I heard the emperor of Japan loves anime espiacialy Snk and he's 81. The former king of Saudi Arabia said his favorite foreign film was the death note live action movie, I believe he was 90
>>
>>121006473
That's a vague question OP. Do you mean oldest by the person who has been a fan of anime the longest or do you mean oldest by age?
>>
I know people over 30 who watch anime so I guess there are always a few fans who are up to 40 years old. I think there are barely any watchers among the pre-videogame generations though, like people around 50 upwards. They are just not used to newer media and anime fans are always just a very small part of a mass so it's even less if the mass is barely using computers and internet in the first place.
I wouldn't wonder if there were a bunch of 55 year olds on /a/ though.

I know that people were subbing crappy VHS back in the 80's-90's. Most of those people who were at the forefront of subbing back then are probably really old or dead now. I have family in their 50's who watch anime too but have pretty shit taste. I myself have been watching anime for somewhere around 20+ years now, started watching in my adolescence. Most of my friends with shit taste tend to be in their 40's and up for some reason and a lot of them rosey nostalgia glasses on for everything made before the turn of the century. I have some younger cousins into anime and they seem to like haremshit which I guess is to be expected of lonely teens.

Also there are tons of older people on here. A friend of mine posts on another board here and he's like 55. He doesn't watch anime or post on an anime themed board so I don't know how he even found his way here. There was also some kids dad tripfagging on /o/. There were pics of him at some /o/ meeting too and he was fat and redneck looking. Not the type of old dude you'd expect to hangout with kids, looked more like a molester. Not sure if he still posts because I filter all tripfags there.

>>
>>121013029

Yep, 31, employed in a respectable, salaried job that puts me in a position of respect in my local community.

And still a fat, single virgin neckbeard who has to hide his powerlevel and worry about his spaghetti spilling everywhere at work conferences constantly.

I still don't know how to answer younger coworkers when they ask what my hobbies are, or what kind of TV or movies I watch, because I haven't watched American TV or movies in a few years.
>>
>>121015706
No be happy with what we have. There were so many shows that I watched random episodes of because that's all I could find the VHS tapes of. Within the last few years I have been able to download and watch shows where I never thought there would be a way for me to ever watch them from beginning to end. I didn't get to live that whole university thing either since I just happened to know a lot of older folks at a young age who gave me the hookups.

How does that even happen? I'm in my thirties and I'm fine. Maybe it's because I'm asian and my group of friends sticks to other asians but we are all normal people with good jobs, families, good social life, etc etc. Every time a white person tries to get into our group they act are usually fedora neckbeard brony virgins who end up not fitting in with us as it's hard to relate to someone who still lives with his parents, spouts memes, and complains about >tfw no gf.

Yeah you're right for the most part. To this day though, when buyfagging or looking for hidden gem anime, I'll see a shit quality image for ants or whatever of an anime or old merch and because I know so little and have very limited access to it I want to know even more even though it's probably not all too good.

It's a "it's the journey that matters" kind of thing, you know? Totally different perspective on your end, but it is pretty sweet that you can get like 95% of any anime you could possibly want at a click. I was only born in early 93', but I remember anime outside of what was on TV still being fairly scarce to me. I was stuck with hour limited dialup until I was in high school so even watching video online was hard for me. Nowhere near as extreme as the scene you came from but I can appreciate what we have now compared to then. It's just sometimes I still yearn for the hunt for any scrap of info I could get about something I can't easily know about. sage for blogshit.

>>121016010

It's not like I actually have a neckbeard or wear fedoras. Most 30 year olds aren't in that group, by virtue of age. If you hit 30 and are still a virgin, you generally stop complaining about no girlfriends and deal with the fact that you're gonna be single your whole life. Or at least, that's how it happened to me. I work in a field with very few single women, virtually no interaction with other adults during the workday, and very little free time, so yeah.

But I'm fat, and growing up fat has made me awkward and nervous and super self-conscious. That's just how it is.

I don't expect Asians to understand because you guys have an entirely different regional and ethnic culture from Tex-Mexicans.

