in just 2 updates, Houdini when from "particles simulation generator" to full fleshed procedural modeling package

I'm not switching back

Procedural combined with non procedural is the future.

Having absolute control over mesh information is an eye opener for me.

Opinions?
>>
>>548033
the only people who care about houdini are people who think that gay little particles are better than meshes
>>
the No Man's Sky of modeling
>>
>>548034

you can literally create procedural randomized neigborhoods in houdini. you can set it up so that you just use MS paint to draw streets in red with the box tool and areas that houses can be in green, load the BMP into houdini, and have randomly generated parameter based houses, complete with furnishings, and all different sizes of formally set dinner tables, etc.
>>
>>548054
its all meaningless fluff
>>
>>548033
>Opinions

It's amazing, but labeling it as a modeling package is misleading to people who are not familiar with it.

Also, H16 is being shown in 19 days. Get hype motherfuckers!
>>
>>548066
It should be a free upgrade. Otherwise you're all getting cucked
>>
>>548054
This sounds interesting for architecture and Archviz.
I've long thought about procedurally generated architecture. Define a site and some parameters and get thousands of design variations with a few clicks. Or, if what you said works, quickly create high quality Archviz scenes by turning a Google earth map into a mask....

I haven't explored it because I can't into programming yet. Do you think Houdini could be a worthwhile visual approach to this?
How difficult is it to learn compared to say, Rhino and Grasshopper?

oh well

just download the regular version and it will ask you what to install.

choose apprentice version from there

Cool, thanks
Another program to add to my learning queue

It's houdini propaganda but this guy's work is amazing to me: https://vimeo.com/

I really really need to focus on learning VEX, I just feel like my artist brain is too tarded to pick up a programming language.

I guess I can't just post a vimeo link?

the procedural modeling is nice, but not at the point yet where it can compete with zbrush or blender modeling. it's just not flexible enough yet, but I'm sure it has certain areas it can be used in.

also i made this in houdini its dumb https://youtu.be/rDClEn68Qyo

What the fuck are you talking about ?
Are you just mashing words CG related words together and hoping something sticks ?
>>

Yeah it's a winner, I've been doing a lot of practicing with houdini, it';s a cunt to get into but I think it'll be amazing down the line.
>>
>>548633
I think he talks about sculpting tiling textures
>>
>>548723

Height maps can be made with your mom's asshole instead of zbrush. Why would anyone in their right mind assume you can supplant a sculpting tool with drawing texture detail on a model in 3D?

I have a feeling the guy thinks he can just cut ZBrush out entirely by drawing over box modeled assets.

Someone has some recommandations for a good tutorial for modeling procedural asset (environments, rock and shit...)for games? I'm a beginner but I have some (little) experience with maya/blender.

Anastasia has some really good tutorials.

They are really hard to understand through, what she does in half an hour can take several days to understand.

For example, in the first video she uses a for each node and recursion.

Who here got outdated work flow?

Work with a friend who wants to get into CD PROJEKT RED.

Tell him to learn substance, he instead picks up Quixel because it is easier. Says all you need to do is use megascan.

Tell him to learn Houdini. He says that will never be used, instead he picks up Zbrush. Tell him Zbrush is the past and very niche, tell him he is shooting himself in the foot if he doesn't learn Houdini.

Tell him to learn world machine, he says no way.

He just got his rejection email. They said he had good work, but his skillset was outdated.

He came to asking me to teach him substance and Houdini, I told him to no. He had his chance.

Anyway, /3/ it looks like 3d art is going to have another revolution, please do not make the mistake of my friend. If he would have picked up the three skills a year ago when I told him to, he would have probably got a job or at least not an instant rejection.
>>
>>549034
any examples of houdin being used for game environments? I'm considering picking it up myself
>>
>>549034
>Tell him Zbrush is the past and very niche, tell him he is shooting himself in the foot if he doesn't learn Houdini.
literally the only positive thing about houdini is that it sounds cool, like you're some magician for using it. Zbrush is objectively infinitely more useful you retard. Kys.
>>
>>549034
>he instead picks up Quixel because it is easier
iv seen amazing stuff made in quixel, even next gen assets. you need to check yourself.

good. in the future zbrush will be to premier hard surface tool. in fact employers are already asking for zbrush skills from artists even when its hard surface

What? not it's not, it's usful for both organics and hard surface.

he will fail.

