Good thing it's a sword then.

spaglord.

It's a pinch grip. Terrible for strength but arguably best for accuracy. With reinforcement and a Servant body, he could arguably pull insane weights with just a pinch grip.

Here he uses what seems like a modified thumb grip, where the string goes between the index and middle finger, instead of the thumb and index.
>>
>>116089707
He still looks like a faggot.

>LOL, look at me holding the arrow unergonomically. I'm so badass!
>>
>>116089707
I've never done archery in my life, do you really put the arrow on the outside of your arm holding the bow? I always thought it was the other way.

He also use a rather strange position to fire the arrow, his upper body is like in kyudo, but his lower body is facing the way he's firing, like in western longbow archery.

Normally in kyudo the lower body is facing 90 degrees away from the target and in with the longbow, the upper body leans into the bow.

In kyudo you push with the hand and then pull with the other. With the longbow, you use your back and push with the entire body.

It's a strange set of mix'n match styles.

Western archer has it on the knuckle side, japanese and a lot of eastern styles(from Turkey onwards, really) you have it on the finger/palm side.

Generally, western bows used the three finger draw, this way the arrow when released pushes against the shaft of the bow, minimizing oscillation.

With the thumb grip, the arrow is released to the other way just a little when released, so having the shaft on the opposite side now counters those oscillation.

The pinch grip isn't used because you can't used higher draw weights, so the arrows don't penetrate. But it has the cleanest release and least amount of oscillation in mid-air because it doesn't go left or right but is simply let go.

Oscillation decreases accuracy and penetration, so you generally work to minimize that.

If you've ever seen in manga a bow being held with the string toward the enemy after firing an arrow, that's called a tsunomi(I think, I might remember wrong), it's letting the bow spin around in your hand, minimizing the oscillation by allowing the arrow to go straighter. It's considered a fairly unique thing to kyudo and japanese archery.

Of course, this is all generalizations. An individual archer in Japan could have had a longbow style and an individual in the English army could have used a pinch grip with a japanese style of loosing arrows.

Why is it that in almost all forms of fiction, archers draw their bows BEFORE they aim and keep the bow drawn for a good while?

It drives me insane. That shit has to hurt and it's completely pointless.
>>
The forest part of the episode was kind of silly. Why didn't archer just shoot Ilya when he protected Rin? He had a perfect shot. If they're gonna add anime original scenes at least make them make sense.

Yeah that's all fine and dandy but it still doesn't explain why ripped Greek hero couldn't just pull his sword from under a little girl.

There are signs of this all over the place in all routes.

Fate/hollow ataraxia shows that Archer really likes using unorthodox methods in his archery. A mixture of western and eastern styles suits him well considering.

And at any rate, despite all that, he's probably still the most orthodox "Archer" Nasu's ever written.
>>
>>116092631
Gil just shoots accelerated swords like magical railguns. I don't get why he isn't a 'Ruler' or 'Rider' instead. GOB isn't even his ace in the hole, Ea is.
>>
>>116092912
There is no "Ruler" class in the Fuyuki Heaven's Feel.

He's not a Rider because he lacks a famous vehicle or steed. He does possess Vimana, but he's not famous for it; it's merely another one of the treasures he's collected.

Among the Knight classes, the Archer class has the least strict qualifications. All you really need is a long-range attack of some sort and multiple Noble Phantasms. Among the seven classes of the Heaven's Feel, he is best suited to the Archer class.
>>
>>116090823
I disagree
UBW Archer is Fate Shirou

Just as HF Archer is UBW Shirou
>>
>>116090823
He doesn't have to fuck her in order to refuse to hurt her.

Shirou goes batshit whenever Taiga's in danger in anyway.

It's more likely that Archer learned that Ilya was his sister and developed that sort of relationship with her. But since Ilya's fated to die a year later, it ended up dealing a heavy blow to him.

>>116093075
None of the Shirous from any of the three routes become Counter Guardians.

