I have never screamed at my computer screen while watching a walkthrough of a video game (because the newer version of the game is in Korean only so I had to watch a walkthrough) so I can only imagine how horrifying it is to actually play it.

For me I think audio is what really -makes- a scary game.

I remember watching a documentary about the making of Silent Hill 2 and one of the devs was saying he went out of his way to make the music (if you can call it that) when in the presence of monsters just slightly out of time.

It sounds disjointed but in those brief moments of panic you aren't thinking about that, though that is the part that gets under your skin. It makes you feel uncomfortable.

Same could be said about the sounds the monsters actually make, they're familiar, yet alien.
