The power to curse people with movie tropes.

This curse could end with positive or negative effect, depending on the story trope inflicted upon the victim.

The curse itself would take effect the very next time they are in a situation where it might be possible. There is no discrimination on the scale of the scenario that triggers the curse.

For example, cursing someone with "Villain monologues" trope would have them spitting out their intentions about some nasty deed they are planning - whether the monologue is over a stolen lunch at their place of business or the intention to rob a bank is up to chance.

She implies that she would rather not fight him given the choice, but that doesn't mean she wouldn't have some sort of plan that involves fighting him and losing (which she knows she can do) anyways. I mean, it's not as if the characters in Medaka Box never subject themselves to undesirable events in order to make some plan or other succeed.

I still don't think she had any plan that point, or at least I don't think there's much in the story to indicate that she did. If anything she probably survived because she auto-resurrected with one of her skills once the Fresh master was destroyed and his ability deactivated.

Also even the page I posted states she didn't know Iihiko was still alive so it stands to reason if she knew then she probably would have tried to kill herself via the person she knows could kill her.
>>
>>116932100
Honestly, I want to see it because "never give up" and "believe in your friends" are virtues that are quite often upheld with little or no qualification in anime (or at least certain types of anime).

Part of why I liked Medaka Box was that it had the guts to show the other side of the story (in particular with Naze and her "great things come from hell" ideology), even if it still ultimately upholds those values. But I still wish those two ideals were challenged more.

Another one is "hard work." Medaka Box definitely plays that up, but the reality is that efficiency is more valuable than effort in the real world and spending 100 hours to achieve something is a waste of time if you can obtain the same result in 10 hours.

I'm not sure the point you're trying to make. Are you saying she must've had some plan after all?

And to add to what you say about the contradiction in who's undefeatable, remember the part where Medaka tells Kumagawa that he won because he bet on her? By that same logic Ajimu defeated Medaka as well. Unless of course she doesn't consider that victory. I think a fair number of the 'contradictions' in the story can be explained by the fact that the opinions of different characters aren't fact, just opinions.

>>116932418
What are you talking about?

Anshin'in is a god-being who thinks she's in a manga because she's delusional. And Hitoyoshi beats Medaka even though she is (and continues to be) the "most main" of the main characters. And on top of that, only someone who has read very few stories believes the main character never loses.
>>
>>116932572
Devil Power negates Main Character status. Which is fine but that doesn't apply to the Iihiko who is the "reader" and neither Anshin'in or Medaka have Devil Style if I recall correctly.
>>
>>116932551
>I think a fair number of the 'contradictions' in the story can be explained by the fact that the opinions of different characters aren't fact, just opinions.

Exactly, it all comes down to our interpretation.

>Are you saying she must've had some plan after all?

Well, I rely on what Hanten said when the entire group was coming to the Shiranui's village. "Ajimu is omnipotent and omniscient, but she as a lover of novels never want to read the final" and get spoiled.
>>
The ability to turn 3D into 2D.

>>116932630
Medaka's opinion on Ajimu is that she's delusional. Ajimu's knowledge and powers make it ambiguous that she's not specifically there for meta-purposes.

Also was the time Hidetoshi beat Medaka when he had Devil Style?
>>
>>116932694
>Devil Power negates Main Character status

Indeed, I was talking about medaka, if Ajimu had to fight against her.

>Which is fine but that doesn't apply to the Iihiko who is the "reader"

That's a fucking interesting theory, no sarcasm. I always interpreted it thinking Lihiko was 'another dimension', or something like that.
>>
>>116932869
Nah man. He's literally the reader's insert. Do you remember the scene where Medaka explains her powers and then tears the book? That's actually pretty much literal. If we don't like how Medaka acts, we can just tear the book and she can't do shit to stop it

Yes it's very interesting. That part I had interpreted it like Lihiko was invulnerable to their powers because he's in 'another dimension'. Kind of the 'Book's dimension' and 'outside of Book's dimension'. And for that reason Lihiko could hurt all irretrievably, as if he broke the paper.

