire top tier of government and those who help run the parties and he'd have done us and the rest of the world a massive good.
Which is dumb as fuck. Gyokuen was the Empress of Kou and he killed her. He then took her place as Emperor. He took back what he thought was his. All Kouen is, is a general.
Then, because he's an idiot, he decides to try and fight a fellow Metal Vessel user even after being informed that it will only serve his enemies to do so.
Once you step outside of TV anime shounen jump adoptions you find everything improves.
The best action anime has overwhelmingly been OVAs and movies.
This is true even for the writing. Genocyber managed to be a hundred thousand times darker than any shounen jump anime ever (indeed it's the most violent anime ever made) and it still managed to become revenge killing seem awesome.
Basically, edgy characters are characters who live literally "on edge", meaning, they see the world as black/white in the most extreme way mostly due to a bad past.
So you take a character like that and and make it go through the story while interacting with the MC or doing whatever, and you expect said character to have some kind of development throughout the story.
When they have no development whatsoever and just remain in their own little edgy world without ever being influenced by others and eventually calm the fuck down, it gets tiresome, repetitive and unconvincing, and that character eventually ends up being annoying.
This is a very political opinion, which discards human life. It's like saying that you agree with the death penalty. Now, coming from a country that has banned executions in the 70's I have to say that I am really against it, thus making Light bad in my eyes even when killing criminals. Furthermore, killing world leaders and or corrupted politicians is not exactly something that would work. Most of those guys are controlled by others, mainly by international companies and the biggest majority of them are well hidden in the shadows. Still though, that would be taking lives and taking lives means murder in my eyes
Y-you take that back!
Jotaro isn't edgy. He's just very calm and calculated
I've always liked their rivalry because despite how bloody violent their fights get it looks like they're doing it more for fun.
Hiei was kinda edgy for valid reasons, but he turned out to be a pretty cool guy in the end.
You said it yourself, the system is rigged and most of the people playing face man are part of the puppet show.
The fact that they can be part of the puppet show and not try to expose it confirms that they deserve it.
This was the most dynamic, entertaining fucker in the whole show.
>The fact that they can be part of the puppet show and not try to expose it confirms that they deserve it.
So you are saying that people having different morals and ethics than you deserve to die?
You my friend are the edgiest of them all
His arc was short, didn't distract the MC too much, and after he saw the error of his ways, he immediately turned good and started helping out.
What about our good old Yuno?
She is pretty edgy. Pulling some crazy shit just to spent a bit more time with the boy she loved.
I'm not saying she was right, but she definitely did what she did in the name of love
Yuno did nothing wrong.
but yeah she had quite some edgy moments
>get away from my boyfriend you dirty slut etc
I like Lelouch better, he actually made the world a better place in the end. The CG universe and the Death Note universe are very different when it comes to evil/awful people, but still.
One Piece's Mihawk is done pretty well. Fights with a thing called Blacksword and uses a boat that looks like a coffin, but ist still fine with drinking some booze with an old friend.
Teaming up with yesterday's enemy to smash fate!
>Good edgy characters
You disappoint me, /a//
No I don't. Every type of opinion is subjectively formulated and formed. That especially counts for the edgy characters of every manga/anime. The vast majority of them consider what they do justified, because of subjective thinking. What makes them edgy is the subjective opinion of the majority which happens to be different by our edgy hero.
The only true edgy character in anything ever would have to be the Joker, in my opinion, but this is an anime board, so he does not exactly belong here
I remember reading some short plot synopsis that it was about a guy that brutally murders people in some sci-fi post apocalyptic world and it's not as awesome as it sounds, at all.
I ignored that and watched it and it was one of the longest 45 minutes in my entire life so dull it was.
I don't get why people would root for him, in the very beginning he killed an innocent man out of rage (the bait L put on TV).
That manifested he was just an egomaniac way early.
Do you agree with the concept of revolution?
Do you agree with the waging of past wars?
In a perfect world, everyone would die peacefully in their sleep from old age.
There is no such thing as a perfect world.
To say that death is more justified when enough people agree or when the ones doing it are doing it because those above them said it was just does not make it more or less just than an individual making such a value judgment.
