Phone Thread #147

Before asking for a wallpaper, reverse image search it. This function is built into 4chan now. Its not hard to do.

New rice = new blog post about my phone

Xposed seems to work fine on 6.0
Modules like gravitybox seem to have lost some features in the move. I assume they will get ported in updates but mostly everything is there.

It's getting more troublesome to flash and root with the new security update schedule present on 6.0 + for the Nexus line

Marshmallow seems to be working better than Lollipop for my N5. Not sure if it's just placebo and fancy animations but I don't care enough to look for technical proof.

Looks nice but the off-center text and the gap between the middle grey-ish box and the white boxes in the teal box are bothering me more than they should. (Also, get a better font.)
>>1878411
Fucking adorable. Clean, sleek, gets all the stuff you want in a presentable way. 10/10, only thing I'd change is making the calendar slightly smaller so there's a small margin between the edges of the screen/box and the calendar (so it looks less cramped).

If you really want to try and make it work you should get rid of the icons which aren't on the dock, as based on perspective lines implied from the sides of your dock those three icons should be at least 1/3 of their current size.

As for the miscellaneous icon widgets that you have, you might as well change the font or something because it looks very hard to read.

But the wallpaper you chose to work with is difficult to manage without use of flat areas so that might be the problem.

anyway do what youwish

Suggestions/criticisms?
>>
>>1878442
The infos in the top right corner are too close. Also that font doesn't look that good, might want to switch it. The rest is fine.

>>1878965
I really like the colours. I think the font might look better in a fitting colour.
Don't add banners, the rice doesn't need them.

>>1878981
It somehow looks like it is missing a theme. I'm aware that the theme is probably Shinobu but with all those colours it feels like random shit slapped together in my opinion.
>>
>>1878442
I like it the way it is, simple and clean, complements the 10c weather.

My only suggestions would be possibly moving more of the girl into the picture, so that there isnt such a big gap between her head and the top banner, and possibly shifting the date slightly (maybe by 1 or 2) to the right so that the back of the 8 and the 9 line up, but that may change as the date changes so maybe it can't be 'fixed. '

Either way, good job.

The vertical gap is limited by the horizontal space I have and the aspect ratio of the picture.
In other words, if I were to give her more vertical space, she would start overlapping the left banner and eventually start clipping off the left side of the screen.

Though after shrinking the size of the left banner, I've enlarged her accordingly. Also, the alignment problem is more or less fixed now and I've updated the font.

By the way, I can't seem to get KLWP to retrieve and display my alarm clock information properly. It just always says that I had an alarm "moments ago," meaning it's always getting 0 hours, 0 minutes, 0 seconds for the time to next alarm. I'm using the Puzzle Alarm Clock app. Anyone have a similar problem or know how to fix it?

Anyone have any ideas for an icon pack for this? I can't find anything I quite like.
>>
>>1879119
Image in the middle should probably be the same width as your icons and clock sections.

You should make the padding to the right of the circle equal to the padding on the left of the clock and probably also make it the same color.

The phone, camera, and messaging shortcuts should be vertically centered. Also, why is that box rounded whereas all the other boxes are sharp?

You might also want to try adding a a background to your media controller to match the clock and icons sections.

Mainly just minor consistency and cohesiveness issues; other than that, I really like the choice of color scheme and the layout overall.

Make your colors consistent, use the dark grey in the clock in the icons too. The random bubble (?) icon near her umbrella is also really out of place, and the icons are too far to the right in general (should be nudged left a bit, so that the right side of the box of icons aligns with the right side of the clock). Also, get a better font.

>>1879772
I know this is 4chan so this is probably not the best place to say this, but the dev is a pretty awesome guy who actively provides support for the KLWP community, and the app costs less than a cup of coffee. If you can't figure out how to crack it on your own, just pay for it. It's fucking $3, man.
>>
>>1879836
Hi klwp dev
>>
>>1879883
>implying implications
>implying most people in this thread could develop an app if their lives depended on it
I couldn't either. I rely on KLWP, myself, and I torrent stuff like Photoshop and Illustrator and animu and whatnot, but that's different than asking to be spoonfed instructions on how to pirate an app that's: 1) $3. Less than that, actually, by a penny; 2) Very useful. Enough so that it warrants that $3, easily; 3) Got free alternatives.

There's enough newfags asking for walls or sauce on a wall every damn thread without reverse image searching that going so far as to ask to be spoonfed how to pirate an app that really does not need to be pirated deserves being called out.