Fuck. Me too. Get home from (to my parents house) and just watch anime while I wait for dinner. 10 years later now it's get home from work, lift for gains, cook dinner, random chores, get ready for work the next day, watch 1 anime episode, hopefully get to spank the gf, and fall asleep. I miss the simplicity of youth.

It is what it is. Some people are just not as socially adept as others.

I'm at least capable enough to be a teacher. It's mostly just the fact that I don't get to have adult relationships and that most of my days go by without more than half an hour of interaction with other adults, due to living in a rural area.

Hell, I don't even have non-online friends anymore, because all my friends moved to various cities for jobs.

As a 23-year-old in a similar position (who will still be in the same position in 8 years), ez. For hobbies, take up a few mainstream hobbies, dabble in them enough to know what you're talking about, and then drop. My state is highly pro-gun, so I shoot, and I've lurked /k/ for a while, so I can spout off about all kinds of stuff, especially slavshit. I work IT, so vidya is acceptable, and there are a few wizards with power levels similar to my own, with whom I can discuss anime. Even the normalfags (relatively speaking) in the company play Magic: The Gathering.

For movies and TV, just look at Rotten Tomatoes now and then for good recent releases, and spend an evening watching one or two of the best-rated mainstream movies. For shows, watch something like Game of Thrones - it's become a huge hit. Find the mainstream stuff that you can still sorta enjoy, and at least read synopses, so you can chat about it a bit. Casually follow a single sports team.

We really ought to throw together a guide to surviving around normalfags. Something like The Well Cultured Anonymous, except up-to-date, and geared towards neckbeards instead of /b/tards.
>>
>>121017251
I'm not going to force myself to enjoy normalfag hobbies just to make friends with people that I don't have anything in common with. What a fake and unhappy way to live.
>>

Different Asian here who grew up in Bay Area and I just wanted to say I worry about the same stuff you do. Pretty sure it's just the individual.

I can't hang up anything I want at my own place because I'm afraid visitors will see them, however rare they are. I also accepted I'll never find a gf but I even stopped caring years before that.
I just want a good job so I can afford more of my hobbies.

Why are you afraid of people finding out that you like anime? It's literally just another way of telling a story. You shouldn't be ashamed of something you enjoy.
>>

I've been noticing this more with males is that they graduate college and get a good job but don't get married or have kids so that they can enjoy their hobbies. I'm in that boat and I work with many guys my age in my field who are barely staying afloat trying to support a family on one income with a stay at home mom. Meanwhile you see the least financially successful people in life pop out many kids and us working stiffs pay their welfare.

Oh well I'm enjoying my expensive hobbies and high great quality of life.

48 year old here, been enjoying anime and manga since the 80's. I remember trying to go to a convention once in the early 90's when the conventions were few and far between. Haven't ever been and don't think I will ever bee able to at this point without feeling too self conscious about the age gap.

/a/'s average age is around 24 and has been for a while. There are plenty of 30+ and a lower percentage of teenagers than most of the other boards. Even as we get a bunch of younger retards, the rest of us get a year older every year and this place is notoriously hard to leave.
>>
>>121017651

Nah, if anything people will think you are cool as shit. I had a really nice, lengthy chat about anime with a middle age business woman at the last con I went to. She had just gotten off of work and drove straight to the con. She really stood out since she was so formally dressed, but everyone was pretty chill about it.

If you still are nervous, just pose as a parent looking for their lost kid or something. Families at cons are usually pretty cute.

Don't think about this too much. Look for the next biggest con you are able to go to without spending several days of driving.

You should by NOW buying your tickets and reserve your place to stay the night.

If you like photographing and own a cam, take it with you. You will only need some pocket money and off you go.

You will enjoy so many things there and meet so many nice people, trust me there is such an unexpected big amount of people in your age range. Just trust this anon here. You will be respected and everyone is so chill and nice.

If I could describe a big con it would be something like some hippie kind of thing. Everyone just enjoys and no one judges. Please just do it!

I couldn't relate to them then so I feel no different about them now.

