I have the exact opposite sentiment. Prisma Ilya is a glorified fanfic, yes, but I think the author legitimately wanted to build off of Fate, so not mainly for milking. Carnival Phantasm is just fantastic, probably one of the best and most hilarious things that TM has put out.

Extra is okay, but the TM actually admitted that Nero was a Saber-clone to attract Saberfags and it just came at a rather late date as well. Almost 6 years after F/SN, while Prisma was about 3 years. Therefore, this suggests that F/E had a much larger incentive to make money off of Fate than the other franchises that you said.

No, most of Carnival Phantasm's humor comes from its making jokes of TM. You can still enjoy without having gotten into TM, but you just won't appreciate it nearly as much as if you did.

I've been going through Zero and UBW episode by episode, and people I think really have some rose tinted glasses for Zero.

The first three episodes of Zero are almost pure build up and exposition. There isn't any real action at all, and if you knew about the basic stuff regarding the grail war, as you probably should since this is a prequel, lots of the content in these parts is basically just retreading of info from the Fate route.

Looking at UBW as well, I'm not really understanding some of the complaints. People say it's slow, but it gets to the action straight up at episode 0, and in terms of music and sound, another complaint I'm hearing, it's roughly on the same level as Zero. I think people who complain about the soundtrack aren't looking at the way the two shows used it in context, plus Zero has the benefit of actually already having its CDs as reference points.

I think the problem, or difference rather, with UBW's OST is that it's just not as thematic as Zero's. Call Kajiura a one-trick-pony all you wish, but her compositions were at least very melodic and memorable, regardless of quality. Besides, her orchestral latin chants were really fitting to the atmosphere. UBW just doesn't seem to make much of an impact, therefore the complaints.

I don'tthink this is true at all. Kajiura's score was centered around mostly a single motif, but if you actually listen to UBW's soundtrack, it's extremely thematic. Every character has a theme and motif, and it's not just the same exact song playing either. There's a new version every time.

That's another thing about Zero compared to UBW. Zero reused music constantly, with the exception of Kajiura's tracks, Fukasawa's music seems to be entirely original for each episode.

UBW does have a main theme, it plays a lot during Shirou's scenes, but also when general heroic stuff happens. There's also an ominous more ambient version that plays during creepier or darker scenes. I don't think it's as good as the one Kajiura wrote for Zero, but I don't really think it has to, since the entire soundtrack isn't centered around it.

Like, if you listen to Zero's music, Kajiura slips in that theme in most of the tracks, while Fukasawa tends to write a theme for character x, and then whenever a scene happens with that character happens, a version of that melody plays.

With the VN music, I don't know it's a toss up. I get that people want to hear it, but you'd also have the people who'd say it's not as good as the original, so you can't really please everyone. Fukasawa just decided to try and strike out with his own original stuff. I mean I think he was the one who remastered the 2012 soundtrack for the Vita version, so I could understand him being tired of working with those tracks.

For the most part, the anime does stay very close to the essence of the novels. A large majority of the differences come from how the anime portrays the characterization; the novels uses the third-person narration heavily to describe the thought processes of each character. The anime does not take this route. Case in point, episode 17 "The Eighth Contract":

The entire meeting between Kirei and Tokiomi to inform of Risei's death is completely anime-original. In the novels, the narrator goes to great lengths to describe just how much of an impact this death on Tokiomi's confidence. Tokiomi is actually an average magus given prominence not due to his talent but for his hard work and effort (a detail omitted from this episode). He has become who he is due to how he planned out his life to become the ideal magus, so naturally his plan coming apart bit by bit would shake him quite a bit. Afterwards, Gilgamesh probing into Kirei's thoughts about the matter condenses a relatively long narrative about Kirei's personal feelings about how his life has turned out thus far (which includes a flashback to his recently deceased wife that was mentioned in the very beginning of the story) into approximately 30 seconds of dialogue. The scene that this narrative takes place, when Kirei first discovers Risei's body, is not even alluded to in the anime. This is probably because Kirei actually sheds tears for his father, not out of sadness, but due to how he wasn't the one to actually kill him. Naturally, this is cut out of the anime since the visual direction has Kirei strictly being completely emotionless until those last moments. Instead, the anime has Gilgamesh cut right into the heart of the matter.
