Besides the official homescreen thread, can we start a secondary one for people new to Android?
I just moved back to Android after two years on Windows Phone and one on IOS (side note, Android is the best IMHO), so all the knowledge I had on homescreen modification and Android in general has been lost.
So this will be a thread for people just starting off. I'll give an example of the format below:
-Device: Huawei Ascend Mate 7
- Launcher: Nova Prime with the Polycon icon pack
- Locker: None, as I can't find one that supports fingerprint scanners.
- Clock widget: Minimal Clock
As you can see I'm going for a pure Android inspired look. I'll be attempting root and eventually flashing ROM's later on when I've built up the courage.
Do you guys have any suggestions, as it would be welcome.
I'm running KWLP and I'm trying to configure music. I have allowed it to read my notifications and set the default music player as google play music, but it doesn't seem to be able to pick up what I'm currently playing. Do i need to do something else?
use the nox theme pack for nova launcher, best I've found yet.
I just started doing this. Any suggestions? I really can't figure out KLWP so would rather use apps/widgets.
All I've done is install nova launcher and Tarsus icon pack
There's an app called GMD Full Screen Immersive Mode that lets you toggle the navigation and status bars.
Only reason I'm not using it is because the free version puts an ugly red line at the bottom of the screen, which is the toggle area. This can be removed in the paid version. I think I'll just buy it as it works great.
Also I have attempted using KLWP, however for now that shit is way above my skill level. I did download KWGT though and replaced my clock with one of their presets (with one slight tweak), which I think looks way better.
So I'm about to change my iPhone and get my self a galaxy s5; is this a good phone?? I've heard mixed reviews about it, I really like the phone but I feel that sometimes it lags a little bit, and I fucking hate lag.
It should be fine, just replace the god awful launcher ASAP.
Don't expect the buttery smoothness of IOS all the time, though you should be fine. The biggest thing I noticed with the jump back to Android is the slight input lag when scrolling anywhere on the system. You get used to it pretty quick and won't notice it after a day or so. Also multitasking is SO much better on Android. Apps actually stay open in the background.
1. Get KWLP.
2. Get Nova Launcher (enable scroll down notification menu and remove the statusbar) and remove all icons, they're for plebs.
3. Save this wallpaper.
4. Go get my KLWP set up based off of sarcasmguy1's setup. It's here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pkujuhdl00t0ne4/lemoe_terminal.klwp.zip?dl=0
5. Open it up (import) with KLWP, modify it all you want (example go to global to change the uset name; "lemoe")
6. Press the Save Icon when youre done in KLWP.
7. Enjoy being a pimp and getting hoes.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Each command you see should open up the respective thing that it measures. Date opens up clock, memory opens up RAM etc. Change this all you like!
All the colors are HEX-colors.
Have fun anon.
I took some anon's advice and modified my homescreen. I wish I could find a better icon pack though. Any suggestions?
The icons look nice, but the background looks a bit cluttered.
The icon pack needs to be a bit more fitting.
Looks very nice. My only complaint is that the clock widget seems a bit bland compared to the rest of the wallpaper.
Recommend me a nice free icon pack pls
What else does mine need.
I used to skin a bit but it's been a while since then and I don't know if I want to put the effort in.
But still, I'd like to get rid of the quick drop bar at the top.
First day on this board
What should I fix?
Looks very out of the box, seems like you didn't do much to me, don't feel it deserves a rate at this point. Some things you're gonna hear are 2clocks/10, make your icons smaller, arrange your icons better. If you're dead set on having all those icons accessible from the homescreen maybe get Glyphs or another non-app-specific icon pack and make a few folders, or make one of the nova icons a gesture search app so you don't have to have all those apps on the homescreen. Looks very cluttered, which is one of the big things rice customization seeks to eliminate
Your icon pack looks very stock. If you're not super fond of it i'd recommend a change
Hate the clock widget, your whole setup reminds me of stock iPhone kinda. If you can i'd move the widget up a little more if you're dead set on having it.
In the future, google. But no.