>>116092968
I kind of wish the completed F/SN Gilgamesh used a modified weaker version of the NP that Prototype Gilgamesh used (Enki) as his go-to NP. It'd shut up 'B-BUT HE'S NOT AN ARCHER' people and it's actually cool, albeit as THE ultimate NP for one of THE ultimate Heroic Spirits, it's admittedly underwhelming.
>>
How are you guys forgetting that Archer isn't aiming when he raises the bow, but rather he's fucking CHARGING MANA INTO THE FUCKING NOBLE PHANTASM.

None of the Shirous from the three routes would be stupid enough to form a contract with the world.

Saber-route's Shirou learns from Saber's example that such a contract is pointless.
Rin-route's Shirou learns from Archer's example where such a contract would lead him.
Sakura-route Shirou's a non-issue since he's not trying to become a seigi no mikata anymore.

A lot of her money was lost due to Kotomine being a shitty investor.

She only has enough money to live off, as well as buy gems which are kind of absolutely vital to her magecraft.

>>116093869
She owns the house. She inherited it. The actual cash funds in her possession are actually unusually low for someone of her status. She's not hurting for cash, but she sure as hell doesn't have enough to buy a priceless antique artifact.

>>116093869

She spends all her money on jewels and other extremely expensive shit. Being a magus is expensive, no amount of old man can cover that cost.
>>
>>116093990
>>116093991
The gems are the core problem. Other magi don't have to use ridiculous excessive gems in order to fuel their magecraft.

If she didn't have to constantly buy gems, she wouldn't have such issues, but since she has no choice but to blow all her cash on priceless rocks all the time, she's pretty fucked in that department.
>>
Why doesn't toesucka just buy a pistol instead of firing off thousands of dollars of gems to kill someone?

He redeemed himself when he accepted Shirou's determination for his ideals and protected him twice with his body on verge of death
>>
>>116094712
He didn't redeem himself at that point. He'd just be a tragic villain who died moments after realizing he was wrong. By helping Shirou, by saving him and making amends with Rin, he demonstrated that he really was a good person.
>>
>>116094438
He shot him with five dozen A-rank Noble Phantasms.
>>
>>116094762
>Villain
>He was wrong

It's not this black and white. He never fucking was a bad person. He was saving people over and over and over. He didn't try to kill Shirou because he's a bad person, he tried to kill him because he didn't want to be what he became. Shirou's ideal was to save absolutely everyone, he doesn't even accept killing bank robbers to save hostages. Archer was the same but over time he had to change and became jaded and cynical, betraying his ideal or getting betrayed by his ideal. He's neither bad nor good for trying to kill Shirou.
>>
>>116094854
In terms of the story he was the villain, or in the very least the antagonist. He'd tried to murder Shirou multiple times and put the rest of the main cast into danger. He had reasons, but by the end he realized himself they weren't justified. he agreed with Shirou; his ideals weren't a mistake.

If he had just died right then, you could still understand the reasoning behind what he did, but he ultimately wouldn't come out in a good light. By having him save Shirou and talk things out with Rin, you got a sense of finality and got to see his lighter, heroic side.

The true heroine of UBW is Archer.
>>
>>116090818
Because Ufotable fucked up.
>>
>>116095092
That's stupid reasoning. It's Archer's own fault. He and his past self aren't two different people. If he grew to regret his own actions, then that's his own fault.
>>
>>116093785
what would be a good catalyst for a powerful servant, but relatively "easy" to get?

Illya uses a piece of a Herculean Temple as catalyst. so it doesn't need to be priceless treasure
>>
>>116090764

Because you have to take into account the position of the arrow and not just the bow?
>>
>>116095127
That's sound reasoning, if you led yourself to become something you despise then killing your past self is a fine solution.
>>
>>116095092
Killing Shirou was entirely unjustified. Archer /knew/ killing him likely wouldn't do anything. He said in the novel the reason he was doing everything was to just take his anger out on the guy.

By shielding Shirou the best you could argue is that he protected him from a situation he himself crafted. By saving him from getting killed in the final fight, he showed that he was a hero.
>>
>>116090818

It's not that he couldn't, but that it would leave him open for Saber to attack. That's why he temporarily used his hands to fight, and get his sword later. That was the whole point, to show that he doesn't even really need the sword.
>>
>>116094618
You do realize that a servant won't die unless one of his spiritual cores is destroyed or he runs out of mana, right?
>>
>>116095153
No, that's just running away from your own responsibilities. He decided to become a Guardian without a second thought. You don't get to pretend to be a different person from your past self. That's just selfish reasoning.

