Does Insulate apply itself to each party member individually (like Kabuff for example) in DQ6 or does it just sort of hang about for its duration? No. If your complaint is about the accents (like most people who parrot the "IV-VI on DS is bad" meme) then you should know they were toned way down from 4. I'd agree that 4 on DS is a legitimately bad way to play though because of the lack of party chat. The other two in the Zenithian trilogy have their definitive versions on DS.

Meant to add that I did this without getting The Hero (or any of my characters) the Hero vocation. Naz was an Arnamentalist, Ashlyn a former Luminary and now a Dragon, Nevan a Sage, Carver a Gladiator and Milly a Paladin. I honestly thought 5 was lame after finishing 1 to 4. Mostly because it is entirely on rails, the world never really opens up and you just go from one story event to the other. Monster recruitment being based on a small random chance sucked, too.

And it didn't have the class system of 3. The one introduced in 6 was mildly annoying, but still an improvement over 5's lack of choice.

i personally really like it as a kind of jumping right into the pool device -- DQ games are much slower paced than most other JRPGs, especially VII, and the extremely slow, dialogue-focused first section serves as an undeniable indicator of that. if it turns you off that much, maybe the game isn't for you. Which FFs are your favorites and why? The DQ games are almost as varied as FF titles.

It really depends on what type of player you are.

If you like classic NES games, I is a good point, either on SFC/Android, or on NES if you're especially into game history. It's grindy and simplistic but really short. It can be beaten in a couple hours if you follow a walkthrough.

If you're looking for something more like SNES JRPGs, go with either the DS version of V or the SFC version of III. These are more story-focused and are bigger, but still linear, expect at least 30 hours.

If you're looking for something more like modern/post-PS1 JRPGs, VII or VIII on 3DS/PS2. These are huge games with tons of sidequests. Probably looking at 45-70 hours depending on how into it you get.

Your tolerance for older games or "outdated" mechanics will affect your enjoyment. Part of the charm of DQ games is they're as simple as JRPGs get mechanics-wise, so they age pretty well, but there are things like the menu system of the NES games and how they can sometimes require grinding that turn off some people.

Is anyone kinda disappointed in the PS4 version of DQXI?

Not that it looks BAD. It's just with DQ games being fairly simplistic gameplay-wise I guess I expected the bulk of the work to go into the graphics, animation, physics, etc. yet aside from the textures and models it barely looks better than VIII.

For example there's a part in the NicoNico stream where the guy is walking around a house and steps on a pumpkin, it disassembles into physics-influenced pieces, but after a few seconds it despawns, and nothing else in the house reacts to the player like that. I'm not saying it should be like Skyrim with shit flying all over the place if you bump into it but I expected more detail.

The upside is I don't own a PS4 or Switch anyway so now I feel like I'm not missing anything by getting the 3DS version.

Really liking the DQVIII easy-going humor. Love this game's atmosphere. Just ran across a random witch fight towards the beginning:

The mobile DQ3 lacks the monster animation in battle that the SNES and GBC versions have, for people who care about that. Battles may be faster in the mobile version because of it, though, so not necessarily all bad. (Anyone compared the battle speed?)

I just finished DQ I
It was pretty good, doesn't really hold up that well, but it was fun. It was pretty surprising to have the protagonist speak in the end I haven't seen that before in anything with silent protagonists

Everyone says 2 is bad and I feel like I won't get much more out of it than 1 so I might just skip it for now.

I wouldn't call II "bad," but it's probably the weakest in the series. I think it starts off great and slowly descends into some straight up bullshit moments of frustration.

IIRC the remakes tone down the bullshit, along with prettying it up and improving controls. That said, the jump in quality from II to III is considerable, and I don't think it's an issue if you skip II.

II isn't bad. The NES version is more bullshit with the green Prince being totally worthless.

Only the final area makes you realize that you have to use debuffs and everything instakills you with crits and meme magic.

So I've been wanting to play either dq3 for the first time, or replay 5. I am a bit tempted to get the android port, as I don't feel like playing it on my old ds, or my computer. Are these ports for the Android decent?

+ It's faster
+ good music
+ it's "harder" for not having the minigames giving you unlimited good endgame gear
+ Translation is now on par with the DQ lore

- Removed minigames, you now have limited gear choices
- No GBC content (Except they added the Thief in the Android version or was that class in the SFC version as well?)
- No battle animations
- They removed the intro with Ortega
- Translation is questionable with the bullshit hard to read accents
