Besides the official homescreen thread, can we start a secondary one for people new to Android?
I just moved back to Android after two years on Windows Phone and one on IOS (side note, Android is the best IMHO), so all the knowledge I had on homescreen modification and Android in general has been lost.
So this will be a thread for people just starting off. I'll give an example of the format below:
-Device: Huawei Ascend Mate 7
- Launcher: Nova Prime with the Polycon icon pack
- Locker: None, as I can't find one that supports fingerprint scanners.
- Clock widget: Minimal Clock
As you can see I'm going for a pure Android inspired look. I'll be attempting root and eventually flashing ROM's later on when I've built up the courage.
Do you guys have any suggestions, as it would be welcome.
Be careful with the widgets, they drain battery.
Just remove dock, icons, notification bar, get KWLP pro and make a decent home screen
I'm running KWLP and I'm trying to configure music. I have allowed it to read my notifications and set the default music player as google play music, but it doesn't seem to be able to pick up what I'm currently playing. Do i need to do something else?
>>6421717

OP here.
>>6421987
There's an app called GMD Full Screen Immersive Mode that lets you toggle the navigation and status bars.
Only reason I'm not using it is because the free version puts an ugly red line at the bottom of the screen, which is the toggle area. This can be removed in the paid version. I think I'll just buy it as it works great.
Also I have attempted using KLWP, however for now that shit is way above my skill level. I did download KWGT though and replaced my clock with one of their presets (with one slight tweak), which I think looks way better.
So I'm about to change my iPhone and get my self a galaxy s5; is this a good phone?? I've heard mixed reviews about it, I really like the phone but I feel that sometimes it lags a little bit, and I fucking hate lag.

>>6422140
It should be fine, just replace the god awful launcher ASAP.
Don't expect the buttery smoothness of IOS all the time, though you should be fine. The biggest thing I noticed with the jump back to Android is the slight input lag when scrolling anywhere on the system. You get used to it pretty quick and won't notice it after a day or so. Also multitasking is SO much better on Android. Apps actually stay open in the background.

6. Press the Save Icon when youre done in KLWP.

>>6421569
Looks very out of the box, seems like you didn't do much to me, don't feel it deserves a rate at this point. Some things you're gonna hear are 2clocks/10, make your icons smaller, arrange your icons better. If you're dead set on having all those icons accessible from the homescreen maybe get Glyphs or another non-app-specific icon pack and make a few folders, or make one of the nova icons a gesture search app so you don't have to have all those apps on the homescreen. Looks very cluttered, which is one of the big things rice customization seeks to eliminate
.>>6421852
Your icon pack looks very stock. If you're not super fond of it i'd recommend a change
.>>6421873
Hate the clock widget, your whole setup reminds me of stock iPhone kinda. If you can i'd move the widget up a little more if you're dead set on having it.

>>6422556
icon spacing is weird. Looks comfy to use 8/10. I feel like something could be done to make it better but can't put my finger on it. If I could just figure out if that's because of the ambiance of the rice I'd be able to decide whether to bump it to like 9.5, but I can't.

Maybe a different icon pack to match your widget a little better.
>>6423514
I'd remove the text from the icons and change the placement and icon of the app drawer, it looks out of place...otherwise nice if not overdone.
>>6424093
Make every icon Gaben.
Finally started Metal Gear Solid V recently and got inspired to make a new homescreen. Pretty generic I suppose, but I tried to make it clean if nothing else.
OP here.
So I've had a few days to toy around and I've settled on this. Hopefully you approve.
I'm still looking for a couple of things though: Firstly a clock widget that suits the overall feel better, with lighter and thinner text. I know I create create my own, but I just don't have the time.
Secondly I'm also looking for a wide that replaces Google Calendar's. I don't know if such a thing exists, but the stock one is fucking horrific. The calendar rests full-screen on homescreen to the left.
Lastly, like the previous one, does anyone know of an app that can replace the widget of the Outlook mail app? It sits to the homescreen on the right.
>>6424345

It's one of the KWGT presets. I just changed the radius of one of the objects to make the day text more visible. I think the curve adds a nice effect as well. The app itself is amazingly in depth, you could (if you had the skill, which I don't) build yourself some amazing widgets.

was actually going to try that same wallpaper out. I would move the clock to the top where it is black. it would look nicer and be easer to read.
pretty cool layout/feel although I do not see why you would need two clocks on your screen. I would also remove the labels under the icons since the point of an icon is to represent the program + it would look a lot cleaner without the text.

Any suggestions?
Nova launcher + cryton icons
Stock clock, shuttle music, energy bar.

Anyone have this pape? I lost it.
>>6427119
You can use a launcher (nova launcher is great) to get rid of both the notification bar on top (helps with double clock) and it can get rid of the dock. It can do a lot more than that.
As for icons i use "tiny white icons" but I'm looking for new ones so i don't really know. Just try to find one that looks clean to you and is informative enough that you don't have to read the label underneath (so you can get rid of it)
As a rule of thumb the less information you can display for have the max information the better.