What you did is you probably bought a pre-made theme for an app, not the app itself. It's not like someone gypped you -- you go the lazy route, you pay money (or spend time to find) pre-made themes for an app (which there is a free version of anyways, just go download that if you can't figure out how to crack it yourself).
>>1880195
I think both have a different effect, personally I prefer this but it makes the text in the bottom box a bit dense-looking (if that makes sense, what I mean is it looks like there's a lot more text than there is when it's smaller like that). Up to you. I would remove some text personally (like "contacts" or "all apps").

You have 3 clocks. Add only what you need, decorations come after that.

Yes. Ricing is just changing the layout and stuff doesn't matter which android phone. root only adds deeper changes.

You should hide your notification bar.
The text shouldn't be on the picture.
Try to swap the icon pack to something flat like Tiny White Icon Pack or Big White Minimal Icons.

Clock/battery (???) is really way too cluttered I think. Also,
>90
>90
>80
What?
In addition, you don't need the stuff in the bottom corners and the app drawer icon should be themed as well.
>>1880919
>>1880920
This is just a cobbled together edition of a bunch of widgets, from the look of it? That icon in the bottom right is out of place, and the battery meters/bars could definitely be done better. They look like the default Zooper presets for meters (just circular, in the case of CPU and RAM). The upper part needs to be reworked, just poor arrangement of elements and nothing goes together properly.
>>1880920
Get rid of the folder icons, and I'd personally make my own player in Zooper (assuming you're using it; if not, make it in whatever you're using). That aside, cool effect with the reflections.
>>1880924
You can just put it on an oversized canvas in Photoshop or what have you (i.e. open a new canvas in PS with the minimum dimensions for /w/, then just paste your screenshot in the middle (align it vertically/horizontally) and wham bam, bob's your uncle.)

Don't do what the other anon said. Use a flat icon pack.

>>1881029
Clock colours don't work and the calendar makes the whole thing off balance. The app drawer icon is ugly just use a gesture m8 it's so much nicer.

>>1881149
The widget is awful, throw it out and start again. Don't bother with all that useless info and use colours that fit the main image better. The weather icon doesn't work. The reflection effect doesn't look very good either. I'm not a fan of the blue you used, it's too saturated.
>>1881150
Make the music widget background the width of the icon area cause the info text needs more padding room so it can breath a bit. The icons are meh but I just have a thing against icons with shadows or gradients. If you don't have an icon for something just try making one yourself, it's not that hard. The 'media' text is entirely unnecessary and the shadow is very poorly executed. Just get rid of it.

Don't be disheartened, keep trying.

All you need to know from a clock widget really is the date and the time. Try and find a font that fits the rest of the rice. In your case I think a lightweight sans font would work well, something ultralight. Colours are important, try and use ones that are from/near to colours in the wallpaper art.

Hello, new fag here with the phone wall papers. It all looks bad ass but I noticed the links in the first post for I phone don't work. Could an anon help me out and explain what some of the terms are? Thank you in advance.
>>
>>1881449
The links work fine. What specifically do you need help with?

I'm not an iPhone user so I can't promise I can help but it would be useful to get what's troubling you out in the open in case someone knows.
>>
>>1881454
When i coppy and paste the link it say the creator deleted it. ( i'll have to try again ) But i have no idea What "ricing" is. Also Do you guys make your own "format" for lack of better words. Like how the icons are in specific places.
>>
>>1881459
You probably copied the link wrong.

'Ricing' is a general term used to describe customising your phone or desktop or other device. That's how we use it, at least. It comes from its use to describe Japanese guys who heavily modded their cars (Asians=Rice). Its use to refer to car modding isn't new either https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ricing

You can rice pretty much anything.

The main aspects of phone ricing are the launcher, the icons, the wallpaper, and the widget. The launcher is what allows you to edit things, icon packs and other custom icons change how the app icons look etc., the wallpaper is obviously a central part of the rice and the widgets are optional extras that are sometimes nice but often shit and unnecessary.

With iPhone you don't have as many options as on Android, if you want to rice it at all you pretty much have to jailbreak (the Android equivalent, rooting, isn't necessary at all for ricing on droids). When you do jailbreak though you can change pretty much everything including icons, their placement, widgets, folders etc. None of this is as easy as it is on Android, sadly, and doing it will probably void any warranty you have.

