This was a really good game.

I heard the quasi-sequel/directors cut legacy of darkness was better

Haven't played either yet though

Ok, you can start

I don't even like the N64 but the Castlevania games on the system are good and underrated.

I remember that the platforming in the game really begins to shine once you get past the Castle Center. Reinhardt especially had the titanic challenge of having to beat Duel Towers, which contains zero save points and a couple "leaps of faith".
A lot of people complain about them actually but beating those levels felt like such a great accomplishment. Plus Carrie's Tower of Science and Tower of Sorcery were two incredibly great looking levels.

There are only two uncontroversial good N64 games:
Mischief Makers
F-Zero X

And F-Zero X is obsoleted by F-Zero GX, so outside /vr/ there is only one.
>>
>>2904573
Sin & Punishment and Wave Race are great too.

But yes, Sega did btfo Nintendo a little bit with GX.

Ocarina of Time
Star Fox

>>2904573

what do you mean with "uncontroversial"?

Anyway there's also Goemon's Great Adventure, Bangai-O and many others. You guys really don't know that much about the N64's catalogue if you can't even come up with Goemon games.

With most systems I often can't pick an absolute favorite game, and best I could do is to give you a top 5 list that's in no particular order. With the N64, however, it's not contest.

great 3d platformer if left to its own merits. It just doesn't live up to the Castleavnia name.

also, best racing game (that isn't FZero X) coming through

I firmly believe that F-Zero X is just goddamn perfect the way it is. GX disappointed me, it just didn't have that level of control I got from X. Plus, I FUCKING LOVE DEATH RACE. I know, boring circular track but I had many a great time beating my scores and those of my siblings (I topped their scores and times to shame). Just fucking up everybody else and figuring out better strategies for bumping fuckers off to hell in more quick and stylish or pragmatic ways was so satisfying.
>>
>>2906064
F-Zero X got the violent comic book feel down. It really seemed to reward hitting other racers out of the game. GX got the futuristic racer vibe perfectly, and was more about precision driving. I love X, but GX was by far more satisfying to play in my opinion.
>>
>>2901939
It was, but only in the sense that it gave you the option of more characters to play as which gave a slightly different spin on the plot. Also, you had to unlock each character, which added replay value. Either way, heavily underrated game.

Try again in another 10 years, maybe with quantum computing we will finally be able to emulate it properly.
>>
>>2902458

I think OP might be trolling. But who knows.

Castlevania 64 is okay but yeah it's well inferior to Mario 64, F-Zero X, etc. And to other old Castlevania games.
>>
>>2906064

Yeah death race was great. They should have kept that in GX as more than just a story mode mission.

GX is still great though. I like it better than X myself. But they are both awesome.
>>
>>2911343

not that person but: it was just kinda bland and sleepy, I found

I liked the visual style on the flying occult teleporto fish or whatever it was, but otherwise I remember almost nothing about the game

which also means it must not have really challenged me, on top of feeling kinda samey throughout
>>
>>2911969

You don't remember the garden maze with the chainsaw frankie and the 2 dogs? That was one of the most memorable parts in the game for me.
Also the bloody crying statue in level 5, I think. More games need bloody crying statues.

Used to rent pic related all the time as a kid, bought recently and have been slowly working through it. My accuracy is way lower than I remember, and my brain remembers detail on targets that isn't really there, but in spite of that I'm loving playing this shit again.

Love it too. Playing this in 1996 was incredible, and I replayed it again recently and enjoyed it even more due to being more patient than when I was a kid.

I used to play Perfect Dark everyday like a madman even without expansion pak.

Jet Force Gemini is also a great game but the game felt kinda "void" for me after completion.

I did too (with expansion pak though).

And guess what? I still play it all the time. I have the XBLA version and I've invested over 1000 hours into it. I must have put like 5000 hours into that game if you add up all the years I played the N64 version. It's the game of choice between my friends and I; plus all the challenges, co-op, counter-op, single player campaign, etc.

Cosmo is interested in speedruning Castlevania 64 after his hands get well (he hurt himself played 100,000 matches in Sm4sh).

He says it's the perfect balance between length, bugs, and action.

I think he wants to because it's also the only game to get two completely different avatars in one shared world right.
>>
>>2912548
Other than OoT.

He wants to make the game into OoT 2.0, since he knows that reclaiming the title again would be too much commitment to be satisfying.

Started playing this game again after seeing this thread. I remember buying it before the AVGN retrospective where he passed it off as a piece of shit and never played the sequel. I never got past the introductipn portion when I first got it and never made it to the castle, but I just got to the garden maze and I have to say its a pretty decent game than from what I initially remembered. The gameplay could use some tweaking, but man I'm liking the game so far, except
>got gang raped by the two dogs and Chainsaw Frankenstein
>forgot to save before obtaining information from the vampire lady in the rose garden
It's not too much effort to do all that again, but I'm going to take a break before playing it again. I'm still slightly salty about that garden maze.
Aside from that note, the N64 is one of my favorite consoles and its one I still go back to often. The PlayStation is by far more superior, but I'll admit I'm very nostalgic to the N64 that I hold it very dear to me. I have around 80 games which isn't much, but I'm still collecting for the system, which has become increasingly difficult, but at least I have a majority of the best games on the system.
Here's a shot of some personal favorites I go back to very often. Many people enjoy Mystical Ninja, but I prefer Goemoms Great Adventure more as its much more difficult and I like 2D platformers more.
