you can do some simple editing with multiple layers, the selection tool, and playing around with hue/saturation in paint.net

This is a really quick job, but in case you want to re-do it yourself and tweak something, the idea is basically this:

Take your image and turn the saturation down all the way. Make another layer with something similar to this image. Where you place your gradients will obviously change the image. Then set that layer's blend mode to overlay (google it). And you're done.

I think this would look way more natural with layer's blend mode color

Just type on yt "how to make rainbow smoke on gimp" (for example) cuz it can be done it the same way
