The main plot has been there with ep.1 when they became heroes.
And I like how it has been dragging out the whole slow transition from happy carefree classic magical girl fighting plus SoL into darker more serious things without however abandoning everything positive. The show is maintaining a nice balance between suffering and hope right now and that's a much better thing than forcing endless despair with both fists right into the viewers face.

Episode 9 is my favorite episode this season. The way all the things just come crashing down on Fuu, her break down moment and Itsuki consoling her was just so perfect.

The fairies however have never been shown to let the heroes get even a scratch to patch it up later, they always block the initial blow, they block anything before any harm could be done, so she was able to test it without the actual danger of really killing herself. Once she saw how the fairies blocked every try before she could even start, she went to more direct methods like Seppuku since she was convinced now that she'd get stopped anyway.

I doubt that. We can see on many occasions that the fairies are summoned by the girls without them being in danger, and sometimes they also pop out by themselves just for fun (not just Yuuna's, but those of the other girls too).
Protecting the girls may be their main objective, but the fairies still behave like regular mascot characters apart from that.