People would want to because they want to fall in line with what they believe society is telling them. It's moreso seen that being an adult is being responsible. But somewhere along the line, the ability to have fun was considered irresponsible.
Sad, really, when the only way "responsible" people can have fun is if they TRY.

Has your taste changed over the years?

I used to love haremshit when I started but as time went by I started spotting all the cliches and ignored them entirely. I mean, I still watch them from time to time but I no longer enjoy them the way I used to.
>>
>>121021947

>“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” ~ CS Lewis

People "grow up" because it makes it easier to call themselves good people without having to actually think about what they do, why they do it and whether or not any of it is actually good. They work hard, but only within the lines they know of. Fuck any introspection they might have had, if they can get paid and have kids then according to society they're automatically good people. Lately though, due to the lack of available jobs, it's become harder for people to validate themselves that way.

>>121022007
Of course. I used to watch action shows exclusively. I loved battle shounens. And then I started seeing how dumb they were, but I still watched and read them as a guilty pleasure. Then eventually they just became boring to me.

Now I mostly watch SoL, romance, harems and comedies. I've come to see that virtually all anime is nothing but cliches heaped on cliches, so stories hold pretty much no interest to me now. I rarely see an anime these days that makes me interested in its story. Though I do love Cross Ange for reasons besides the gratuitous fan service (although that's why I picked it up in the first place). Just goes to show that Fukuda understands his audience. Draw in the jaded otaku with boobs and butts, then drop amazing world building and intrigue on them.

At any rate, years of watching anime has convinced me that execution is far more important than content. How the story is told is infinitely more important to an anime's quality than what story is told. Most SoL and school romances follow extremely predictable patterns, yet they vary widely in quality depending on how well they are executed. Harems though, mostly tend to be on the low end of the quality spectrum, but I still find them more enjoyable to watch than your average battle show. Like with Seven Deadly Sins. I find myself skipping through the overly-long and samey fight scenes just to get to the much more entertaining character interactions between them.

Better than mine. She hates the Japanese and considers them inhuman scum because of how they treated our soldiers as POWs in WW2.

Doesn't matter my arguments that she's putting the sins of the father upon the son, or that most of the Japanese responsible for that are dead, or that we treated Confederates even worse during the Civil War. Doesn't matter, she thinks they're irredeemable.

I feel like most people start with something like DBZ or Nurutu and reach a door. If you open it and get immersed in the culture then your tastes branch out and change. If you don't, you stay a normie and don't watch anything but the popular battle shows.

I really hope there are a lot of older anons in here. It more than likely is just some cunt fucking with everyone in the thread, but I can dream. >>121023244
Yep, production values help too. Things like good sound editing, quality voice work, and a nice OST will keep me watching, doubly so if they create an enjoyable atmosphere that makes the show easy to watch. A good SoL show puts a lot of effort into those areas I mentioned, they try to create a very relaxed, comfy atmosphere so that the episode just seems to fly by.

By contrast, I find Aldnoah Zero hard to watch. I can't really say why. The music isn't bad per se, the animation isn't terrible, but all of it together just makes it unpleasant to watch.

I was saved from becoming a normie because when I was in high school (the year the nurutu anime started), my niggaboo friend told me about the concept of torrent.

Oldschool bittorrent, where you had to have a separate instance of the program open for each individual torrent. And downloading a single episode of nurutu took an hour. Still, that turned me from being an Adult Swim dub-only guy into someone that downloaded each week the shows he wanted to watch.

I first started with ecchi. I was a teenager and I fapped a lot.

Then I watched Shounen. Bleach and Naruto were the big ones. I still have fond memories of marathoning the first 50 or so episodes of Bleach. This was the first time I came to /a/, expecting lots of discussion for them. I was quite surprised when I didn't recognize any anime from the threads. I saw a bunch of thread for Lucky Star(this was when it was airing). So I decided to try it out. I thought it was awful.

After that I watched a lot of shows. Mostly entry level and some on the recommendation charts. Then I started watching seasonal shows for the first time on /a/ in 2011 with Mawaru Penguindrum.

Now in 2015, I'm having trouble enjoying any shows. The last show I really enjoyed was Silver Spoon. Yet I keep watching shit anime and I keep coming to /a/ to complain.

