>>

At the time it did honestly. A good example of this is Zeta Gundam (late 80s detailed artwork but shit animation) and Gundam F91 (early 90s, some of the artwork is not as detailed but the animation is wonderfully fluid). Sadly some time afterwards studios seemed to tend to the worst of both worlds.

Why is anime such a superior medium?
>>
>>121543097
I actually agree with this guy. but the reason why anime doesn't look very as good as it did is because there's less money to spend on animation. different times, different ways to use money.

it really makes me mad when people say the old art styles look bad because they're so used to the new ones.
>>
>>121541488
I don't see a differnce.
>>
>>121544480
Because the cartoons are for children stigma is less prevalent outside of the west.
>>
>>121544491
Actually anime today doesn't use 80s OVA levels of shading because they want to focus on the animation. Most of the examples Otaking posted were from moneyshots, highly detailed stills that didn't move, or had very little movement.

Anime is still considered for nerds and losers in Japan. But there's just a market for that niche over there. Tell anyone in Japan that you watch any anime that isn't ghibli or primetime stuff then they're going to judge you just as much as most people in the west would.
>>
>>121544704

It's an economic thing, right?

In the 80's japan was doing gang-busters and their economy was booming, everyone was happy as fuck and probably still having a bunch of kids too. Then the 90's went to shit, the Japs even call it "The Lost Decade" or something like that because they were hit with a terrible economic crisis that effected most of south-east Asia.

So I assume there was lots of money to be thrown around in the '80s and in the '90s everyone was depressed and poor instead.

It's kind of like watching the end of an era.

stuff like dr katz, south park, even early simpsons convinced people that to be funny on TV and get an audience, it wasn't important to have good drawings. these type of shows are constantly appearing.
and you have to be critical of anime to some degree, that even though the art is nice, there's hardly any experimentation, while the west is the opposite. its mostly experimentation with little regard for quality.

Not that I disagree with your attempted point of western animation, in general, being shittier than anime - but that's a poor image to make the argument with.

Only one of the "anime" examples is a television series, the rest are movies or OVAs which have significantly higher budgets and timeframes to work with.

None of the "western" examples are movies/specials.

Do any of you have trouble getting into older anime? I seem to have several problems with what I've seen so far. First of all, to me a big problem is the lack of good adult-oriented series. This doesn't even mean R-rated series, just ones aimed at adults (like Mushishi is seinen but is rated 13+). The are very few series like this, so it's mainly OVAs and films, which are incredibly gory and edgy most of the time, I mean stuff like genocyber, cyber city Oedo, wicked city were just a drag to watch when you compare them to newer stuff. There are some more adult oriented series like captain harlock or fist of the north star, but those are rather cheesy and really uneven. I must admit, some mecha series stand out here, but you usually have to wait for half the series to pass so it abandons the quirky humor and characterization (gundam, patlabor).

The children series are a whole different matter, I remember I watched many of them on public tv like cities of gold, treasure island, moomins and so on. But when I watched other stuff which didn't hold nostalgic value to me it usually turned out to be rather mediocre.

Overall there are a few things worth note, I mean ghibli movies (Nausicaa especially), Patlabor movies, a few Gundam series, Votoms or Logh. But I can easily understand that people can find more stuff to enjoy from the first half o the 00s and on wards.

tl;dr version: Post 2000 anime is better than pre 2000 anime.

There may be some quality differences.

But you may also be suffering from perception bias.

You simply know fewer pre-2000 shows, and those you know are what was mostly popularized in the west as kid's shows. And with post-2000 shows you're ignoring all the shit that airs each season because with torrents and season preview charts we have a very easy time to pick up everything that remotely matches our interests and ignore the rest.

Most western cartoons have big budgets, but they don't expend it only in animation, voices and marketing take a big part of the budget too, specially popular cartoons like adventure time, regular show, gravity falls etc.
Also cartoons looks worse because they sacrifice detail over fluidity, tv anime most of the time are composed of still scenes of characters talking, in cartoons characters never stop moving and making gestures.

Y'know, I've been wondering this for a little while now; I remember Komeiji from quite some time ago as an obnoxious tripfag, but I took a break from 4chan somewhere around 2010 and came back a couple years later to see the pizza-faced bastard is on a fucking banner now. Did something in particular happen or was he just a notoriously autistic waifufag?
>>
>>121547254
Oh shit, I didn't know saucenao could do that.

Thanks bud, now I have something to watch tonight. Anyone have a chart for 80s ovas they could drop so I can mass torrent them?

Notoriously autistic tripfag and waifufag. Got personally offended if someone said that Azusa wasn't the best K-On and always swooped into threads to defend K-On or Moé. This of course lead to people baiting him and he took it every single time, it got to the point where many people who hated K-On would often just shittalk it in a K-On thread just so he'd show up and ruin the thread for everyone.

2010 was a shit year for /a/ in general with all the accel spam.

The fact that one person uses imgur doesn't make this reddit shit okay to post here.

Guess I picked a good time to duck out then, thanks for the explanation. I do remember the spammer though, at first he was shitposting jumbled up letters then moved on to random non-sequiturs, I think. Dark times those were.
About when did Komeiji stop posting? Did he get bullied too hard?

Can't believe it's been 5 years since accelspam. Time spent really meshes into one experience here.

I wish I could tell ya for certain, I had to duck out of /a/ for a while myself. But I assume that he finally had enough and left. K-Ons thread quality has increased 2000% ever since he departed.

>>121548216
I remember when he got betrayed by the guy who maintained his spam program, it was just like my japanese NTR doujins. Also his overly defensive nature that came up when someone called him autistic was hilarious.

>>121548239
it's puffy. fluffy vulva sounds more like something you would find on a catgirl

>giving a shit about what year things came out and 'shading' rather than wanting to look for quality stuff

The only 'heavy shading' was only in OVAs, which could construct their budgets better. Other than that, most things looked like pic related, kind of flat.

Interestingly, Japanese traditionally used flat color almost exclusively - so even if this was accurate (it isn't) it would represent an acquiescence to Western artistic sensibilities, not the other way around
>>
>>121546153

It's true. The "animation" part of anime is not its strong suit. It uses less frames - that's part of why its so much cheaper to produce.
>>
>>121548727
>It uses less frames
Fight/chase/other rapid motion scenes often are at full 24fps, at least in shows with a decent budget. Which is the same framerate as used by disney movies.
>>
>>121549121
>Fight/chase/other rapid motion scenes
Of which this movie has none.
>often are at full 24fps,
"often". You mean like in Black Rock Shooter?
I have trouble thinking of other TV shows coming with that kind of FPS during action sequences.

Yeah, I guess I was wrong there. But fate ubw and sidonia come to mind, those had fight scenes in 24fps
>>
>>121549197
TTGL, PSG, and KLK all had tons of 24fps fight scenes. Its part of how Gainax/Trigger is saving anime. They aren't afraid to spend money to produce a superior product.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
