Never fucking use the mb limiter and always use CRF if you want actual quality and the encoder to properly use your filesize.

And no, CRF is a pretty dumb option if you want to fit your video a certain filesize, e.g. 4mB for 4chan. If your workflow is to try different crf values until you find something close enough to your desired filesize, then congratulations, you’re fucking braindead, that’s exactly what 2pass encodes exist for.
Of course no one is using the "mb limiter" option, that one is highly misleading and simply cuts the video off if it goes over a certain filesize. You need to calculate the bitrate you want.

Constant Rate Factor is supposed to be an alternative to 2pass.

Libvpx does some weird shit in that it wants you to still input a bitrate even if you’re using CRF for whatever reason, but generally the point of CRF is that you don’t need a bitrate, much less 2 passes. The first pass decides how much bitrate each scene should get to still average on the demanded bitrate in the end whereas CRF tries to shoot for a quality level as opposed to worrying about bitrates, so it can allocate as much bitrate as it wants to for each scene without having to worry about bitrate demanding scenes later on in the video. (Which is essentially what 2pass does, worrying about later parts of the video)

You mean x264. h264 is just the codec, like vp8, the program you use is x264 or libvpx respectively, both available through ffmpeg.

And yes, x264 also doesn’t require you to add a pointless bitrate to CRF encodes as the encoder in general is a lot more polished and makes more sense.

2pass is great if you want to stay within a certain file size, otherwise always use CRF. x264 has great presets, use veryslow if you have the CPU for it, that’ll produce much smaller file sizes at the same quality.

Funny enough though, the recording software OBS allows you to use 2pass + CRF, but only when using NVENC, not with software encoding.

The last part being why I'm asking about x264 using 2pass+CRF and if there is a point to it when possible.
