Give me one reason why this anime is not a 10/10. (protip: you can't)

>inb4 fgts saying animation is bad when it is actually a good example of minimalism and unique art
>>
It looks like shit.
>>
It's praised in Japan.
>>
Extremely boring ping-pong matches, with far too much focus on OTT cinematography and the completely irrelevant thoughts of the characters rather than showing any kind of strategy.
>>
>>122936577
Because it's a 9/10.
>>
>>122936633
I bet you are one of those idiots who think KnB and Diamond No Ace are good examples of sport anime. It looks to me like you missed the whole point of the entire show. It is not about the sport, it is rather about the characters and how each of them sends a message to the audience.
>>
>>122936577
I give it an 8
>>
Did this show have no budget or what? I hear people say it's style, but the lines are just so fucking jagged for no reason.

Because 10/10 are only supposed to be reserved to an anime with zero flaws, and I don't think such a thing has been made yet. I give this show a 9.1 though.
>>
>>122936712
>implying you shouldn't kill yourself
>>
it kind of just rambled along and then ended, it didnt have much of a message.
just nitpicking though. the characters alone made it well above average.
>>
>>122936712
Can't you see the word minimalism there you fucking retard?
>>
It is one of the few times where an anime adaptation deviated from the manga and made a couple of changes which I ended up liking more than the original. It is definitely a 10/10.
>>
8/10

If anyone legit thinks it's a masterpiece, I suggest watching more anime. Not even Yuasa's better works deserve a 10.
>>
>>122936656
Shut the fuck up. I've heard that defense more times than I can hazard a guess to. This show is shallow in every way.
>>
>>122937147
What anime would you give a 10/10?
>>
>>122937147
>If anyone legit has a differing opinion, I suggest watching more anime. Not even Yuasa's better works deserve a 10.
>>
>>122937147
I think some of Yuasa's better works are 10/10. Some are 5/10, though. and Ping Pong wasn't even that great. For some reason I think people think so highly of it because it has different artstyle. It it had a more generic style I bet no one would give that much of a shit about it.
>>
>>122937314
I like Yuasa, but 9 is about as high as I'd go for him, and that's only reserved for Mind Game. 8 already denotes excellence for me, and that's what I'd give Ping Pong, though I prefer the manga over the anime.
>>
>>122937314
>giving 10/10's away to everything like a cheap whore

IGN reviewer pls go.
>>
>>122937314
A generic art style wouldn't change great writing and directing.
>>
>>122937381
Nah, there's a few anime that deserve that rating in my opinion and I'm a big Yuasa fan. Mind Game and Tatami deserve that in my opinion, but nothing else from his works

>>122937394
Sure but you can't compare seeing a moeblob cry with huge streams of tears down her face next something that looks a little more realistic
>>
>>122936577
It's not as exciting as true masterpieces usually are.
It's 8/10 material.
>>
>>122937433
>not wanting a moeblob Ping Pong
>>
>>122937167
To call it a defence reveals your presumption that a sports anime has an obligation to focus on the sport and to fail to do that is akin to failing as a work. Ping Pong affords greater focus to its characters and uses the sport as a platform for the interaction between these characters. To say that this is a flaw is telling of your presumptions about the show that skew your interpretation. You don't see if for what it is and instead you see it for a failure of what you expected it to be.
>>
>>122937188

Only LOGH so far. It's a rarity to see an anime that deserves even a nine, even LOGH has its noticeable flaws.

>>122937354
>9 is about as high as I'd go for him, and that's only reserved for Mind Game.

I would also go with Tatami there, personal opinion. Kaiba, not too sure, the first half fuels my fond memories of it.
>>
>>122937433
Eh, Tatami and Ping Pong are about the same for me.

Mind Game > Tatami = Ping Pong > Kemonozume > Kaiba. Not gonna bother listing his other misc. works.
>>
>>122937483
10/10 is not supposed to be perfection, it's a score given to the X% best anime. 3% is usually considered a good number.
It's utterly stupid to have a rating scale when you just refuse to use most of it.
>>
>>122936577
>Doesn't know the difference between animation & art

>10/10 is not supposed to be perfection

>10/10 is not supposed to be perfection, it's a score given to the X% best anime.

I actually covered that, you share no new information here.

>3% is usually considered a good number.

Had it there before reevaluating a couple of things. Who cares what percentage people consider a good number? That depends on how much you've actually seen in total.
>>
>>122937595
It's just common sense. If 10/10 was perfection, every anime would be 0/10, cause nothing human-made could even come close.

So scores should be relative to the worst and best anime that exist, which mark the two ends of the scale.
The rest of the scores should be weighted so that the ratings of all existing anime describe a Gauss curve (with the maximum in the center of the scale, obviously).
>>
>>122937314
you're completely missing the point. Some people find it disgusting. ok
Some people find it charming. I, personally like the colouring. It's refreshing, interesting to look at and contributes to the atmosphere of the show.

Regardless you're missing the point. How deluded do you have to believe anyone, even on /a/, would praise a show so highly solely on something so shallow as its cover?
>>
>>122937314
Yuasa's only 5/10 is that Adventure Time episode, everything else is 8+ except maybe Kick-Heart which might be a bit lower

It was very good, without a doubt the best show of 2014 when everything else is so mediocre it just makes you appreciate something that's at least good way more than usual. However, it isn't a masterpiece but still a thrilling watch with a great cast of characters. 8.5/10.

Poor story/character development. China man was #1 wasted story potential. Art style was grotesque, however, the animation was incredible, along with OST. At best 9/10, realistically, 8/10.
>>
Show jumped the shark when Peco defeated Kong, Kazama and Smile with a broke knee

If I wanted to make a predictable, unoriginal show for hipsters about terribly drawn chinks playing gay tennis for people too unathletic to run, I wouldn't because it would be SHIT.

If Yuasa animated his own defecations a substantial portion of /a/ would circlejerk over it.
>>
The show was about friendships, the life of a competitive sport player and ping pong. The OST was amazing.

It's an American sports movie with Japanese art. It's good, the OST is especially praiseworthy (and the ED is GOAT), and the animation is cool, but ultimately it's not any kind of masterpiece. Just watch any American sports story and you'll see that this is exactly the same.

It's a solid 7 or 8/10.

>>
>>122955771
how do you know that's not correct?
>>
>>122955771

>if you weren't born with talent you're not getting anywhere, even if you work yourself to death

The thing is, this is actually true re: some, but not all professions. This is actually true re: individual sports, specifically as opposed to team sports. You're never going to be the world champion of an individual sport without talent, but through hard work you can definitely rise to the top of a team sport with underwhelming talent. An example who comes to mind is the recently retired Steve Nash. Usually the littlest dude on the court, usually the slowest dude on the court, usually the weakest dude on the court in terms of physical strength. Two-time MVP.

Well shit, now that I think about it, I guess the ultimate example is Joe Montana. Weak arm. At the quarterback position. Widely considered the greatest QB in the history of the sport.

You'll never see someone with a low IQ be the world chess champion.