This is actually really funny, remove the text from the icons and it'll be perfect.
go into the other phone threads and get a feel for what you like and attempt to get close to a re-creation without cloning them.
If you describe to me your creative process and why it merits rating I'll rate it. This doesn't look like you tried desu. Read the phone ricing guide.
icon spacing is weird. Looks comfy to use 8/10. I feel like something could be done to make it better but can't put my finger on it. If I could just figure out if that's because of the ambiance of the rice I'd be able to decide whether to bump it to like 9.5, but I can't.
generic and clean
I'm not even sure what's happening here or if I like it at all.
not a fan of the all in one widget, download a couple icons and replace those folders with said icons.
10/10 for execution 7/10 for style (sorry, not a fan, but if you're a fan, then keep doing you, looks like it pretty much follows the theme of what you're trying to accomplish.)
Maybe a different icon pack to match your widget a little better.
I'd remove the text from the icons and change the placement and icon of the app drawer, it looks out of place...otherwise nice if not overdone.
Make every icon Gaben.
Finally started Metal Gear Solid V recently and got inspired to make a new homescreen. Pretty generic I suppose, but I tried to make it clean if nothing else.
So I've had a few days to toy around and I've settled on this. Hopefully you approve.
I'm still looking for a couple of things though: Firstly a clock widget that suits the overall feel better, with lighter and thinner text. I know I create create my own, but I just don't have the time.
Secondly I'm also looking for a wide that replaces Google Calendar's. I don't know if such a thing exists, but the stock one is fucking horrific. The calendar rests full-screen on homescreen to the left.
Lastly, like the previous one, does anyone know of an app that can replace the widget of the Outlook mail app? It sits to the homescreen on the right.
I don't know about the clock but he's using the Lines icon pack. There's a free and paid version.
I agree with you and have changed it accordingly. Originally (having cone straight from IOS) I was looking for a stock Android look, but it grew old fast. I decluttered everything using the gesture based folders that Nova has, works like a treat.
Where did you get the black icons?
Also fairly new to Android. Using Nova Launcher with Velur icon pack.
I admire the setups I've seen posted the times I lurk /wg/, but I don't know if I can mess around with KWLP.
First Time with ricing and klwp here give me all your opinions and criticisms.
+clean and simple +decent color work -the dark icons seem like a gradient I would try to a way to add a little more yellow in and find flat icons
+nice wallpaper +good colors -little empty I would maybe put some more info on the screen
+simple clean good colors and all that jazz I would add a clock widget and hide the status bar
Not much to rate here, but KWLP is pretty easy to figure out and, near limitless possibilities and is pretty well documented on the internet. I'd recommend you try it out anon
+nice icons and colors and stuff -status bar I would hide status bar and add a clock and battery widget
Z5. Nova Launcher, Sony clock, background by stoddartist on Instagram.
Suggestions for a good icon pack? Not sure if a monochrome one would fit.
It's one of the KWGT presets. I just changed the radius of one of the objects to make the day text more visible. I think the curve adds a nice effect as well. The app itself is amazingly in depth, you could (if you had the skill, which I don't) build yourself some amazing widgets.
pretty cool layout/feel although I do not see why you would need two clocks on your screen. I would also remove the labels under the icons since the point of an icon is to represent the program + it would look a lot cleaner without the text.
Reading through these posts and I'm gonna take the advice. Here's what I had when I came onto this thread. For the record, the icons at the bottom are not a dock, but I like having my icons down there. Old habits die hard I guess.
Using nova launcher, flight icon pack, and dashclock widget. Square icon is a folder.
I recently discovered klwp and want to do a collapsing group-like folder, but i don't know where the icons are stored and want to use them pic related its the best i can do.
Once i figure that out i will add quite a bit more functionality but right now i can't even get the visuals exactly how i want them.
Ive been waiting for a thread like this and help me Improve mine
Looks too stock. Get a decent clock/calender widget (kwgt is great klwp is also great but might be too complicated) and lose the dock.
What's on the second screen?