>>
>>116095242
>Independent action
Doesn't restore your prana nor heals your fucking wounds you moron.
>>
>>116095273
the best bet he had was that killing his past self would create a paradox and somehow just magically poof himself out of existence. He straight up admitted it was probably bullshit.

The reason he wanted to kill Shirou was to take his anger out on him. That's why he didn't just snipe him one night and be done with it. He wanted to tear him down and break him before killing the guy.
>>
>>116095273
He and the Shirou in Fate/stay night are two different people. All he's doing is taking his anger out on an innocent person.
>>
>>116095295
And he still had enough prana left, as obviously shown in the story.
>>
>>116095295
Why would he need to heal his wounds if they won't kill him? He just hid until the last moment and used up the last remnants of his prana.
>>
>>116095205

There's stuff he can remember...for example, in HF he recognizes the Shadow and he tells Saber that (paraphrased of course) she gets saved (referring to the end of the Fate route).
>>
>>116095383
>and he tells Saber that (paraphrased of course) she gets saved (referring to the end of the Fate route).

I forgot to say "in another route she gets saved" (again, I'm paraphrasing)
>>
>>116095383
>in HF he recognizes the Shadow
Not quite. He fought similar things back when he was alive, but wasn't able to do anything about it and was forced to withdraw.

>he tells Saber that (paraphrased of course) she gets saved (referring to the end of the Fate route).
Again, not quite. Archer wasn't able to save Saber. He does say that he might be linked to her again in the future and that the day she may be freed will come. But Archer himself won't be the one to do it.

The only Shirou who saved Saber is Fate's Shirou.
>>
>>116095330
And that bullshit was worth it, it's a nice bonus.

>>116095331
He doesn't even remember which Shirou he was, during the final battle only thing he remembers of the past is the moment where he took Kiritsugu ideals.
>>
>>116095261
karate is ass
>>
>>116095447
>And that bullshit was worth it, it's a nice bonus.

It's throwing a tantrum. Getting mad at someone for something they haven't done yet, when if he really wanted to just see if he could undo his actions, he could have just killed him.

Ultimately though it was a good thing. Shirou taught him his path wasn't a mistake.
>>
>>116095447
He's none of them. He's the Shirou from an alternate timeline, but that timeline doesn't correspond to any of the three routes.

Archer probably experienced a sort of "Normal End" to Saber's route. He learned about Avalon being inside him, and learned about Saber's past and her circumstances, but he wasn't able to free her from her quest for the Grail. We also know that one of his greatest traumas was being unable to save Ilya from dying a year after the Grail War.
>>
>>116095376
After almost reaching a limit of two days, spending prana to fight Shirou and getting fucked over by Gilgamesh there is no way he would've had enough prana to project Rho Aias and shower Rin with swords, that's just flat out bullshit and Independent Action doesn't even come close to justifying it.
>>
>>116095519
Well obviously Nasu disagrees.
>>
>>116093166
Yeah, but the dual swords and bow fighting got ported over to Archer, just like Saber's personality.

>He learned Saber's identity, and he know what her wish is
>He learned about Avalon being inside him
>He fucked up his arm badly when he attempted to project a Noble Phantasm for the first time
>He wasn't able to free Saber from her quest for the Grail
>Ilya managed to survive past the Grail War, but she wasted away and died a year later, much to Archer's deepest regret
>He had an amicable relationship with Rin, same as all the other Shirous. However, they probably weren't lovers.
>He didn't know about Rider's Mystic Eyes, meaning he either didn't know he identity or he forgot it over time.
>The very beginning of the prologue corresponds to his own memories of Saber's summoning
>>
>>116095147
>Illya uses a piece of a Herculean Temple as catalyst. so it doesn't need to be priceless treasure
I don't think you understand how ironic that statement is.
>>
>>116095777
I also don't believe he was aware of what was going down with Sakura.
>>
>>116095519
Rho Aias is the only thing that requires a lot of prana. Sword projections hardly cost anything.
>>
>>116095777
>He fucked up his arm badly when he attempted to project a Noble Phantasm for the first time