With both iPhone and Android it's possible to download pre-made themes using certain launchers and apps. These will come with someone else's widgets, icons, wallpapers etc. Don't do this. Ever. It is the stupidest thing you can do cause it's cheap, unoriginal and will universally 100% of the time look worse than something you can make and edit yourself.
This post ended up longer than I expected it to be, hopefully it helps.
>>
>>1881466
Yea! Thanks anon for clearing a lot of this up for me! I guess i copied the links wrong because they work now. I'm still doing a bit of research on jail breaking, however i hope to soon participate in future threads. Thanks again anon!

>>
>>1881481
(different anon here)
Go on the pirate bay and download the latest photoshop version that has lots of seeds. There's not much difference between CS6 and CC so get whichever is easier to crack.

As for getting what that first anon's done: he's layered stuff, used a rendered image, used clipping masks (but you don't need to do that, you can do it a rougher way), and used a widget/klwp trick to get the girl's head in front of the clock. That's the only mildly tricky bit and it literally just involves putting a cutout of her head in the widget itself and positioning it correctly.

Hopefully he can be bothered to type out a detailed explanation but it's really not very complicated once you have Ps open in front of you.

Pic related is the tl;dr version
You will need two images, a background and a render.
First of, make a copy the background layer and blur it (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur). What I did next is decrease the saturation of the blurry background by making a Black & White setting layer and reducing it's opacity to about 50%.
Next up is the boxes. You'll kind of have to figure out their position on your own based on where your icons will be. Create the boxes using the Rectangle Tool.
Now you'll add the white outline to them. Select any of the rectangle layers and then go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options. In the new window, check the Stroke layer and adjust it so it's inside, 3px wide and white.
You can copy the outline setting of one layer by right clicking on it and selecting Copy Layer Style and Paste Layer Style on the other rectangles.
Now, you should have that original background layer somewhere. Make one copy of it for each rectangle. Change the layers' positions so that there's one background layer above every rectangle layer. Now select a background layer and press Alt + G. This'll create a clipping mask with the layer below it (i.e. the rectangle). Repeat for all rectangles.
Now it's time to add the render. Position it where you want it to be and make a copy of it. The render's layer should be above the layer of the rectangle you want it to pop out of. Now press Alt + G again. Now select the render copy which isn't a clipping mask and delete the bottom half, i.e. the parts which aren't supposed to pop out. At this point you should have an image which looks similar to mine.
As for the clock, that's made in Zooper. Make a clock first, then make a rectangle and mold it until it resembles the shape of the head which is supposed to cover the clock. Then find the Drawing Mode and select Clear. You should now have a clock which looks like it's been partially eaten. Mess around with the options until you find the right position.

Screen real estate isn't distributed and used evenly -- there's a rather large gap under the icons. Move the battery bar underneath the icons and make it the same width as the icon bar (if that makes sense).

Icons are way too big, and the clock on the cup isn't my cup of tea but eh. Icons are the main problem here, otherwise it'd be a pretty standard layout.

>>1883229
Just google it, there's a browser application or you can do it locally by compiling it from its github source. I'd personally suggest Nova as a launcher, it's pretty neat. You don't need to root your phone for most things, either, so don't sweat it (I can't root mine, as there's no root available, but hey. You can do most of the visual stuff ITT without it).

cba means "Can't be arsed" if I remember right.

Personally I think it looks best in either the first or second one (I'm partial to the latter). My main issue is the font and the spacing of the clock (it's just too close to the borders in my opinion) but other than that it's quite nice. 9/10 for sure. The last/third one looks bland and generic in comparison to the first two.
>>
>>1883440
I give this one a 9.5/10.
Simple, minimalistic, and not too confusing. One thing I would like to add is the main screen icons are all over the place. See if you can synergise them/bring a better order

>>1882975
but theres enough already ;_;
>>1883405
It's pretty jarring, nothing quite fits. The additional clocks and the over-sized black album cover takes away from the paper. Your icons are a step in the right direction, but the additonal numbers at the bottom take away from the composition of them being together. On the note of composition, work on that, most the stuff on your screen looks like it was just plastered together randomly.
>>1883440
Every post looks nice, but this last one is my personal favorite, really simple. Everything fits nicely and appears to be where it should be.