I am not so sure... did she not commit into a way of life that dictated her to kill shitloads of people (and in the end her loved one), just to spend some more time with him? If that is not edgy then I don't know what is
I actually think that Lelouch was not THAT edgy. He definitely had his moments of making people commit suicide, but that was in a war for power and redemption.
So I guess he is justified? I don't even know myself. he just feels kinda more composed then anyone and he doesn't go all out killing best friends and children
Not so innocent. If I remember correctly that guy was a criminal with a death penalty. Nevertheless, i see your point. Personally I am against him and his megalomania makes him very annoying to my eyes :/
So what you have to consider is what is more valuable?
Your individual ethical value, or meta ethics of the majority.
People often waffle back and forth depending on the situation and how it is presented.
Yeah but that's the point, this thread is "edgy done right".
Thorfinn is edgy as a teenager but he's not full on crawling-in-my-skin mode.
He's young, reckless and stupid while driven by revenge. And then he grows up.
Oh! Sorry about that :/ Yeah, still though, both were master manipulators, but it seemed like Lelouch was a bit more justified that Light. Lelouch even had the past to give him reasons. Light was just operating on a false ethical system. I prefer Lelouch too
you can kill loads and loads of people without being edgy at all. she dindu nuffin wrung because muh universe. been a while since I watched, but I think I remember
>universe/god shits the bed
>ohshit ohshit ohshit
>can't into Yukki because fuck all
>no prob, new universe, kill other self and parents, kill kill kill, rinse and repeat
>just to spend time with Yukki
edge is all about attitude. being so, Yuno had quite some edgy moments, if not her overall self was plain edgy. it's not like she was into the whole mess because "oh boy I love causing suffering and seeing people die". that'd be edgy. she was more like a psycho, barely realizing what she did was... crude? whatever.
c18 on the other hand...
Actually right now I need a definition on edgy. What makes a character edgy? Is it his ethical standings, or the absence of them? Is a character that kills people for no reason edgier than the one with reason or not? I don't know man, I feel confused...
It's hard to go around that term because the way it is used e.g. in this thread is different than what the actual lexical definition of "edgy" is.
Basically edgy as 4chan tends to use it hasn't even been officially defined.
>thinking anyone is actually going to read all of that shit
Should we try and define it? Having a debate on a matter without knowing the meaning of the subject is just stupid. We should totally start a board that will define what and edgy anime character is.
>Faggots saying Hakuryuu is the best edgy character in magi
>Not based Sinbad
That really depends on what you mean as ''edgy''.
If you mean a character with little or no morals who can use really questionable means to achieve his/her goals and even enjoy it, being a bit of a sadist, then yes, numerous.
If you mean "crawling in my skin, these wounds won't heal" types who feel betrayed/hurt and have a tragic past that "no one can understand/relate to" so they isolate themselves or need to take revenge on the world because "muh pain", then no, these types are always shit.
this thread isn't going to go anywhere because most of /a/ is retarded and do not understand basic emotions
Edgy is the character that turns full 'the ends justify the means' and will kill any former friends to accomplish their goals
but /a/ will label someone who is just mad or wants revenge as THE EDGE
Still very wide. Some characters i dislike and are not genki I can't call edgy. Quite a lot of anime and manga have these quite characters that seem to always be depressed, and I totally hate those guys. Plus I totally prefer edgy characters. I like them because they make a more interesting story.
I think a good edgy character needs to retain some basis of morality in their personality. Something in-between outright evil and good guy moralfagging, but the only truly questionable thing about them is the methods they use in accomplishing their goal. The goal itself should be something that isn't easy for the MC to argue against.
Yeah Ladd is a good one. The thing I hate about edgy characters is that you can see the incoming character development from a mile away, I'd rather have genuinely psychotic motherfucker running around tearing shit up just for the hell of it than some guy who had a bad day and takes it out on the world
Meh, both of them only show up once every 50 episodes. Takasugi barely do anything aside for saying that he will destroy everything, while Kamui's only characterization is that he likes to fight.
I'm still mad that they are more popular than characters like Kondo or Madao.
The thing about 'psychotics' is unless they have a genuine physiological brain issue (which does not account for many), then they are the way they are because of life experience, the way they have learned to reason and how perceive the world.
When someone has been swept far enough in a given direction, it can be almost impossible to bring them back to center.
Edgy done right, you say?