I don't remember this...when is this mentioned?
>>
>>116095867
He mentions it during Fate, when he gives Shirou advice about projection.
>>
>>116095785
Let's put it on another way

>Be Rin
>Go to Ebay
>Search for a high reputation seller
>Buy a stone or some cheap antique souvenir related to King Arthur
>Ship it to Fuyuki

There, now you have a catalist for King Arthur, as cheap as possible.
>>
>>116095519
Sword projection costs him basically nothing. Even for a Shirou who's just started and is unskilled as fuck in comparison can project Noble Phantasms for 5 units each.

Projecting Rho Aius only cost three times as much as a single sword projection. It's only if he has to reinforce it that it cost a lot.
>>
>>116095924
I'm not sure how strict the rules are for catalysts, but theoretically something like this could work:
>go to bookstore
>buy copy of the book of 5 rings
>summon miyamoto musashi
>>
>>116095924
Except not. A stone form the base of Herakles own temple counted. That doesn't mean a random thing that Saber never had anything to do with would summon her. That's not how it works. Archer for instance was summoned using the pendant because he owned and kept that pendant his whole life.

Actually, no. Rho Aius is something of a problem child.

See, in order to keep it up, Shirou/Archer has to constantly pump prana into it. So it's not the same as with other projections. It sucks out a heavy quantity of prana every time he projects it.

And the unfortunate part is it's the only defensive armament Archer has any proficiency with. It's no wonder he doesn't use it that often. It's his greatest defense but it's also extremely costly.

Mirror moon ain't the best translators on the planet. It probably means he lost feeling in it, just like Shirou did.
>>
>>116096027
It's probably a metaphor. I'm guessing he wasn't able to use his arm for a while. That's no different from it not being there at all.
>>
>>116096035
>See, in order to keep it up, Shirou/Archer has to constantly pump prana into it. So it's not the same as with other projections. It sucks out a heavy quantity of prana every time he projects it.
No it doesn't. That happened in the Lancer fight because he had to reinforce it against Gae Bolg. It doesn't happen in HF for example.

So I cannot use my copy of "Le morte d'arthur" to summon Saber? I guess it is a poorfag filter.

Let's strech things a little, what if I do an heroic act of certain nature while Im making the ritual in order to use the action as catalyst?
>>
>>116096077
Unless they're super well known for that act it would probably do nothing.

Consensus is that it's a strange combination of different styles, which is perfectly fine for anyone with little or no amounts of autism, given that he has a servants body and has been fighting allover the world for who knows how long
>>
>>116096077

I don't think actions count.
Even if they did, I'd rather have Sehai-kun choose my battle buddy for me. Weren't all the servants summoned without a catalyst their master's best friends?
>>
>>116096213
Why not get a catalyst that works for multiple heroes and let the grail pick tge one with best compability
>>
>>116096213
What are you talking about?

Saber's catalyst was Avalon.
Archer's catalyst was the pendant.
Caster was literature from Colchis with ties to Medea.
Lancer's was an earring inscribed with a rune.
Rider's was a mirror from a temple in Eritrea.
Heracle' was a piece of rock from one of his temples.
Assassin's was the Ryuudou Gate.
True Assassin's was the Assassin class itself.

Everyone in the Fifth War had a catalyst.

As for the Fourth War, the only Servant who wasn't summoned with a catalyst was Caster.
>>
>>116096213

Which servants actually got summoned without a catalyst?
Only Bluebeard comes to my mind.
>>
>>116095785
Heracles was as a very popular god, he had many shrines and temples.

Wasn't the act of murdering children the catalyst for Bluebeard Caster?
>>
>>116096429
Probably.