Nothing, I changed my hom screen quite a bit I recon it looks much better now
Two more questions sorry, how do I get get rid of dock and also can u suggest me a good icon pack to suit my new wallpaper (well not really mine but) that can support folders
Sorry im new to this since I got a new phone for Christmas
I like using Tapet to generate wallpapers for my background and lock screen. It is 100% generated on the phone (no pre-made wallpapers that have to be downloaded) and there are several that maintain the material Android look you appear to be trying to maintain.
Nova launcher + cryton icons
Stock clock, shuttle music, energy bar.
Subtle animated gif as background
Anyone have this pape? I lost it.
You can use a launcher (nova launcher is great) to get rid of both the notification bar on top (helps with double clock) and it can get rid of the dock. It can do a lot more than that.
As for icons i use "tiny white icons" but I'm looking for new ones so i don't really know. Just try to find one that looks clean to you and is informative enough that you don't have to read the label underneath (so you can get rid of it)
As a rule of thumb the less information you can display for have the max information the better.
Consider removing the icon text, at least in the home screen
No icons? Do you have gestures linked to apps?
Pretty simple, but 2 clocks look bad
The icons don't feel good with the wallpaper imo
I like this, icon style matches the wallpaper and everything looks in the right place can i have the wallpaper?>>6421960
I don't like removing the notification bar if i don't have the informations it gave me somewhere else
Pretty simple and clean, but that textra icon hurts me
Maybe too simple for my tastes, but i like it
I improved my home screen
Thanks for suggesting KLWP it was a little hard at first but easy to understand after a bit
Been lurking for a while, my first attempt to make homescreen look nice. Any suggestions on what to do?
First attempt, want to try something with a little more color to it like >>6423226
Here you go. Now learn how to use Google image search.
Default widget because cba right now
For me, Lightning Launcher + Widgets offer more flexibility in ricing. Nova/Apex + KWGT are clumsy when you need to have widgets on your homescreen. E.g. you need evernote widget on your phone.
icons are Glyph
R8 me. Only the first steps are done, I want a decent wp and some additional information displayed onscreen
That blur thing is a good idea, but the sharp edges bother me a lot, you should smoothen it out somehow
Thanks, since that post I downloaded klwp and it's fucking awesome, but thanks for the inspiration. I might download kwgt later
I like this a lot, but you should consider making the icons smaller. Or is it purposeful? By the way, how did you find this wallpaper?
Reposting my first try here since I didn't see this thread before.
Icons feel too big. 2clocks. Move main clock up and remove notification bar. Also what's the circle? App drawer?
Clock looks way off. Notification Bar looks way too big please remove. Also get rid of pages on the bottom for a cleaner look.
Just got my phone on Wednesday -- first Android ever. How am I doing? Also, is there a way to make little numbers appear on the icons for notifications?
Rated once, now asking for a rate.
>>6427587 get riid of the notification bar. make a clock and a battery monitor, i have mine on a seperate page. if you ever need to see your amount of cell bars, just scroll it down, it isnt very important. aslo, maybe, if you have klwp, do something for your icons, maybe a box. 7/10
>>6427605 t b h, kind of cliche clock. it doesnt really fit the pixel pape, also look around for pixelated icons 6/10
>>6427617 clock is nice. i wouldnt think the second hand is necessary but it fits the pape. try and make your lower nav buttons transparetn so you dont have that black bar like that. 8/10
im not a beginner, but am i welcome to post mine? id like to get opinions from other people who arent elitest douchebags
Ok guise, I have gone forward. Tell me if you like it, please
forgot to rate >>6427522
when i rated here >>6427668 anyway. this looks very nice! i dont care for that many icons on my homescreen. good paper choice, i like the black and white contrast, how the clock is black on white and the icons are white on black. ohter than the ammount of icons, which if thats your taste its fine, 8/10
still debating the paper though. cant really decide on one
Nova Luncher wuth Moonshine icons. Clock is Chronus + Dash notifications.
What do You think?
I actually haven't riced my phone. Sorry friend ;~; but here's a random pape
>idk why youre even posting in a beginner thread
I dunno, I was pretty new to ricing and this was the first KLWP homescreen I made, so I thought this place would be a good start
anyways thanks for the input dude, I'll try experimenting with a white outline.