2. Symmetry is nice, but too many icons aren't. Consider removing some of the icons to put on different pages.
3. Your icon pack is a nice match for the pape, but you should pick locations on the desktop that add to/complement it, not clash with it.
Honestly, just learn some Zooper or UCCW, and keep lurking. Learn to complement, not detract from, the experience. 4/10.
>>6429987
Nice color schematic, but try these suggestions:
1. Remove the dock and app drawer icon, in favor of gestures (I'm assuming you use NL Pro).
2. Make your essentials (like phone, camera, texting, etc) into gestures.
3.Have another page or two to space out apps.
4.Remove that navbar, or at least change its color.
5/10 - pack, widgets, and pape are great, but app placement, navbar, and too many apps are not.

I'm using nova launcher. I've only had a smartphone for a couple days but i'll keep working on it, t..t-thanks for the feedback <(●︿●<)
R8 me
I know it's amateurish but it's my first attempt. The icons are a clusterfuck but I like to access them as quickly as possible and I use nearly all of them on a constant basis.
>>6427693
The guys over at the IMT should help
>>6430252
>oasis
other than that not much I can nitpick, really like the colors on this one though, having your clock choice be the standard notification bar onesomehow doesn't look unfitting at all and it looks nice and clean, 5/10
pls r8
>>6430197
h-how about now senpai?
I don't have the pro version, so ultimately I can't get rid of the android navbar at the bottom (can you even do that? Or have I simply never paid attention) but I've worked with what I had available.
Went down to the five apps I would be too inconvenienced not to have on the screen (also only want a one-screen setup) and tried several ways to arrange them, all looking awkward. Ultimately I stuck with following the treeline.
Also there might be a small size difference in the clock?
>>6430471
The navbar can be gotten rid of with GravityBox, an XPosed module (read up on XPosed, and if your phone's compatible).
If you want a single page setup, that's great, but I think you'll have to make a choice of actually buying NLP (and getting gesture support) or doing something about that clock widget (maybe the problem is that it's taking up too much desktop real estate?). Or else, you can just love with the awful (but slightly better) app placement.
What's your app desktop's size? And did you allow sub-grid positioning?
If nothing else, how about trying to position the apps along the mountains (if you haven't tried that already)?
>>6428408
Looks pretty good, though try out Nova Launcher's "gesture folders". It shows the icon of the first item in the folder (or a custom icon if you set it). On a tap it opens the first item in a folder and when you swipe up on the icon it opens the folder itself.
Pretty sure this mechanic was stolen from Action Launcher's "Cover" mechanic, but I prefer Nova.
>>6430497
12x12, subgrid enabled
not gonna bother with nlp
>>6430771
Maybe raise that clock? Looks great, actually, 7.5/10
>>6430498
pape?
>>6430795
Here's you go
My homescreen.
first timer here. is this ok? or should i lurk more?? and any advice is appreciated thx
is there any way to hide all my KLWP components when I'm in the app drawer or active apps manager? it's really distracting to have in the background
Opinions on mine lads?
>>6428932
what launcher?
>>6422268
can you post your wallpaper?
LG G4 running nova launcher
>>6431212