>>116933462

You could probably say she has to ability to be omnipotent, but if anyone actually was omnipotent it would be incredibly boring. I mean, imagine if you knew the result of EVERYTHING you or anyone else around you did before it even happened?
So my guess is she didn't use the ability unless there was something she specifically wanted to know. With that in mind, if she only uses the ability to learn information she was curious about, she'd have to know she was curious about that information to begin with, and thus is not truly omnipotent, as if she was truly omnipotent she would already know what information she wanted to know about before she knew about it.
>>
>>116933462
Honestly. I don't see why not. Being an author avatar does technically make you omnipotent. You can have control over the entire universe but if the reader doesn't like your story then you'll end up dead.
Even if the reader isn't omnipotent. They are the one with all the powers and that's what the Fresh/Anshin'in relationship is. It's the relationship between a reader who only knows bits and pieces but ultimately holds the authors life in their hands.

Depends how one defines world and at what location to other objects it was placed.

It could not move relative to it's surroundings. It could not move relative to the Earth (probably smooth out the surface of the Earth as it rotated). Or it could have an absolute position in the universe, in which case it wouldn't even remain on Earth or in the solar system for long as they'd move away.

I was joking about her being delusional.

And I admit I forgot about "Devil Style" (just call it a brain fart, okay?), but even with that, if Anshin'in is right then now special skill or ability actually makes any character in the story immune to the whims of the author.

>>116933192
It's interesting, because there's a lot of meta stuff in Medaka Box, but that's not really why I liked it. I always cared more about the issues it brings up and plays with regarding strength and weakness, humans connecting with each other, what it means to help or be helped by others, the importance (or lack thereof) of ideology and "rightness," what it means to "win," and the basic values of friendship, hard work, and not giving up. I guess the whole perfection thing falls into that category as well. I also like that it gives answers often enough but still manages to leave the sense that those answers aren't necessarily the correct ones.

I'd expect that to be within Anshin'in's vaguely defined powers to screw over our reality.

As to the other thing.

There's a shit ton of stuff that gets brought up that I didn't mention. I just thought of Medaka and picked three from her but Zenkichi himself has way more stuff about him that makes him a more interesting topic to talk about.

>Zenkichi is a way cooler character than Araragi is.

The amount of bullshit they survive, even after "devil style" is only really justified by narrative causality. Hell, Medaka's entire existence as a superhuman is a result of her being the main character of a Shonen manga. Hitoyoshi didn't get rid of "MC status," he got rid of the convenient plot twists and whatnot that the author saw fit to remove from the story, and the others remained.

That aside, I haven't read Bakemonogatari but Zenkichi is one of the coolest and most likeable characters I've ever seen. The times when he tells Medaka "don't forget to care about yourself" more than earned him that.

I'd actually say that he is, in a certain sense, the strongest character in the story. Not because he beat Medaka or anything like that, but because he has the guts to chase after her and the ability to keep up with her in spite of lacking superpowers. He's an all-around normal guy who fits the word "normal" like a glove fits a shark's fin.

This guy is my second favorite character of any manga in general. It's more of what he represents and not just how based he was the entire time. The villain who gets beaten every time and no matter what he does, he always gets thrown to the ground. He's satire of that trope and I'm happy someone created a character like him.

>>116934907
Yeah, I'm planning to watch the anime, since it seems like they're continuing to adapt it, unlike with Medaka Box.

About the "strongest" thing, Zenkichi is strong in a different sense, although I think it's a more real form of strength than "look at me, I can beat people up." At one point Medaka tells Kumagawa, "It's not those who win that are strong, it's those who lose and keep going that are strong" (or something similar). The series really seems to support that idea, and Zenkichi is a large part of the reason it does.

And as for the Freshmaker, I actually found him underwhelming after Kumagawa and Anshin'in. Not that he wasn't awesome. This thread has led me to appreciate him a little more, though. I haven't read/watched a whole lot of Shonen so I appreciated Medaka Box more for the "real world" philosophy and character interaction than for the genre critiques that supposedly exist. But the idea that Iihiko represents the reader makes a certain amount of sense and I'm sure when I reread this I'll consider that possibility.

>>116935086
Honestly, I liked him because he laughs in the face of that fate and enjoys living life how he pleases, flipping off the world in glorious fashion. He's a shitty bastard - even when he becomes a "good guy" he does good by being a shitty bastard - but he's a shitty bastard with all his heart.

Yeah nah dude. I did actually understand your point and why Zenkichi is strong. I just still gotta give Mentos his props for being the best character in the series.

>And as for the Freshmaker, I actually found him underwhelming after Kumagawa and Anshin'in

That's a fine opinion to have. He does appear in the last two arcs and his impact isn't that massive. He's just a character type that appeals to me, in the way Anshin'in does.