For a noob thread any useful or helpful information for aspiring ricers is rather thinly spread, so Im gonna write a little info, or maybe just copy paste it.
Good basic info- from the Official Homescreen Thread on /wg/

How we make our homescreens look so cool and animated
An app called Kustom Live Wall Paper aka KLWP
http://pastebin.com/JzWPVMGP - General Resources: fonts, wallpapers, color palettes - stolen from the Phone Thread on /w/
I'm assuming you're using Google Now launcher, as it oversizes icons like that. Get rid of it. Get Nova Launcher or a similar decent launcher. Get a clock. Get an icon pack. Do these basics and it'll already look a million times better.
My first self-made homescreen, rate and give me tips please
UCCW crashed on me 13 times before I've finished all the widgets...I've almost ripped my fucking hair out
I have been a stock Android person for about 3 years now. Just today I decided to try Nova Launcher and added something call Shadycons. Got this effect. I like it.
I really like it. Colorful, but muted background. Clean, functional widgets. If the battery had a percentage, that would be better to me. That dot at the bottom, the screen indicator? You should be able to get rid of that. Also, I'd space out your widgets between two screens. Only one makes it a bit busy. Otherwise, 8/10.
What's wrong with my clock? Show your work.
3/10. Icons don't vibe with background, you have three levels of icons/folders/nav buttons. How did you get rid of the black bar behind your nav buttons and though?
Guys why am I not getting the notification tabs above my apps, like when i get a text or a facebook comment. I have nova launcher and simply 8 bit icon pack. Help me please
My first attempt, and I'm not really happy with it. It feels a bit empty, do you guys know things to fill it a bit up?
I used to have a Music Widget on the left side, but now I have an LG V10 and I have that widget on the 2nd screen at the top of the device. Any ideas as to what I could use to populate my left most screen?
Maybe Ram... but I have 4GB of RAM so i doubt I'll ever fill it...
and Thank You! The calendar is called "Calendar Widget: Month+Agenda" on the Play Store by "IT Benefit". I bought the license (couple of dollars) and it allows me to get it to look like this.
First attempt, I'm too scared to rate others since I'm new to this.
Arrange your icons a bit more symmetrical. Consider making your clock smaller, and get rid of your notification bar as well as your page indicator. 4/10, I really like your icon pack.
Polycon & nova launcher work rather well
What launcher are you using?
1. The widget looks really ugly, and it interferes and distracts from the (awesome) pape
2. Symmetry is nice, but too many icons aren't. Consider removing some of the icons to put on different pages.
3. Your icon pack is a nice match for the pape, but you should pick locations on the desktop that add to/complement it, not clash with it.
Honestly, just learn some Zooper or UCCW, and keep lurking. Learn to complement, not detract from, the experience. 4/10.
Nice color schematic, but try these suggestions:
1. Remove the dock and app drawer icon, in favor of gestures (I'm assuming you use NL Pro).
2. Make your essentials (like phone, camera, texting, etc) into gestures.
3.Have another page or two to space out apps.
4.Remove that navbar, or at least change its color.
5/10 - pack, widgets, and pape are great, but app placement, navbar, and too many apps are not.
I know it's amateurish but it's my first attempt. The icons are a clusterfuck but I like to access them as quickly as possible and I use nearly all of them on a constant basis.
other than that not much I can nitpick, really like the colors on this one though, having your clock choice be the standard notification bar onesomehow doesn't look unfitting at all and it looks nice and clean, 5/10
h-how about now senpai?
I don't have the pro version, so ultimately I can't get rid of the android navbar at the bottom (can you even do that? Or have I simply never paid attention) but I've worked with what I had available.
Went down to the five apps I would be too inconvenienced not to have on the screen (also only want a one-screen setup) and tried several ways to arrange them, all looking awkward. Ultimately I stuck with following the treeline.
Also there might be a small size difference in the clock?
The navbar can be gotten rid of with GravityBox, an XPosed module (read up on XPosed, and if your phone's compatible).