>>6431222
Looks a little empty don't you think?
>>6431225
Wallpaper?
>>6431230
Very new to this. Still mirin'
>>6430810
Cute. Get a minimalistic clock and get rid of that notification bar?
My home screen. No swiping. Just nova launcher and min icon pack
anyone have advice on a locker for lock screen for an s6 edge?? i want to use fingerprint unlock but can't find anything that looks good & is functional w/ that
>>6431271
I would also like to know.
>>6430880
what music widget is that? and what's that week bar?
also breddy gud 7/10
>>6431227
No. It looks cleaner without it.
how do you guys find wallpapers for bigger phones like a nexus 6? I haven't had a ton of luck looking around on the internet blindly.
>>6422546
whats the name of your clock widget bro?
>>6431406
thx anon.. all of it was made in KLWP,
>>6431406
in KLWP its called Letter Days,
Put this together at work today
I like this
>>6421569
vanilla S3 with a different wall
>>6427478 here, I took your advice and tweaked my homescreen. Opinions?
>>6431996
Icons are spaced out weirdly.
>>6432324
Looks good. Why are you in a noob thread?
>>6432357
For the love of god, at least get an icon pack.
Lab launcher
r8
Thoughts m8s
>>6432526
Besides the navbar (and possibly dock), looks perfect. 8/10
First time starting on Zooper, I wish windows was this easy to customize.
Does klwp really have a steep learning curve?
R8 please
>>6432357
Kill it. Kill it with fire.
>>6432459
It's way too busy. You've got too much going on there. Clean it up and get it organized, unless you like looking for the app you want to open for 10 minutes.
>>6432525
> Stock launcher
> Stock icons
> App labels
> Fuckton of ugly folders
Fix these things and report back.
>>6432526
Very nice but I agree with >>6432566. Get rid of the navbar.
>>6432701
I don't know what that monstrosity on the right of the screen is but get rid of it. Also replace the low-def wallpaper with something decent that also matches your icon pack.
What icon pack are you using?
>>6429544
can you post that paper?
>>6431536
>>6431543
just how could I go around making an operational play/pause button in KLWP?
I mean, I can get the icon to work and play/pause whatever I'm listening at the time and it was super easy to make out but I would like it to be able to automatically change icons when in play/pause proper when I tap on it
also (just as a side question) how did you do to have the day names show as a single letter and how did you make the circle selectable over them as each day passes?
>>6433034
$if(mi(state)!=PLAYING,play_arrow,pause)$
>>6421960
You shouldn't
Not the MOST eye candy but it looks good to me and provides useful information and usability
>>6433170
I also made it from start
I just think it works for me best and it's cool that it's mine
>>6433172
great job anon but you can do better
4/10
i mean do you really need to know
>your location
>volume
>album name
>track time
>signal strength
>last charged
everytime you unlock your phone?
>>6433202
Not last charged I removed that but the others are used daily with travel and I use my phone a lot for music.
I kind of want to do dynamic colors for things like temperatures and time and stuff, is that possible?
>>6421960
Aaron stop this.
Should I just scrap it and start over?
>>6433242
Depends, what widget is that?
>>6433425
Klwp
>>6433493
Yeah you can do colors, I wrote something for battery:
$cm(255,256-bi(level)*1.28,(bi(level)*1.28)+128,128)$
This will output a color from bright green to bright red on a gradient as the battery decreases
I've noticed that when you click on objects that launch apps in KWLP they launch slower than an icon. Is this normal? Is there any way to fix this?
Here's my wip homescreen. First time using Zooper. Rate it.
>>6433642
just minor perspective nitpicking, the Soundcloud icon blends a tad too much with the background when you look away and try to catch it with the corner of the eye
Oh man...these all look great i can't wait for my new phone to come in especially since i'm getting my first smart phone on about a week
>>6433795
Hope you'll enjoy it. Report back when you're done ricing it so we'll see what you turned it into. Always fun to see the newcomers' first rices.
Something you can already do is to sit down with a pen & piece of paper and just start sketching on an idea you have in your head. That way you can start ricing your phone right away since you already know what you wanna do with it, and you'd be surprised how much more creative you get when you don't just copy the other screens here.
I'm a noob to android and I've learned a lot from this thread, but I need to know something very important. What is the best alternate keyboard for android because their keyboard autocorrect sucks monkey balls.
>>6433502
Where do I apply this?
>>6423348
Youre probably gone but 1-Bit icons fit perfectly with Undertale stuff.
>>6423348
Rule number one of any ricing, get rid of that notification bar.
how can I make it so that a shape doesn't just completely hover over other komponents and hiding them?
I'm trying to make a rectangle drawer to place my clock inside and it just keeps overlapping and I can't bring myself to remember just how the hell did I do to achieve that translucent effect from earlier, but still have the clock visible over the shape
been toying around with the dim function for a bit but it just makes the background translucent and the clock stays underneath
>>6433947
Under color.
Hold down on the color and click on the little calculator at the top of the screen to make formulas
>>6422592
See, this is the kind of tutorial I need for the other thread. A step by step or at the very least links to specifics used in each homescreen.
>>6433066
sorry for the noobish question (figure this is a noob thread after all and I'm relatively new to the likes of KLWP still) but where exactly do I put this?
I end up with a PLAY_PAUSE thingie of sorts that I have no idea what to do with when placing it under a text function
>>6434104
See the calculator thing? That's where you want to place the script. That'll change the icon from the play icon to the pause icon depending on if there's music playing. If you tap the check box, there'll be a calculator icon option at the top, and it'll let you input a formula. The name of the icon depends on which icon set you're using though, so double check that the names are correct
>>6434055
Got it thanks
Rate? Kind of going for a retro/minimalist look. Open to suggestions.
Simplicity is the best
>>6431130
Pretty sexy 8/10
What clock widget is that?
>>6433927
I like Fleksy but there's a bunch just Google it
>>6434246
Get a less cringe worthy wallpaper and dampen the clock's color a bit.
>>6431996
Potential but confusing layout of folders, also clean your noto bar bro
>>6432459
Why do this? This is why I'm all for genocide.
>>6431269
New background or different color icon are needed. 5/10 fix it, 7/10
>>6434452
>Darth Vader
>cringe
Pick one faggot
>>6434607
Idk, they go hand in hand with each other
>>6434643
Get rid of the Google now search bar and change the font on your clock widget. Otherwise very comfy 8/10
>>6427687
Is there any way I can do the box and blur with Nova Launcher?
*I have free version btw
how can I add a selectable progress bar for the currently playing track? as in, being able to flick the track a few minutes or seconds back or forth