7/10, I get where you got your color scheme from but I'm personally not a huge fan of the way the boxes don't extend all the way to the edges of the screen and thus have a black outline. The music widget is kinda meh too, and the clock and music should use better fonts. It's better than some rices for sure, and it's clean, but it's just very meh.

I getcha point, but I actually did that on purpose since my phone is black, and it makes the bars pop out more. You can't even see the outline IRL, I guess it's more noticeable here.

Even though your icons are large, they're still in a place where it's hard to make them out. They don't really match your wallpaper either, since they're a heavier shade of green.

Your clock matches the color scheme, but it's overwhelming. Make it smaller, and try adding more to your homescreen.

The two icons change when the dash icon is pressed. Overall there are a lot of animations but pics can't show that.

2/3

I really don't want to increase the size of the text but it's probably good I do so. Weather Icon is custom.

There's actually no image banding on the phone or in the actual image. Huh.

3/3 in case anyone wants original background.

I'll probably do the lock screen later on this week.

I think if you have the calendar days in a fashion similar to the month it would be nicer, looks really messy right now. Also from a vector sort of perspective you have a lot of lines that cross over in weird areas (I think if they crossed over towards the corners it would be acceptable).

A lot of your widgets are really unnecessary like your music player for example (I mean I probably would have mentioned it if you integrated it nicely)

Having a circular widget and a circular launcher icon amongst piles of text and square icons is a little odd too.

My rices aren't too great or anything so please don't take my criticism too hard.
>>
>>1886012
No problem. It was my first time, so it could've been worse. It's a learning process and with more tweaking and a little creativeness, I should be able to pump out a better layout. Thanks for the input.

5/10, get a non-shit layout that uses more than 30-40% of the screen.

Been long enough! Would alter the font sizes on the ls and make all the icon sizes consistent on the homescreen but it's cute otherwise.

I like this style except for the clock and weather on the right screen. It lacks the symmetry of the left and center screen.

>>1879430
I also like this newer style and I'm glad to see that it's caught on more than some of the... others. I'm no fan of the Lines icons, or whatever they're called, though.

>>1881774
And this is good community.

>>1885700
I was sure I'd seen something very similar to this without the drawer icon, which I personally prefer. I think the icons were also smaller or at least had a smaller profile, which I think works better for the style. I really like the idea, though.

I actually set the different sizes for the clock and date on purpose, I like to see the clock more than the date but i'll see what it looks like at the same size.
The icon circle is the same size just not the icon glyphs. I can't do anything about those unless I edit them and we all know i'm too lazy for that lmao.

>Kotori
-1/10 confirmed bad idol taste ;-)
I like the dark layout, the icons remind me of early iOS icons lmao
>>
>>1886687
Oh, no I meant I'd make the font difference more dramatic. They look about the same size, I'd just make the clock bigger if it were me but yeah. I digress. You do you, man.
>>1886624
Did you also do that one Love Live! one that looked kinda similar? I know that anon posted the template on /w/ a while ago. If so, love both of these, and if not, no stress. This looks great though. Only thing I'd change is the top bar in the second screen, it looks too left-heavy on the bar in my opinion. Otherwise, 10/10.
>>
>>1886709
Might have, I haven't been here for quite a while. Thanks, I'd actually already changed most of the style almost immediately after I posted last night, anyway.

Reading is a complex cognitive process of decoding symbols in order to construct or derive meaning (reading comprehension). Reading is a means of language acquisition, of communication, and of sharing information and ideas. Like all languages, it is a complex interaction between the text and the reader which is shaped by the reader’s prior knowledge, experiences, attitude, and language community which is culturally and socially situated. The reading process requires continuous practice, development, and refinement. In addition, reading requires creativity and critical analysis. Consumers of literature make ventures with each piece, innately deviating from literal words to create images that make sense to them in the unfamiliar places the texts describe. Because reading is such a complex process, it cannot be controlled or restricted to one or two interpretations. There are no concrete laws in reading, but rather allows readers an escape to produce their own products introspectively. This promotes deep exploration of texts during interpretation.[1] Readers use a variety of reading strategies to assist with decoding (to translate symbols into sounds or visual representations of speech) and comprehension. Readers may use context clues to identify the meaning of unknown words. Readers integrate the words they have read into their existing framework of knowledge or schema (schemata theory).

I've got you covered, anon.

It looks like they've installed a blank icon pack as their default icon pack. This eliminates the icons from the app drawer.

From there, if you'd like to add something to the desktop, you've gotta manually choose an icon yourself.