It wasn't even a legit summoning anyway. Gilles isn't a Heroic Spirit. He's just a Wraith.
>>
>>116094552
It won't happen, UBW will have the good ending

and Saberfags will defend it
>>
>>116096489
Absolutly disgusting
>>
>>116096378
>>116096387

One could argue that Rinnoske's book was Caster's catalyst. Or the dead kids, since Gilles was famous for being a child killer. The latter would probably make more sense, since it's implied that a prostitute is part of Jack the Ripper's catalyst in Apocrypha, IIRC.

the epilogue after this happened was so sad, especially this part
>>
>>116096489
Going good would just fuck this adaptation.
>>
>>116096489
I'm a Saberfags for all it's worth and that ending was shit. Saber being alive and well doesn't automatically make it good. Even though it pleases me on the inside a little bit, a tiny little bit
>>
>>116096378
Couldn't the human sacrifices be counted as a catalyst?
>>
>>116096521
>>116096548
its already getting fucked with all this focus on saber

alter saber will also probably be saved in HF
you can't stop japan's love of saber

Generally, some kind of catalyst is necessary in the Fuyuki Heaven's Feel. If the catalyst is vague but still a legitimate catalyst, then the Grail will summon for a Servant with high compatibility with the summoner's personality (as was the case with Medusa and Sakura).

The Moon Cell's Holy Grail War is a bit different though. There are no catalysts involved there; participants just summon a Servant compatible with their personalities. The exception is the protagonist, who technically didn't qualify (due to losing in the preliminaries), but his/her sheer force of will caused Saber/Caster to appear before them of their own will. Nero in particular's a special case since ordinary Magi would normally avoid summoning her (since she's something of a wild card), and Nero herself dislikes offering herself up (meaning she wouldn't normally step forward on her own), but the protagonist moved her so much that she step forward of her own volition. Tamamo, on the other hand, isn't even allowed in the Grail War under ordinary circumstances, but the protagonist was "her type" so she steps forward regardless of all the nerfs she'd have to take. As for Archer, he's chosen by a third party (that shady priest).
>>
>>116096582
The only real focus has been in this episode. Saber actually had scenes cut in the previous one.
>>
>>116096582
That's way too far from anything that actually happened but it's so possible it hurts. Ruru brayka could probably save her and Sakura at the same time.

>However, in the first place, there isn’t a Master to be found who would summon her.
>Her true name corresponds to great evil in a certain religion, and the end of her life was a miserable one.
>Just as much as she is an emperor, she is also an artist with unshakable faith in her own genius, and the only absolute justice to her is “beauty.”
>Whether ally, enemy, her citizens, or herself, she will not love anything that does not fit into that category.
>That holds true even for a Master. For sure, she will never obey someone she finds unseemly.
>There’s no magus who would want to make use of a weapon who judges matters based on something like “beauty.” Contracting with this Heroic Spirit is simply too risky.

>“……Well, that’s only natural.
>Magi are clever and calculating creatures;
certainly not fools who would entrust their lives to me.”
>>
>>116096718
>And so she spent her days in ennui in the Throne of Heroes.
>Though she gets lonely, her pride overcame that. She decided not to settle for just anyone, planning on only contracting with a genius of her level.
>And so, at the end of another round of preliminaries.
>Just when she was about to leave, thinking that there was no one to call her this time either, she heard a faint voice.
>When she turned, she saw a nameless someone who, despite being on the verge of death, still fought to stand.
>Someone who was not strong.
>Someone who had no outstanding talent.
>Someone who wasn’t even a proper wizard.
>But―――Saber saw a kindling that twinkled like a star in the night, a kindling that refused to fade.
>Instantly, she rushed forward.
>What she had in her chest was not sympathy for that someone, but anger against the high heavens.
>She knew that it was the way of the world for the weak to remain weak and perish, their prayers to no avail.
>Precisely because she knew this, she couldn’t stand for it.
>What kind of heaven would ignore such powerful will?
>Even in the death throes, that nameless one chose not to give up but to fight.

>“If it would not answer that purehearted wish, the will of the heavens matters not! How can I not answer the cry of that noble soul―――?!” Rather than answering summons, Saber had come to the place of selection of her own volition.
>While groaning inwardly at the offering up of herself that she had disliked so, she speaks to the nameless soul.

>“Answer me―――are you my Master (Praetor)?"