If you want a single page setup, that's great, but I think you'll have to make a choice of actually buying NLP (and getting gesture support) or doing something about that clock widget (maybe the problem is that it's taking up too much desktop real estate?). Or else, you can just love with the awful (but slightly better) app placement.
What's your app desktop's size? And did you allow sub-grid positioning?
If nothing else, how about trying to position the apps along the mountains (if you haven't tried that already)?
Looks pretty good, though try out Nova Launcher's "gesture folders". It shows the icon of the first item in the folder (or a custom icon if you set it). On a tap it opens the first item in a folder and when you swipe up on the icon it opens the folder itself.
Pretty sure this mechanic was stolen from Action Launcher's "Cover" mechanic, but I prefer Nova.
12x12, subgrid enabled
not gonna bother with nlp
Here's you go
first timer here. is this ok? or should i lurk more?? and any advice is appreciated thx
Looks a little empty don't you think?
Very new to this. Still mirin'
My home screen. No swiping. Just nova launcher and min icon pack
anyone have advice on a locker for lock screen for an s6 edge?? i want to use fingerprint unlock but can't find anything that looks good & is functional w/ that
how do you guys find wallpapers for bigger phones like a nexus 6? I haven't had a ton of luck looking around on the internet blindly.
Put this together at work today
vanilla S3 with a different wall
First time starting on Zooper, I wish windows was this easy to customize.
Does klwp really have a steep learning curve?
Kill it. Kill it with fire.
It's way too busy. You've got too much going on there. Clean it up and get it organized, unless you like looking for the app you want to open for 10 minutes.
> Stock launcher
> Stock icons
> App labels
> Fuckton of ugly folders
Fix these things and report back.
Very nice but I agree with >>6432566. Get rid of the navbar.
I don't know what that monstrosity on the right of the screen is but get rid of it. Also replace the low-def wallpaper with something decent that also matches your icon pack.
just how could I go around making an operational play/pause button in KLWP?
I mean, I can get the icon to work and play/pause whatever I'm listening at the time and it was super easy to make out but I would like it to be able to automatically change icons when in play/pause proper when I tap on it
also (just as a side question) how did you do to have the day names show as a single letter and how did you make the circle selectable over them as each day passes?
Not the MOST eye candy but it looks good to me and provides useful information and usability
Not last charged I removed that but the others are used daily with travel and I use my phone a lot for music.
I kind of want to do dynamic colors for things like temperatures and time and stuff, is that possible?
Should I just scrap it and start over?
Yeah you can do colors, I wrote something for battery:
This will output a color from bright green to bright red on a gradient as the battery decreases
Here's my wip homescreen. First time using Zooper. Rate it.
Hope you'll enjoy it. Report back when you're done ricing it so we'll see what you turned it into. Always fun to see the newcomers' first rices.
Something you can already do is to sit down with a pen & piece of paper and just start sketching on an idea you have in your head. That way you can start ricing your phone right away since you already know what you wanna do with it, and you'd be surprised how much more creative you get when you don't just copy the other screens here.
I'm a noob to android and I've learned a lot from this thread, but I need to know something very important. What is the best alternate keyboard for android because their keyboard autocorrect sucks monkey balls.
how can I make it so that a shape doesn't just completely hover over other komponents and hiding them?
I'm trying to make a rectangle drawer to place my clock inside and it just keeps overlapping and I can't bring myself to remember just how the hell did I do to achieve that translucent effect from earlier, but still have the clock visible over the shape
been toying around with the dim function for a bit but it just makes the background translucent and the clock stays underneath
sorry for the noobish question (figure this is a noob thread after all and I'm relatively new to the likes of KLWP still) but where exactly do I put this?
I end up with a PLAY_PAUSE thingie of sorts that I have no idea what to do with when placing it under a text function
See the calculator thing? That's where you want to place the script. That'll change the icon from the play icon to the pause icon depending on if there's music playing. If you tap the check box, there'll be a calculator icon option at the top, and it'll let you input a formula. The name of the icon depends on which icon set you're using though, so double check that the names are correct
Rate? Kind of going for a retro/minimalist look. Open to suggestions.