I remember buying bootleg Serial Experiments Lain VHS tapes from a flea market when I was younger.

Looking back, they must have been translated to Chinese and then to English. The fansubbing scene back then must have been amazingly interesting.

Pretty much. I used to prefer to marathon shows, but /a/ only discussed airing shows so I decided to try watching them. And now I spend more time on /a/ than actually watching anime.

Me too i become hard watching anime with school children. Nothing to be ashamed of

>I spend more time on /a/ than actually watching anime.
So does everyone else here.

The first one I torrented was Escaflowne movie. I got.

Same thing for me. Instead of powering through though, I switched a lot of my time to manga. Now I have around 200 ongoing manga that I'm reading. I still watch a couple of shows a season, but I hardly work on my backlog anymore unfortunately.

I felt dirty and ashamed when I first started fapping to anime girls.

>I switched a lot of my time to manga
You made the right choice.

7chan is garbage and 420chan deleted their /a/ because their users couldn't handle watching Lucky Star. Never been to 711chan so I don't know what's up with that. There are a few scattered /a/-based imageboards but they're usually not very good. Wizardchan would probably be okay but it's too fucking depressing.

All in all, /a/ is pretty fucking great.

I know that feel. I just slowed down with my anime watching. I decided to pick up old, long anime and slowly watch those. I also decided to play more vidya since I've been neglecting it in favor of anime. Just cycle your hobbies so you don't get bored. Once I'm burned out of playing grand strategy games, I'll go back to reading and then cycle back to anime.

Switching to manga is like discovering anime all over again. There are so many series that I love that don't have adaptations and I can marathon the shit out of an entire work faster than an anime.
>>
>>121024063
>I switched a lot of my time to manga
That's actually what I'm starting to do. I've been downloading a bunch of series. It's just easier to get through than anime.

What about that new chan everyone's up their own asses about lately? Apparently it's so bad that I can't even use the slang for it without my post being called spam.

Only 6 figs of your waifu? Terrible. You need at least 10 figs of your waifu.

Is there any real reason to ever go to 420chan besides to talk about drugs or wrasslin?

Because I can't think of one.

and I kinda prefer the drug threads we sometimes have here on /a/

>>121024063
I pick up lots of manga, catch up to translations, and then forget about them.
>>
>>121024279
With manga, you set the pace. It's got a higher potential for art quality because instead of being based on budget it's production values are based on talent. Plus it can just get away with more stuff than anime. At least it could before that retarded new decency law.

I was born in 87, been into it since gradeschool, Its quite funny to me how easy kids have it now a days/ I have tons of old animerica magazines/early tenchi/ranma weeklys' and japanese tankobon from the early-mid 90s because the comic shop near my house was balls awesome as a kid. I hated every weeabo at artschool who's first mana was from barn's and noble...that and they only drew shitty anime ripoffs.

>I felt dirty and ashamed when I first started fapping to anime girls.
As a kid of around 8-10 or so I found anime girls to be a lot more arousing on sites like newgrounds and found 3d icky

glad I've left my teenage years and only fap to 2d now

Manga threads are a lot more comfy than anime threads too. I feel like the readers are generally better posters.
>>
>>121024322
I had a look, their /a/ gets about 30 posts an hour.

There's another, more active anime board, but it seems to be focused on blog posting. It's pretty much Gaia.

There are plenty of /a/ clones, but the problem is that they only get about 3 posts a year.

The worst thing ever is remembering a manga I haven't read in years and then discovering there's still no new chapters out. What the hell happened with Desert Punk? Apparently it's still going, but it's been on hiatus for 7 years, and the scanlators are still behind on shit that's been out for like 10 years.
>>
Upvoting every single post in this thread gentlemen.
>>
>>121024476
Readers are more patient and have better attention spans. A shame most manga don't get regular threads. At least Boku Girl is somewhat popular. I'm still 99% sure the author has drawn porn before, his style feels very familiar.

It is basically /v/ derivative of /a/. They're /v/ who left this place trying to act /a/

What I dislike most about that site is that it eats too much bandwidth