I was never a huge fan of Kumogawa but there's a little respect there so it's not a dislike.
>>
>>116935305

basically in order to fully appreciate medaka box you need to understand it is essentially what is referred to a "reconstruction" of the shonen genre where it takes all the shitty tropes, ALL OF THEM and proceeds to format them in a way where it applies to the modern audience in a way that still makes them completely relevant and fun.
you find the more shonen you have read the more you actually like this series.

I'm curious, since both Mentos and Anshin'in appeal to you but Kumagawa doesn't, is it because of their power? I mean, Fresh and Anshin'in are both insanely powerful whereas Kumagawa nearly always loses.

>>116935464
But I already appreciate Medaka Box more than nearly every anime I've watched and nearly every manga I've read, even without that. There's a lot more to the series than just deconstruction/reconstruction of the genre. And I could sort of tell that's what it was doing anyways - there's some overlap between the tropes it plays with and the ones I'm familiar with, and it definitely has a sense of "tearing something down, but doing it because you love it."

I'm the kind of guy that doesn't like main characters in general. I'm the kind of guy that enjoys characters who are just crazy awesome and they know they are.
Which is usually the domain of minor characters and people too cool to live.
Oddly enough even with that bias. I will always enjoy characters who only punch and kick shit as their only means of attacking. If everyone else in a show is doing like fancy magic and using guns, then I'm always going to support the dumbass going into battle with their fists.
It's the one thing I enjoy enough that will make me ignore my dislike for main characters.
For example. Touma Kamijo from Index solves every single problem by talking and punching shit. I can respect that

How can anyone forget the funnest manga /a/ has ever read?
>>
>>116935740
Interesting - but Anshin'in certainly does far more than "only punch and kick shit," and she felt like a main character to me, even if she wasn't really a protagonist.

I too respect Touma for solving problems by talking and punching stuff. It's a very simple way of life, and while simple isn't always best, sometimes it works quite well.

I'd say I like characters who are just crazy awesome as well, but I'd say that's the reason I like Kumagawa so much. He's fucking nuts (or should I say screws instead?). Other than that I tend to like characters that I see as "good" or admirable people, characters that grow or exhibit a capacity to grow, and characters that are imperfect, make mistakes, and act a little bit wrong or stupid even in spite of all that. I suppose that's why I stuck with this series instead of rejecting Medaka as a boring Mary Sue - even if she's nearly perfect, she's a decent person, and from nearly the beginning there were hints she wasn't as perfect as she seemed.

This is only tangentially related, but the modified game of Sevens was so incredibly text-heavy that I skimmed most of it, and I still think the explanation of the rules is bullshit. Yeah nah see. That's where the opposites come in. Anshin'in is the Crazy Awesome type I like and she's well aware how awesome she is.
I also don't personally think she's a main character but that's always going to be up for debate since then you have to argue whether her role as the force behind most of the events makes her main or antagonistic.

I don't like Kumogawa that much because I'm not a huge fan of watching over-powered people getting beaten down. If you have power then you should be as flashy and fresh as possible with it.
He just used it too pragmatically which is fine and 100% understandable but it's not my cup of tea.

As for the "good" thing. I'm not a huge morality person primarily. Let's us a certain onmyoji for example.

>I also don't personally think she's a main character but that's always going to be up for debate since then you have to argue whether her role as the force behind most of the events makes her main or antagonistic.

I don't think her being an antagonist prevents her from being a "main character," but maybe you mean something more along the lines of what I'd call "main protagonist."

Also, to defend Kumagawa a little, even though I don't even intend this to convince you to like him, I think he's well aware how awesome he is, in a certain sense at least. Pic related - no matter how often he fails he can't really be kept down because he does what he wants. It's more of a philosophical awesomeness than a physical awesomeness, if that makes any sense, so it seems like it's different than what appeals to you.

And characters I like don't have to be good people, it's just that I tend to like characters like that. I liked Kumagawa when he was a villain, too - in fact, his best moment in the entire series to me is still probably the time when he says to Medaka, "I was the victim" after forcing Hitoyoshi to sacrifice himself. What a glorious bastard - even in defeat he manages to strike his enemies where it hurts most, and that's that "philosophical awesomeness" that I love about him.

I'm not the "you're a hipster" person, but in the spirit of appreciating even your enemies I thought I'd add that I'm almost completely the opposite of an elitist, even if I often find myself enjoying stories that self-proclaimed elitists love. Mars of Destruction does tend to crush any hopes I have of claiming to be completely non-elitist, though.
