I just my very first android phone a few days ago. It's been fun to see what all I can change so far but now that I'm actually doing more than messing around I've realized I don't really have a good idea for cohesive design...I just kind of slap together things I think look neat (and I admittedly have bad taste). It's kind of difficult to explain just with words...
Basically you would need 2 apps: Nova launcher, and klwp. (Probably an icon pack as well)

Think of the launcher kind of like a window manager. It controls your basic ui elements like app grid size and spacing, gestures, what your folder icons look like, etc.
For most of the fancy rice's with animations and moving parts you see here, people use Nova launcher to completely wiped everything from the screen and have it just as a wallpaper.

This is where the second app, klwp, comes into play. It lets you completely design your home screen interface with text, music bars, RSS feeds, animations, shapes, etc. as a wallpaper.

The best way to learn is honestly just to download the apps yourself and play around with them. You can also visit the IRC channel mentioned in the OP if you need any help.

3 apps really.
1. Nova Launcher (It has the best support of any other launcher)
2. KLWP (It's what allows people to make the custom wallpapers and such)
3. Your icon pack of choice. (Some popular one are Min, Lines, Cryten, etc.)

Side note: KLWP is semi confusing when you first start so guides and YouTube videos are suggested to help you out. An easier or "simpler" version of KLWP is KWGT. KWGT is like KLWP in the sense that you can things yourself, but it's just a widget (WGT) rather than KLWP where it it is a live wallpaper (LWP).

For the following use a "fonticon" (use the "plus" icon in the top right hand corner and select "fonticon") for this and set it to material check the little box next to the "icon" label and select the calculator icon

This is my first one ever, so be gentle. Also I would like to know how much deeper I can go without having to root.

What if I like the Samsung (that's the one I know) edge design where you pull like the right side of the screen and you get a list of apps and everything blurred, and I wanted to recreate it? How can I do it?
Would something simple like just swiping (like you normally to change home screen) to show a column work? Or can I achieve something a bit more complex and better looking? If I can, what should I look into? (Klwp or kwtg or else?)

I think that might have something to do with it as well. It's just the whole site is a downgraded image board, there is such little effort put in by anyone on there to either be original or funny. Sure 4chan is a shell of what it used to be but 9gag had no glory days. It's just stuff your mom would laugh at and post on Facebook that you'd seen awhile ago. This thing was a bitch to make, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. The info box at the top changes size to fit the text inside (when the weather changes).
