Though there were some really good directed Adventure episodes.

As a kid I tried to memorize the various prefix categories and things, and then I gave up.

The digimon-trainer relationship isn't really vital for my enjoyment. And not every anime has to "have a point". You'll find bonding and comradery in every shounen ever, there was plenty in Tamers aswell.
For me Digimon is going on adventures, fighting monsters and evolving while not being as boring and bland as Pokemon, having an actual plot and all that.

The most obvious is how the fuck Guilmon evolved into Growlmon to carry Takato's friends on his back so they didn't have to walk, when he had been separated from Takato (so no card slash) and Culumon was also god knows where. There's a lot of other shit like that, mostly from episode 30-35 (I haven't gone much further).