Because it's not. I'm not even the guy you're responding to, and I think you're blowing things way out of proportion. Light, with all his failings, is portrayed fairly. We understand from the getgo he's a fucking psychopath. He's entertaining as fuck, watching him succeed AND watching him fail. You're not supposed to identify with him and support his cause, even if you are rooting for the guy. If anything you're supposed to root for the people trying to stop him. It'd only be edgy if the narrative was explicitly telling us, "Light is correct! And all these people deserve what they got!!!" But it's not.
I'll say it again, we understand from jump street Light. Is fucking. Crazy.
I would say you could lable a character edgy by the whole ends justify the means or kills his friends definition. Id say it comes more down to how complete a character is written. a one track one emotion character is where I feel you start getting into edge. like brooding and killing is labled edge the same way as light slice of life characters are labled moe
Also, the 'taking perverse pleasure' in being wicked or smiting your enemies is pretty fucking edge.
I've been in fights and had stupid issues with people, even when they get what's coming to them I don't actually take pleasure in it. If anything I feel even more shit that they got themselves fucked.
Thorfinn from Vinland Saga.
You know it's true.
>Light. Is fucking. Crazy.
I think that's just what people want to believe, I brought this up before but light is no different than a nation with a army using might to enforce its ideas. Sanity is a privilege only people who have someone 'crazy' to do the killing for them can enjoy.
He was being relentless pursued.
At first he had no enemies and he could focus on a moral crusade, but once they sought him out to stop his crusade, they became the enemy.
When you're being pursued you lose the greater perspective.
This is why people think to fight or flee when confronted by authority.
If it seeks to take away your freedom or stop your endeavor, no matter the reason, it becomes your personal enemy.
Fucking this. It's why Eren Jaeger from SnK is such an annoying faggot to this day and why Yuichiro Hyakuya from Owari no Seraph became pretty likable after he chilled the fuck out.
I don't know I would call Black Beard Edgy, I mean he has every single thing you call someone edgy for, but his demeanor and the way he presents himself is far from Edgy. He is highly charismatic, strong believer in destiny, extremely loyal to his crew.
This guy was so edgy he got vash the fucking stampede to kill him, and vash would rather get on his knees and act like a dog while his enemies pissed on him than kill.
Where would Truza be on the edge-o-meter?
Say what you want but vegeta has always been an immensely powerful fighter, even as a kid he could beat like 90% of anime protags, he just has the misfortune of siding with goku who has beef with the craziest motherfuckers in the galaxy.
110/10 my sides have left the Universe.
Kerry failed at damn near everything save for Iri and Ilya and he lost them due to him going maxium overedge with his assblastedly retarded dream.
I'm stunned Shirou didnt end up even more fucked up than he did with an assclown like Kerry raising him.
Being fair, Punisher 2099 was a satire, but godammit if he wasnt cool.
Any random character in AgK. And this guy of course.
There's one airing right now.
>Are there any examples of manga/anime where the "edgy" character is done right?
>they see the world as black/white in the most extreme way
That's the best way to see the world though. Attempts to introduce shades of grey into the picture strike me as half-baked obfuscations and distractions. These days, everybody harps on about there being nuances and subtleties that need to be considered which cannot be easily divided into categories of good and evil. But one simply needs a word to describe the vermin of this world and "evil" this is the best negative superlative that we possess.
Egdy: At the forefront of a trend.
The trend in this case is "darkness"-attitude. If a character expresses the "dark attitude" trait to the avant garde, where they are attempting to be uniquely or extremely "dark attitude", then that character is "edgy". They are forefronting what it means to have a "dark attitude and personality".
By this logic, anything "off-white" can be categorized and dealt with as evil. The black/white dichotomy is only useful for reducing cognitive effort. It doesn't produce the most accurate models of reality nor produce a high rate of ethical/moral decisions.
Jotaro is edgy. It the traditional sense of the word, like sonic .
Moralfag. An edgelord will act retarded in one or two posts. A moralfag will try and get in arguments with every poster over their gripe and 99% can not be reasoned with.
I think both extremes are terrible, I hate moralfags who preach every 5 seconds about how killing is bad and are conveniently written to never have to get there hands dirty, and I hate edges who act like dicks because they had a rough childhood or some shit.
Characters like Guts and Kenshiro are perfect because they don't glorify death and killing but will fuck a nigga up in a heartbeat!
