What did /a/ like the most about the 90's?

Personally I liked how much styles changed over the years.

By the way, it's fucking weird looking back at how many anime were produced per year back then.

According to wikipedia...

91: 27 shows
92: 23 shows
93: 17 shows
94: 24 shows
95: 33 shows
96: 37 shows
97: 40 shows
98: 64 shows
99: 69 shows

Crazy how there are more shows in pretty much any given season nowadays than the first three years of the 90's combined.

>anime were produced per year back then.

Tv series I should say

90's was full of OVA's. That was the thing back then.
>>
>>117605612
You forget that anime wasn't popular in the early 90s, therefore most didn't transition to America. As more and more shows become popular with overseas, people add more and more on wiki.
>>
>>117605705
still the total run time of all anime in each season now triumphs what they produced in the 90s.

I surprised a bubble hasn't formed yet.But unlikely since there's the internet and an influx of younger gen anime viewers.
>>
>>117605705
heh, I love watching 90's ova's

It's like blindly eating a bag of popcorn that was left in the microwave for too long. Most don't taste right, alot are burnt pieces of shit, and a few of them taste pretty good.

Anime of 1990.jpg
936KB, 1250x1855px
It's due to late night anime and UHF anime and dedicated anime broadcasters.
Why does that chart leave out 1990?
>>

Kill yourself.
>>
>>117606880
I'm not if I'm getting baited or if your'e just a retard.
>>
I personally like the style of around 1995 to 2003 or so the best.
>>
>>117605705
The OVA is such an interesting format. Would I be correct in saying that you've got a very definite timeline set out which caters for a simple, logical progression of production?
>>
>>117607535
I don't understand what you're saying.
Are you talking about tight schedules in TV-series compared to OVA?
>>
>>117607696
Yeah, but also OVAs seem like they'd have all the work done before release, similar to a movie (but with less risk and capital), even for ones that last the upper end of several episodes. TV always seems like it's hanging on a thread and there are so many people that have responsibilities that can let the series down.
>>
The industry wasn't full with generic and cliche shows like now, there weren't that many otaku and it was harder to watch anime.
>>
>>117607792
Not at all. There's a reason why so damn many OVA are unfinished. Longer OVA often had staff problems.
>>
>>117605821
This is the best analogy I've ever read. If ever the cliche "underrated post" applies, it's here.
>>
>>117607981
Huh. I thought that OVAs were the "safest".
>>
>>117608282
OVA were a gamble. Even with a bubble economy the money wasn't free.
>>
>>117608408
Man, I wonder what the production and economy side of them are like with today's economic and technological climate.
>>
>>117608282
>Huh. I thought that OVAs were the "safest".
Uh no. Not even close. The reason they are OVAs at all is because they couldn't be on TV either because of content or because of funds (also late night anime wasn't really a thing back then). So practically all OVAs were basically a gamble.

People like to play up OVAs as creator freedom but there is a reason why many of them aren't remembered or went unfinished
>>
>>117605722
>You forget that anime wasn't popular in the early 90s

Maybe not in America, but it was in France , since the 80s or even late 70s

A bunch of generations grew up with Anime.
>>
>>117608495
Today's OVA are just promotional material or bonus content.

What used to be OVA material is now receives a broadcast on TV or in a few cases screened in cinemas.
Hentai are the exception.

OVA were the epitome of commercialism and pandering.

I don't think it's the same kind of ova.
>>
Throw out all the bonus episodes to TV-series and promos that get bundled with manga and you're stuck with Futari Ecchi, Tsubu Doll and Hybrid Child.
>>
>>117608666
>Futari Ecchi,
That was good shit man

That's not the same thing as he's talking about.

>Throw out all the bonus episodes to TV-series and promos that get bundled with manga
Why would you do that? They still OVAs. Like, for example, 10+ episodes OVA for Kiss x Sis or Seitokai Yakuindomo.
>>
>>117607971
>The industry wasn't full with generic and cliche shows like now
Yes it was. Little girl shit and children's robot shit over and over and over. There is as much or more variety in anime now as there was 20 years ago.
>>
>>117609848
This is wrong.

Even though mecha shows were prominent, their content varied to an extent.

The only shows that were the same were the mahou shoujo shit and even then we had gems like utena and card captor sakura.
>>
>>117610054
A handful of outliers across an entire decade does not a variety make. The 90's were already half over before you started to see more risks being taken and more "otaku" stuff start to penetrate the industry, and even then it doesn't compare to the variety of the 2000's.

You have to be blind, stupid, or a liar to pretend that the first half of the decade wasn't dominated by safe shows for children. Yes, there is a lot of difference between, say, Ramune and 40, Fighbird, and Raijin-Oh. But there's also just as much (more) difference between Girlfriend, Kokkuri-san, Sorameso, Kimiuso, Oretwi, SAO, etc...

If you claim otherwise, it's because you've got a mountain of nostalgiafag bullshit that you're trying to sell, or you're just desperately trying to justify why you won't watch new anime.
>>
>>117605612
>Thinly veiled recommendation thread.
fixed
>>
Quality > Quantity

The 90s and early 00s may have had less shows but the difference in quality between shows then and now is laughably large.

We are extremely lucky to get one top tier anime every few years now despite the huge amount being made. You used to get multiple in a single year back then
>>
>>117605612
What is 1994?
>>
>>117605705
Actually I thought it was more of a late 80s thing that carried over into the early 90s.
>>
>anime is dying they said
>>
>>117606847
Why does THAT chart leave off the most popular anime of 1990?
>>
>>117605612
Pretty accurate
>>
Lain, Utena and Eva. Also, the 90s had lots of cyberpunk which is my favorite genre.
>>
>>117605612
Anime sure has grown but now I wish it would die.
>>
>>117605705

was the battle angle OVA any good?
>>
>>117616550
Not really. But I did really like the art style and I do like the manga, so I still enjoyed it.
>>
>>117605612
I'm watching Oniisama E now. Intresting so far.

Patlabor TV and OVA2 were both technically 90's, so I am legally obligated to put my vote there.
You can keep your 3deep5u mecha and tsundere archetype redhead pilots, Patlabor is (or should be) the real definitive 90's mecha.
>>
>>117614401
Brown female Shinji a best. The things she does to my dick should be illegal.
>>
>>117616550
It's good if you can get over the fact that it's criminally unfinished.
>>
>>117618191
Me too. I fucking live it so far.

It feels like I have a ton of bricks on my back when I watch it.

Don't know why /a/ never really talks about it.
>>
>>117605705
>Slam Dunk was in 1993

god damn...
>>
>>117605612

That's actually a pretty good list

But 1993 holds both Tylor and Lodoss, I can't decide. I like both for such different reasons it's hard to compare the two.
>>
>>117605705

As much as I love Nadia her being an irredeemable Hyperbitch + Island episodes negatively affected my enjoyment of it
