Who would have known that a common Lion King cartridge would end up being one of the most useful ways of determining what chips your SNES has without having to open it...
>In Options, press B, A, R, R, Y (for programmer Barry Green) to to access the debug menu. This menu deserves special mention for being one of the very few that will easily tell you the CPU, PPU1 and PPU2 versions of your SNES console, which is useful info for testing hardware and software compatibility.
And just in case... When typing the R in "B-A-R-R-Y" use the R shoulder button and not RIGHT on the D-pad.
What's the importance of knowing this information?

Bullshit. The person who wrote that clearly doesn't know shit about the SNES.
The differences between revisions hardly affect games at all. There is a DMA crashing bug on some of the earliest Japanese systems, that's it.
The 1chip and SNES mini systems apparently don't put as much emphasis on mid scanline changes, but even those things and any other difference you could name will have fuck all to do with compatibility.
Awesome, I actually still own my old cart of TLK, I'll try this tonight when I get home.
My SNES is one of the earliest models so I don't think I'll find any surprise, but I want to see the debug menu anyway.

I was told by a babysitter I had that you could get into the debug menu. I have no idea how he figured that out or heard about it but it was the only way I could get to the actually good part of the game with Adult Simba

OP here. And you're right. I copy-pasted that from this site here: https://tcrf.net/The_Lion_King_%28SNES%29

The main reason why people want to know what version SNES they have is because some people swear by the 1chip version. Further details can be found here:

The SUPER UFO PRO 8 cartridge also displays which chips you have (accessible from the menu screen). I thought that was the only cart that had that option.

They don't have a major effect, but they do have an effect. 1CHIP have glitches on the top of the screen in Mystic Quest and Aladdin for example. 1CHIP has a less filtered / sharper image than older machines, etc.
This is awesome. On break at work, but I'm gonna test this when home.
So what do the numbers exactly mean? Some one should test them on different systems.
Cool, both my super retro trio andPALsnes are:
>CPU: 2
>PPU1: 1
>PPU2: 3

My NTSC SNES has the same numbers. It's the model right before they went 1chip, the RGB2 motherboards. I'm guessing 1chip's have a CPU of 3?
Apparently FINAL FANTASY MYSTIC QUEST can do this as well...
>In the menu screen, press START and SELECT at the same time. You should then get a box telling you which version number all the chips in your SNES are. Afterwards, the text in the menu screens might act a bit wacky. Just exit the menu and enter it again to fix it.