He should know neither and be able to make good textures in photoshop alone.

I know how to make good textures in photoshop, but never have because using PS is a fucking pain when you have tools such as Quixel and Substance.

Somewhere around 1 - 1:10 Carmack says something relevant to this answering a question some guy has.

I wont search the exact point, but what he says is pretty simple:
Storage space increased a lot since the 90s, we got loads of that nowadays, processing power increased as well, but the constraint is not on space anymore, its on processing power. What that means is it is easier to load in a 5 billion * 5 billion Pixel texture with a 5 zillion poly mesh and render that, than, sit there, say 5 days straight having to mathmatically compute that mesh and build a function for that. So no, procedural is not the future. It *would* be the past, but processing power wasnt there yet, so it isnt either.
>>
>>549387
that doesn't have any relevance

the use of houdini in game development is not dynamically procedural content like no man's sky

most of the stuff produced in houdini is baked or otherwise arranged before it's put in the game

the purpose of procedurality is scale, ie moving away from the standard destructive workflow to something more flexible which allows you to create the main bulk of content exponentially faster than before and then destructively add whatever is needed on top

it's definitely the future of environment art, which is most of the art content in game, eventually maybe other things as well
>>
>>549387
Your missing the point anon.
>>
>>549389
I am not talking about dynamic procedural content here.

I am talking about exactly the kind of stuff you are talking about here.

For non environment meshes that are real world based you go ahead and 3D scan them.

For non real world based meshes you go ahead and model from scratch / a base that is about right using cubes or other base shapes or model from a similiar looking 3D Scan.

And in terms of environmental stuff you will probably never or only rarely see a program like this actually used for that, since it is so easy to build a tool for that yourself, that is exactly suited to your needs. Also, what this results in is the ability to potentially generate the geometry during runtime, which can potentially be very useful, of the top of my head Id say LOD optimizations are potentially very powerful and possible that way.
>>
>>549374
Nowadays there are assloads of tutorials for Houdini, which can actually make it a bit overwhelming if you're starting out and don't know which way is up or down. Here's a small list to get you started.

www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/
The docs are obviously a good place to start for learning the interface and core concepts. They also cover advanced topics if you want to dig further.

www.sidefx.com/learning-paths/
Check out the quickstart videos if you'd rather watch a video then read the docs. It also has links to more advanced material like the Illume Webinars, Masterclasses, and 3rd party tuts.

www.entagma.com/
Probably my favorite site for Houdini tutorials. I'll admit that often times I get annoyed or impatient watching video tutorials because I don't like the presenter's style, or voice, or pace, but these two guys are really great.

www.tokeru.com/cgwiki/?title=Houdini
Lots of neat little examples, using more advanced techniques usually involving VEX (Houdini's shading/expression/scripting language).

On youtube/vimeo look up Peter Quint , FX Hive, Rohan Dalvi, BW Design, Applied Houdini, or just look up topics you're interested in.

forums.odforce.net
One of the best 3D communities there is. Years of knowledge and shared files there. This might actually be a relevant thread for you to check out. http://forums.odforce.net/topic/28476-learning-paths-houdini-experience/

Hope that helps.

Greatly appreciated, friend. I want to start with Houdini and mix match between that and blender. I've seen reels for Houdini and have been hooked ever since
>>
>>549379
Great site, been on there for a while and got stuff for Houdini from there along with plural sight. Thanks
>>
I never got Houdini working on my machine without limitations.
Makes no sense to learn a program when you can't export assets or render in more than 720p with watermark.
So i gave up on Houdini, temporarily, last year.
Because of this thread i tried again,
and it works.
Hallelujah.

Thanks guys.
