There's a scene in EOE near the end when Shinji's crying about how everyone hates him and shit, and Rei's voice keeps replying with "then what is your hand for?" "What is your heart for?" This is Evola's Being. Anno is saying sure you might be isolated and alone, but you're still alive, you didn't just suddenly disintegrate, you have a kind of transcendent resilience, a reservoir of strength that no one can take away from you because you can found it on yourself, your Being, your ground and true Sel, and not the opinions of others. Eva after all is just one long story of a bunch of damaged characters trying to find happiness, but looking to the external when they should be deriving validation from their innermost selves
