Toriyama was a great cartoonist before he decided to stop caring about putting effort into his art (he admitted it himself)

Was there really no separation between the two? As an incredibly casual observer, Z seems where they really went from fun adventure series to serious constant power level battles where everyone could fly and destroy planets.
