It's been a while since I've seen the second movie, but I do remember it being a lot darker. Maybe more somber, that's a better word.

The genius kicker from Anno is that everyone still moved on with their lives in one way or another, yet everyone in the main cast still looks the same.

Rei is your same stoic calm girl you know but she's even more wrong.
Kaworu is still the same but he gets blown up.
Misato became an ugly hag who took more command and seems to be a bitch.

Not a single person with any of those characters as waifu would have liked the change.
